IRL pilots hardly ever use rudder at high speeds but we are so reliant on it in RB due to instructor. Im Sim mode the P-51 flies really well at high speeds since you hardly ever use rudder.

Rudder is still necessary for controlled turns - unless you are in an exact 90 degree turn you are going to pitch up or down slightly, however yes, at higher speeds generally most of the turning is done by ailerons and elevators, not so much the rudder. Also, American and German aircraft in particular have some fairly... sensitive control surfaces... which in real life, and in most sims, could be used to put the aircrafts into controlled stalls to get behind opponents. Obviously when attempting this, or recovering from an accidental stall, needs use of the rudder as well. I'm honestly a little disappointed that the P-51 in War Thunder doesn't go into a flat spin when you attempt a high-G turn for more than about 5 seconds.
Hello Adam, I was wondering how the P51 D30 holds up nowadays. Ive heard from other people that it isnt as good as it used to be, but i dont know who to trust tbh because i havent seen a relatively recent video on the D30. I have been playing the F4u 4 and I've been liking it so far, but i want something a bit more agile and was wondering if the D30 is the correct choice for what i desire. Ive played the Premium D10 and i like the way it flies, is the D30 the same in strategy or is it a bit different?
Yeah got nerfed 2 years ago, mainly the rudder locks up massively. Yeah I prefer F4U4 over the D30 currently. Better roll and turn, but limited WEP and a bit worse climb at low altitude. Same strategy as D30 though.
@@AdamTheEnginerd it's even worse than that, it's a 9.0 jet. So yeah, it will face the T-2, mig 19 S or PT and cl 13B (wich i think is the hardest to fight against)

I saw from your stats that u flown a lot the p51d5, but u don’t have the same god-like K/D that you have on other planes. What’s your opinion on this plane, and your general opinion of 4.3 p51s? They were the ones who fought ww2 (as the d30 was made in 1946), but they are hopeless against planes that they faced, as the tier 4 109s or Doras. In real life they actually fought pretty well against 109s, even though Germans pilots were poor trained in 1944 and German fighters were killing bombers. The g-14 had (and has in the game) the Climb, Speed and low speed turn advantage.
P51D5 was the first plane I flew a lot, and I was a noob back then. It was at 5.0 like the D30 but I thought they were the same, so I kept flying the D5 at 5.0 lol.
AdamTheEnginerd wow, at 5.0 was really hopeless. Even at 4.3 struggles a lot. I asked because today i had a match US vs Germany (without UK). I was using the d-5 but without spitfires keeping 109s busy at high altitude, we have been slaughtered. In a D5 you literally have no options against a g2 trop or an f4 apart from diving, but you can’t dive forever. Not talking about an uptier against g10s and g14s. It’s just strange the fact that in real life it was a good counter to all those planes

It felt like a brick compared to how i remember and i crashed in the first try. xD Had really problems fighting even P51 and P47 at low altitude, that never was a problem before. The Roll nerf is really extreme. Feels almost like flying a 2 engined ok turning heavy fighter now^^

I thought that i was crazy when i couldn't use the P-51 as good as i use to. I guess the rudder was nerfed like a year or 2 ago but i assumed it was always like that
Adam, try out the i-185 (m-82) sometime! It's a really interesting plane. It has a super high AoA that makes its low speed MER very bad, but its high speed energy retention (in turns and straight lines) is somehow really good despite the AoA. It's got P-47N level roll (just shy of the 190's) and okay-to-bad turn (better than a 190 though, and even decent with flaps). If you have your fw 190 angles mastered, you can just use those same techniques with this plane to get on your opponent's six. The bad low-speed MER also helps with staying on their six. I've managed to tail a Yak-3 in a CB for over a minute and a half before another enemy interrupted. Difficult but doable. I've noticed that this plane loves to spiral dive because its high speed MER is so good. I'm not sure about this but I think it could even come out of a spiral dive with more speed than a P-51D-5 or a P-63. The AoA makes defensive flying much more difficult than a 190A imo though, because you can move your nose a lot without actually changing direction. It's weird (But the same wonky AoA gives you excellent snap-to-target for offensive situations). And also it has bad (but manageable) climb rate stock but good-nice climb rate spaded, which allows it to energy fight with 109's and the like. It's very, very weird when you're at excessive AoA's and you can't turn but you can still hold your own in a stall fight with a 109. Definitely one of the weirdest planes I've ever played, but very fun. P.S. You have to be extra careful when diving on low flyers. You compress very little, especially for a Russian plane, so there's no problem getting your nose up, but due to the AoA you can still crash even when your nose is well above the horizon.
D-30 is a little broken tbh, I have no clue why people keep complaining about it being useless, that shit is OP. Okay, it's not History Channel "Dogfights" level of overpowered, but if you know how to energy fight, or are just good at managing and timing your turns, this thing can be a real beast... M2s with late war belts, speed and armour you expect from an American fighter, and honestly, some pretty stupid energy retention. It's really fun to come in from high altitude on some overconfident Germans and watch their maneuvers become more and more panicked as they realize they grossly underestimated your abilities.
Well imagine all pros of the D30 (+ a bit of extra climb and speed at higher altitudes) and add a good rudder, and that's the D30 that I would agree was undertiered. Now, at medium-high speeds, if the enemy knows that the D30's rudder is like this you won't be able to get them if they slightly dodge correctly.

190Ds and Ta152H are very different. Ta152H will actually outturn Corsairs and Bearcats with flaps, while 190Ds can't do that. In 190Ds you require the energy advantage.
True dat. With the TaH its not that bad, but with the 190s I see no land. 190s just dont climb as well, so I rarely have the energy and it feels like reversing is not the viable option. But maybe its just me.

Why not risk the headon? Japanese planes r frail and in my experience damage i take is minimal if any if i dodge after sending a burst. Its like doin headons in a 262

Like 280 IAS, the MEC in the description is a good starting point for the aircraft in the video. Usually MEC for climbing and going fast is the same, so yes.
I have a love hate relationship with this plane. It's good as long as you are above everyone, I have been near to an ace in multiple times that I had to J out because lack of time. I feel like this thing sits better between 4k and 2k where the roll becomes decent at low speed. But boi the rudder, I once engaged a g2 tropical that removed my rudder in the merge and I actually felt no difference for the 5 minutes of dogfight, realized just after shooting it down

Sometimes I can take an entire match in 25 minutes, some others I get killed in the first 10 minutes and think I can take another match but when it's time to carry it goes longer and I end up having to return to class before the second match ends
It is kind of sad that all of the tech tree P-51s are so horribly priced, they are basically outmatches by other planes very easily, planes that have half the repair cost, are faster, and turn better. Don't come at me saying that "it's a beast when flown by a skilled pilot", because every single fighter in the game is an absolute monster when piloted by someone of this skill level. Every pilot flies to the strengths of their aircraft, and every aircraft that the P-51s face have a much better array of abilities that you can use. They are overall cheaper while being more effective. Yea it looks sexy, so does the Spitfire, and the Bf109, and the Zeros, and the Yaks, and the G55s...
@@AdamTheEnginerd i have to say I also agree with that point of view... US planes do depend a lot more on teammates. US pilots need teammates to deck in order for enemies to chase them and you can end up higher than your enemies. And average US players love to deck so much!

Well it's not even strong enough to counter the yaw effect of roll at high speed like we saw in this match. It's easy to dodge an enemy that has a poor rudder like this.
Adam you make this look so easy , there is alot of us p51 noobs that just can't get this planer to be a killer . Could you please dictate som rules that 51 must never break or something to the like ? I believe this is one the most frustrating planes in war thunder for many of us .
Starting off with rules can be useful, but it's better to be fluid and adapt to make the best decision in every different situation. General rule to start off is to attack if you have the energy advantage, and run if you don't.
When i set prop pith to 100 on my 109 i either get a dead engine or a n ircraft that slows down even when just going straight. I’m sure I’m using it either wrong or on a wrong aircraft, any tips?
Haha for sure, on German aircraft you need to leave prop pitch automatic. There is a way to use the German prop pitch as an airbrake, but you need to be careful.

Its fun outturning 109s in rolling scissors in a plane much faster than them. If they start doing barrel rolls when you dive on them you cant follow cause of that rudder tho. So i just keep going the same way and shoot in his general vicinity. He gets scared and tries to evade. Then you just lead and shoot. The P51D30 is the only plane i feel comfortable flying and can usually get 2-3 kills per match on a regular basis, in others i get usually 2 kills but thats quite rare

Anyone else think war thunder really over exaggerates allied aircraft flaws? According to the data on Greg’s airplanes, and having 17 hours in a trainer p-51d30T, the rudder and roll rate is not nearly bad at all. War thunder also buffs the shit out of Japanese aircrafts high altitude performance. Only the Ki-84 and the NJK2 should have decent high altitude performance in reality. They really had horrible quality with dual stage superchargers which is why Japanese fighters never operated at high altitude 99% of the time. Also no variant of the zero should be a threat past 28,000 feet.
Maneuvering Energy Retention. Essentially it's a measure of how much energy (speed) an aircraft loses when maneuvering. @@AdamTheEnginerd The super strict BnZ kinda dealio that doesn't have too much leeway in my experience. When it goes right, it goes REALLY right, but that doesn't seem to happen very often =[. I like the 190s more (Doras in particular). Similar concept, but it feels like they have more options and feel easier to pull off defensive maneuvers in.

A bit more than a year ago. I flew it twice shortly after it was nerfed and shelved it. I got good results, but it wasn't fun.

D-30 is a little broken tbh, I have no clue why people keep complaining about it being useless, that shit is OP.
Okay, it's not History Channel "Dogfights" level of overpowered, but if you know how to energy fight, or are just good at managing and timing your turns, this thing can be a real beast... M2s with late war belts, speed and armour you expect from an American fighter, and honestly, some pretty stupid energy retention.
It's really fun to come in from high altitude on some overconfident Germans and watch their maneuvers become more and more panicked as they realize they grossly underestimated your abilities.
Well imagine all pros of the D30 (+ a bit of extra climb and speed at higher altitudes) and add a good rudder, and that's the D30 that I would agree was undertiered. Now, at medium-high speeds, if the enemy knows that the D30's rudder is like this you won't be able to get them if they slightly dodge correctly.

Any chance on a video with 190Ds/TA152H1 on how to fight the Corsairs and particularly the Bearcats? Having quite a lot of problems with those. Especially the latter ones.
190Ds and Ta152H are very different. Ta152H will actually outturn Corsairs and Bearcats with flaps, while 190Ds can't do that. In 190Ds you require the energy advantage.
True dat. With the TaH its not that bad, but with the 190s I see no land. 190s just dont climb as well, so I rarely have the energy and it feels like reversing is not the viable option. But maybe its just me.

Why is the guy whining in the chat that he is bad? Its sad that he maybe didnt learn anything from your videos. But dont worry thanks to you and greenfury and jengar i learned a lot. I became from a bad player to a better player. I win more 1vs1, ok the aim is below average but i pratice on it, the rest is all thx to you. I fly without squad so i sometimes have a hard time especially allied teams, even when i kill 2 we lose anyway.

Like 280 IAS, the MEC in the description is a good starting point for the aircraft in the video. Usually MEC for climbing and going fast is the same, so yes.
They need to fix the p51D30 tail its way to bad compare to other p51ds because they all same just one different and thats the engine

The speed difference is highest at low altitude.
I have a love hate relationship with this plane. It's good as long as you are above everyone, I have been near to an ace in multiple times that I had to J out because lack of time. I feel like this thing sits better between 4k and 2k where the roll becomes decent at low speed. But boi the rudder, I once engaged a g2 tropical that removed my rudder in the merge and I actually felt no difference for the 5 minutes of dogfight, realized just after shooting it down

Sometimes I can take an entire match in 25 minutes, some others I get killed in the first 10 minutes and think I can take another match but when it's time to carry it goes longer and I end up having to return to class before the second match ends

Roll is significantly worse, it's slightly slower at sea level, and there's more compression at speed.
It is kind of sad that all of the tech tree P-51s are so horribly priced, they are basically outmatches by other planes very easily, planes that have half the repair cost, are faster, and turn better.
Don't come at me saying that "it's a beast when flown by a skilled pilot", because every single fighter in the game is an absolute monster when piloted by someone of this skill level. Every pilot flies to the strengths of their aircraft, and every aircraft that the P-51s face have a much better array of abilities that you can use. They are overall cheaper while being more effective.
Yea it looks sexy, so does the Spitfire, and the Bf109, and the Zeros, and the Yaks, and the G55s...
Hmm I think it's more that they require teammates to truly shine, and US teams struggle with that due to bomber spam.
@@AdamTheEnginerd i have to say I also agree with that point of view... US planes do depend a lot more on teammates. US pilots need teammates to deck in order for enemies to chase them and you can end up higher than your enemies. And average US players love to deck so much!

It's normal, you have to be patient and let the enemy come to you. Don't dive unless you're certain you'll catch the enemy jet.

I just started spading it and dear god, the rudder is horrid. Absolutely dreadful. Especially after coming from the C-10.
Is it really that different from C10?
@@AdamTheEnginerd Yeah, the C-10 doesn't seem to lock up nearly as fast. I can get shots in it a lot better. At least, that's how it was when I last played it; I dunno if they've nerfed it since.

Roll rate isn't bad, it's the rudder that is trash except on the P51H. Indeed P51Ds aren't fun since the nerf imo.
It's so weird that so many people seem to have issues with the P-51's rudder. I mean yeah, it does lock up, but it's rarely an issue, I find.
Well it's not even strong enough to counter the yaw effect of roll at high speed like we saw in this match. It's easy to dodge an enemy that has a poor rudder like this.

Adam you make this look so easy , there is alot of us p51 noobs that just can't get this planer to be a killer . Could you please dictate som rules that 51 must never break or something to the like ? I believe this is one the most frustrating planes in war thunder for many of us .
Starting off with rules can be useful, but it's better to be fluid and adapt to make the best decision in every different situation. General rule to start off is to attack if you have the energy advantage, and run if you don't.

When i set prop pith to 100 on my 109 i either get a dead engine or a n ircraft that slows down even when just going straight. I’m sure I’m using it either wrong or on a wrong aircraft, any tips?
Haha for sure, on German aircraft you need to leave prop pitch automatic. There is a way to use the German prop pitch as an airbrake, but you need to be careful.

Fuel goes by reasonably fast, I wouldn't want to load 20 min on this.
@@AdamTheEnginerd unless its an 109G-6 to G-10, 109K or Griffin, for me 30 mins of fuel feel too much and slows me down a bit when it comes to climbing, i hate that a lot more when flying the D-5 since it has less HP than D-30

Its fun outturning 109s in rolling scissors in a plane much faster than them. If they start doing barrel rolls when you dive on them you cant follow cause of that rudder tho. So i just keep going the same way and shoot in his general vicinity. He gets scared and tries to evade. Then you just lead and shoot. The P51D30 is the only plane i feel comfortable flying and can usually get 2-3 kills per match on a regular basis, in others i get usually 2 kills but thats quite rare
Yeah rudder is trash. D30 overall used to be significantly better a bit over 2 years ago.

You can turn with most Germans especially if you use flaps. Against the other nations, it's a death sentence to turn.

Anyone else think war thunder really over exaggerates allied aircraft flaws? According to the data on Greg’s airplanes, and having 17 hours in a trainer p-51d30T, the rudder and roll rate is not nearly bad at all. War thunder also buffs the shit out of Japanese aircrafts high altitude performance. Only the Ki-84 and the NJK2 should have decent high altitude performance in reality. They really had horrible quality with dual stage superchargers which is why Japanese fighters never operated at high altitude 99% of the time. Also no variant of the zero should be a threat past 28,000 feet.

Maneuvering Energy Retention. Essentially it's a measure of how much energy (speed) an aircraft loses when maneuvering. When it goes right, it goes REALLY right, but that doesn't seem to happen very often =[.
I like the 190s more (Doras in particular). Similar concept, but it feels like they have more options and feel easier to pull off defensive maneuvers in.
It's not super strict except against Japan. Against Germany you outturn most of them.
