    My lil sis constantly wants interaction. She doesn’t potty or bathe by herself. She often runs out naked waiting to be wiped, or from the bathroom ready to bathe or get dressed. She doesn’t dress on her own. However, I think she is very capable because she has independently put on articles of clothes, used the potty, washed hands, and brushed teeth. I think the reason she isn’t independent is because she wants the constant company; she gets really jealous when no one is interacting with her even for a minute. And often her running out is because she wasn’t answered for a moment or left briefly unattended. She is in third grade. Today, I actually tested her (I never help will hygiene really, but it was just me and her) she pulled her pants down and ran to the bathroom. So instead of standing at the open door supervising and instructing as I would (which usually leads to her running out) I closed the door and talked through the door, but I don’t think she could really hear me. She tried to open it, but I said “no you have to wipe and pull up your pants”. So after a moment I heard commotion suggesting she did what I said. She didn’t flush (she can forget sometimes). And her washing her hands. I asked her if she was done and she said “I done”. What does this say about her ability? Do you think this was lucky, or that she has the capacity, she is just so caught up in routine and comfort? What do you suggest my next steps are?

    Great book. I got around to reading it today, after we became 75% dry (for about a week now, I feared some kind of freak luck) in a matter of two days, without me knowing exactly what I did that worked (it was like the 5th or 6th time we stared), only reinforcer is praise and that she is allowed to flush to her heart's desire, she only gets a limited amount of sweets because she is too agitated then. I say 75% because she knows when is time to pee, never gave her more liquids as I was always encouraging liquids anyway and I was trying to find her true schedule, she takes off her undie totally still but still does not pull it back, nor wipe. BM is an issue as she finds the posture new and is afraid from it, so hides and goes in her underwear. I am reluctant to stop her as she is easily constipated. Biggest issue is that she flat out refuses diapers any time other than night, she only goes in her potty.. And I am unable to schedule everything outside of the house around the potty time. She will be 4 in September and for the first time I am not that stressed and sure that we are on the right track as far as the potty goes . And thank Godness for summer as there is less clothing. I hope we learn more soon enough as kindergarten stars in September. I just wanted to say great book and encourage parents of non verbal autistic kids, it just happenes when they are ready and then we can build on that. It doesn't hurt trying and not stressing but most importantly trusting the kids.

    I have a 4 year old son and have been trying to potty train for two years now. He goes to kindergarten for neurotypical children but they have thankfully accommodated his special needs. Its been two weeks now that he has managed to come home without any accidents and the teacher assistant has said he goes by himself or gets her to take him to the toilet, however, he's not doing that at home. I suppose its easier for him to remain dry at school as they dont drink as much fluids. We still need to to take him to the toilet at home as he is still not self initiating. What can i do?

    • @mrsanonymous414
      @mrsanonymous414 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Take him, and stand outside the bathroom door with it open at first. Then, when you feel that has improved, start standing behind the closed door.

    • @marybarbera
      @marybarbera  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Make sure when you take him at home that you say potty or toilet and provide a lot of reinforcement when he goes.

      @@marybarbera thank you so much for your response Mary. So when its potty time we say 'wee-wee' and he knows what it means. Right now he gets a sweet for going to the toilet and he knows he should get one cause he looks at my hand to see if I have a sweet. After he undresses he opens his hand for his sweet. If he doesn't do anything he only gets for going, otherwise he will get another should he urinate or BM. I'm happy to say that since I posted my comment, he went to the toilet on his own to do BM in the toilet! Although he didnt say he was going as he has limited speech I suppose this is a good start..

    I followed the “oh crap” potty training and so far so good. Minus the few accidents we have while out by not being able to reach the potty he is doing great. He has limited speech but his potty sign is easy to understand. My only issue is with his OT and speech therapist they say the office requires a child to be in a pull-up if they can’t verbally say or sign the potty sign. Any way I can get around this? I really feel like it’s holding him back, since he knows he’s wearing a pull-up so he doesn’t have to use his sign he made up for the potty.

      If he is staying dry at home with the underwear i'd just ask that they give it a trial run. Maybe underwear under a diaper so he can still feel the underwear?

    Thank you for the video and the eBook which is packed with lots of good info! I'm a grandfather to 9 years old boy with server autism and non-verbal. BCBA of the boy at the school is saying he is not ready for potty training. She is saying he does not recognize when he needs to go yet. Some of the book I read even suggested ignore such comments as 'not ready' and just go for it. Is there a such thing as 'not ready'? Thank you!

    My son is turning 5 in few months and is partially potty trained. He uses bathroom at home but he refuses to go into public restroom and at school as well. He is in preschool only 2hrs a day but he will be in kindergarten soon for 6 hrs and he won’t be able to hold it that long.
    We’re working on this with his therapist but not much success so far. Any suggestions on how to overcome that type of fear or discomfort of using restroom out of home ?

    • @marybarbera
      @marybarbera  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're not alone! Lots of kiddos struggle with using public restrooms at first, but you can practice at places like the grocery store, Target, Walmart, etc. Try your best to make it fun and always have big rewards for even entering the public bathroom happily. You can have them see that you use the bathroom in public, too, and it's no big deal, etc. I have resources on desensitization, too! You might find this helpful as the material can be applied to your situation: marybarbera.com/systematic-desensitization-rebroadcast-doctors-dentist-haircuts/
      Perhaps, during an after school event, you could practice in the bathroom at school, too.

    What age is right to start potty training?

    • @marybarbera
      @marybarbera  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is a complicated question as age and developmental age are very different and it can depend on other skills and priorities. Most children can be potty trained by age 5 , including those with developmental disabilities. Check out the ebook here www.marybarbera.com/potty for more on the topic.
