      I must admit, complacency has taken a hold of me in recent years, but current events and our current state as a nation has me jumping back in with both feet. Physical fitness, marksmanship, tactics, training and situational awareness are back on the front burner. I've never given it up, but it wasn't on the top of my list until recently. Excuses aside, I am elated that I've found you and your training series, your website and your resources. Thank you! I've already absorbed a lot and it's helping me and my oldest son immensely! Charlie Mike and Bravo Zulu!

    I’m right handed and I keep my wallet and money in my left front pocket. My Father taught me this. If being robbed you reach your left hand into your pocket and 99.9 percent of the time the robber will look down at your pocket. Now’s your strong hand is ready to defend while they are distracted looking at your left pocket. I’m 62 this month with a broken back, and trust me this worked!

      To be specific... Miyamoto Musashi said that from his book the Book Of Five Rings... Not Art Of War... The reason for the sun or any light source to be somewhere behind you is to create a blind spot for anyone or an enemy... This was used by Musashi in his last duel to distract the enemy with sunlight... To add into situational awareness... Musashi also mentions the "Two-fold gaze" whicj means your eyes should not fix on a target but see overall with your eyes... Which Sajnog describes it in detail (similar idea)

    One of the things I try to do is to go to places when they're not that busy. For instance, I may go to a restaurant at 3:00pm instead of 5:00pm , if I have to go to a store like WalMart ( which I try to avoid ) I'll go as soon as they open in the morning when it's less busy. Most of the time I prefer to shop at little mom & pop stores, rather than big box stores that are crowded. And I avoid big crowds like sports games, or concerts etc.

    My problem is that I am situationally aware, and people think I'm paranoid. I do the whole noting who is around me, what they are doing, how long they are there, where the exits of a building are, pepper spray in-hand, dog, and gun with me when possible, avoid ambush cover, etc.. I'm 4'9",

    That was a great video. I used to take the train to a very bad part of the city I worked in and then walk just shy of 2 miles each way. High crime in the area around train station and the workplace, lots of drugs, etc. Did it for 5+ years, sometimes not leaving until 7 or 8 in the evening. And when I would talk to people about it when asked they thought I was a little weird with the daily mental exercises I would go through from the minute I got on the train until I got to work and vice versa. In that time I never carried a weapon of any sort, and can say I had interesting encounters with either individuals or groups usually in the evening hours, but because I had the awareness of the surroundings and knew how long it took to cover certain distances I felt safe as long as I stayed focused. One of the biggest lessons learned was, especially with a group moving towards my "bubble", was constant eye contact - letting them know that you are aware that they are there and I guess having a silent conversation with just the eyes. It was also a great opportunity, to do both, the people watching and the auditory visualization while on the train. Thank you for reinforcing that the things I was doing were the correct. I feel because I made myself go through those daily exercises it kept me confident and safe.

    • @comanchedase
      @comanchedase 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would not entirely agree with eye contact, it may incite confrontation. You got to look up and close to where they are and that will show that you are looking at them via periferals and they'll notice since they are doing the same and know you're not a duck. Keep a hand half way in the pocket and they'll think you got a piece, plus, get a piece or a knife. There's no point not having one. I can't carry a firearm where I'm from (brazil) but carry a knife at all times, even at the beach(hiding it deep down. And I pulled my shank on two guys once, which was pretty effective (just flicked it open with my hands behind my back and they changed their course right away.

      Stress hormones in animals tend to lead to a wide range of biochemical changes that can be detected by scent in a number of types of secretions, which are especially excreted during moments of stress. There's a very particular scent associated with fear response and with anger response. They both are pretty strong.

    If upon entering a restaurant, per the fire code, you will see a posted occupancy load; if it’s more than 49, there must be two clearly marked exits that lead to a public way. Know this: most people will exit through the same door that they used for entry. I always look for the second exit (if required). Assembly areas, depending on occupancy load, may have three exits or more. Look for clear passageways to those exits, and follow all the way to a public way (sidewalk or street).

    Excellent content and presentation, Chris, so it is easy to absorb the material, thanks! Being highly active in a variety of pursuits in addition to self defense, I was surprised that for me bird watching (in a variety of habitats and hazards) ranked no. 1 for using the skill set you recommended for situational awareness (1. bird watching, 2. ballroom dancing, 3. bow hunting whitetails, 4. trail running, 5. technical rock climbing, ...). Ballroom dancing almost ties for no. 1. Skilled dancers can waltz for hours around a crowded dance floor never bumping into or cutting off another couple.

Maybe it will actually start me noticing details about people after a while, usually the people are just a big mess I cant get any meaning out of. Nice job Chris but I have a couple of additional suggestions. First, spend plenty of time in the place(s) where you want to increase your situational awareness. Visit them at all times of day, all seasons and in all weather. Note the sights, sounds, smells etc. Note the behaviors of people. That way you will know what is normal activity. If you know what is normal, it will be easy to spot what is abnormal. I walk my farm a couple of times a day for this reason, and to take a break from my computer and get some exercise. Second, do all the things that you say but be the gray man while doing it. If there are bad guys present and you are acting situationally aware while everybody else isn’t, they will see that difference in behavior immediately at you will become the first casualty. Third, be unpredictable. Bad guys know how to be situationally aware too. They also know that the good guys are out there looking for them. They know that if they were a good guy, they would sit or stand in certain spots as they are the best spots to observe and defend. I call them roosts. That’s where they will look first, the roosts. Good spots are spots that you can make work for you that the bad guys will overlook. That will give you the edge. All the best!

    • @resilientfarmsanddesignstu1702
      @resilientfarmsanddesignstu1702 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      One more thing that I find useful to practice. Shifting between wide angle vision and focused vision. Most people spend nearly 100% of their time in focused vision. Why? Because everything most people do requires it, driving does, working on a computer does, etc. The situationally aware person should spend about 80% of the time in wide angle vision and only 20% of the time in focused vision. I know that you know what wide angle vision is but some of your viewers might not. Wide angle vision means looking straight ahead with your eyes while also viewing what is in your peripheral vision. Only when you detect something that catches your attention do you switch to focused vision. When you can walk around using your wide angle vision and that practice becomes so normal to you that you don’t even think about doing it anymore, at that point you are becoming situationally aware.

    I make sure when I go out anywhere in public I’m dressed properly, by that I mean proper footwear, almost always boots, jeans and shirt that matches the weather.I always carry one of my knives. These guys I see at the grocery store or restaurant wearing big droopy cargo shorts and flip-flops just make me cringe.

    Thank you, just wanted to say that in California especially cities and freeways, the reason turn signals are not used is because, if used, it warns the driver behind and to the left or right to speed up so you can't get into the space you need. I found in LA traffic that if I even looked to my side view mirror somehow the other driver instinctively knew I was gonna change lanes. IT IS HILARIOUS to watch. Here are people that are almost always totally unaware of their surroundings yet in this instance somehow they are clairvoyant. HAHAHA Well, thanks for the great video!!!

    The SEAL loop is exactly the same process as the OODA Loop. Why do people need to feel they need to arbitrarily change things to something of their own?

    Could you make a video on how to find good deals from panic buyers who bought cool guns during the Covid scare, but now perhaps changed their minds and are looking to sell?

    Orient, not Orientate. Exits, not Exists. I'm an immigrant and I had to learn to speak English properly which unfortunately for me drives me nuts when I hear people not speak properly to the point where I'm not listening because it makes me doubt what you're saying.

      @@iamanovercomer3253 yes. Good insight! I have chronic medical issues at 39 yrs old that render me unable to work. This is incredibly stressful. Dealing with the Veterans Administration and not getting the proper help for conditions. Therefore I have been doing my own research and it's overwhelming at times.

      Speak for yourself. if you can by on that little sleep, good for you. More power to you. But some people need more than even 8 hours just to get by! So, don't patronize those of us who do!

    Um, sorry but smell is very important when you’re backpacking alone. Bears are very smelly. And smelling someone’s body odor ahead of you, makes you aware that you just may be coming up on someone. As a female backpacker that’s very important to be aware and alert because most backpackers are male. Some are total skeezeballs.

    Did somebody say breathing meditation? The Buddha has entered the chat and that, my friends, is always a good thing.
    May all beings be happy.
    May all beings be free from pain and suffering.
    May all beings live with ease and well-being.
    May all beings be free. ✌🏻
