When I was about sixteen I was laying on the beach in Virginia looking up at the full moon and trying like hell to see a Sparkle from where the eagle was. Binoculars didn't help much. I've often wondered why they didn't go back but when I look at the distance and after having grown up with electronic things always breaking down I became aware of the true Miracle of the Apollo Astronauts making it to the moon and then more miraculously they made it back home. The odds are just so against missions like this. We need a new flameless propulsion method. I beat around in the corners of my mind for a couple of years trying to come up with a magnetic propulsion system. My dad was an engineer and he kind of put the Chill on it. I told him about my proposal and he said it was already invented. I think I'll stay on Earth I would rather move into a cave, rather than go on this trip.

In the US, women pilots were able to pass the same rigorous training that the men went through, but an early decision that astronauts had to be military pilots eliminated women from consideration. The first American astronauts were all tremendous individuals, but it is a shame that it took years to be more inclusive.

It was tragic how the Avro fighter was canceled--and this has led to various theories (including that there was pressure put on Canada by the US gov't--as it was a blow to American pride that the top fighter in the world was not made by a US company). But the silver lining to this was how many of Avro's scientists & engineers were signed on by NASA to assist with the Apollo landing. If I were an aerospace engineer, and if I had to choose between building a plane that's gonna drop bombs on people or going to the moon, I'll take the moon every time. George, Sudbury, Canada.

My father worked at an aerospace company in the 1960’s on the project Mercury capsules. He worked at McDonnell Douglas at the St. Louis airport. He was involved in creating issues with radio systems for the original seven to solve in the trainer capsule.
He was very humble and private about his work and only talked about it right before he passed away in 2021. Two days prior to his passing I asked him what his best moment was. I expected him to say something about the NASA contract but he responded that a few years later he spent an entire day in the front seat of a F-4 phantom working on wiring issues. His life long dream had been to fly. He had applied to be in the first class at the new Air Force Academy. He was qualified except that his eyesight was only 20/25 without glasses and at least in those first classes that wasn’t good enough. So instead he helped make sure our astronauts came home safe.
Throughout my childhood he would wake me up to watch any launch that was televised. Godspeed dad you can always fly now. Proud of you!

These 5 people are representing what I love about America (yes, I know one is Canadian, but he's working for an American enterprise here 🙃). There is an awful lot of bad things, of which my friends remind me, while asking why I follow the news from the US and like to visit it.... NASA, intelligent interviewers, diverse people, [etc etc] and especially Colbert with diverse geeks like NASA people... They are inspiring and helping to deal with less inspiring people on a daily basis...

Did you know that commissioned officers in the US, until a year ago, were required to provide 8x10 photos in their personnel jackets? Additionally, US service academy candidates are required to provide 8x10 photos with their applications for admission.

@@markbeames7852 I didn’t know that. Lol, fortunately good looks are not prerequisite, since I know quite a few ugly officers!

@@stephaniefain1863 good looks (admittedly subjective) are for the Service Academy admission. Although that said, they can't hurt when a promotion board is convened and one's personnel jacket is passed around. 😉

@@markbeames7852 lol, we may have a different idea about my “ good looking” comment, but I admit both are true, they are certainly cute. What I meant was, great looking uniforms, strait backs, confidence, easy smiles, a general pleasing neatness, and obvious enthusiasm.
