I think he used to be a really great doctor but grew old and overworked. It's sad that it ended this way for him, an early retirement would've been nicer.
He started caring about his wallet, then his patients.

@@MsMaryPatricia one of the worst things about being overwhelmed at work, is that rarely you realize you are overwhelmed. When you do something every day and begin being overwhelmed, the quality of your work slowly and silently starts deteriorating, and if nobody calls you out, it will just get worse and worse as you are so tired that you are not able to identify it until a major screw up or until someone points it out to you.
Even being considerably young, this has happened to me at work when I'm tired, and then I'm asked why did I do that, and when I see myself, I ask myself too "why did I do that?". When that has happened to me, I ask to take some days off, because just then I realize I'm tired.
And, for doctors it's just worse, since they know better and they over-estimate their capabilities sometimes. Even in this show someone said it "The worst kind of patient is a doctor, because they think they know better than you"
I think one thing that many people are complaining about lately in the American healthcare system is the sheer amount of paperwork doctors have to fill out. It may not seem like much but imagine: you’re tired already since the whole day you’ve had surgeries, rounding on your patients in the hospital, then going to clinic then at the end of the day you can’t just rest. You need to fill out so much paperwork. It burns you out even faster and stresses you. Many doctors can get fulfillment from helping their patients. But no one has ever said he likes paperwork. The bureaucracy is swollen and staffed by people who aren’t doctors.

I don''t think he was lazy, I think he was just overworked and maybe getting a little too old. However, the CPR thing was completely wrong but these shows rarely get it right.
they cannot do cpr correctly on tv shows because you can only fake cpr while your arms are slightly bent doing the real cpr position would actually hurt the actor receiving it and cause potentially serious issues
I think it's that he had been there so long and was so stressed our that he had become cynical as a coping mechanism. And when you become cynical you just come in with a lot of bias that you tend to overlook details.

CPR is done only in a case where person isnt responsive, and not breathing (if you are a medic you are allowed to check pulse too)

CPR on tv shows often show CPR done incorrectly or with bent arms because they need to give the impression they are doing CPR without actually doing it, because doing CPR on a healthy actor can cause many issues. Basically u shouldn't learn proper CPR technic from TV -- I wish more people would learn CPR, and the signs of a heart attack or stroke it would save so many lives.
Jessika with a K I Learned it in high school. Gym class has the Heimlich and CPR as a requirement in the class. I have never had to use either but I am glad I know them now.

It wasnt just missing something. he continuously misdiagnosed patients through the space of 2 years. he was sloppy with CPR which possibly resulted in this patients death. all doctors make mistakes, but at least 4 serious mistakes in 4 years is too serious - theyre license and ID needs to be removed

he had a good heart, good with medicine, but he was in fact a lazy doctor. Doctors get burnouts which we have to push through, I'm studying phycology and the one thing I've learnt is to be a person who practices medicine, is to be the hero, you either win or you loose. There will be many reasons why a doctor would become lazy overtime, over 400 doctors kill themselves a year from depression, but its usually a complex amount of reasons towards it. We either push through it and keep charging into patient rooms and save them, or we grow lazy from our emotions and make simple mistakes like this unfortunate guy did.

I fell so bad for that doctor he tried his best doing what he could and no one believes how hard he tried.I know how he may have made the patient worse but he deals with a lot so it wasn’t entirely his fault

Actually it is almost entirely his fault lol. The man failed to follow proper procedure (the rules) multiple times. In this case it even lead to the patients death.

I'm pretty sure most doctors wouldn't have caught necrotizing fasciitis given the way this doctor described the patients presentation. Dude came in with a pimple, not other symptoms or risk factors and then comes back with NF? Like come on.
Edit: On top of that, the guy says he sees 50 patients a day, that means he saw 3000 patients in 3 months, and he only has 4 misdiagnosis that they know of. That's a 0.001% chance of misdiagnosis, even if you increased it 10 fold, it'd still only be 0.01%.
Yeah that's a whole load of bullshit.
50 patients a DAY!? With at least a proper 15 minutes of clinical studies, paperwork, physicals per patient that's 12 hours and a half of just clinic duty, let alone other responsibilities! The director of that hospital needs to be reviewed for placing that much work on one single doctor.

@@MrShroomed Also he chose/requested it in order to "stay afloat" which I presume means financially and while it is heartbreaking he easily could have discussed with the hospital his struggles and tried to find other solutions instead of putting patients at risk because he couldn't put his all into their care because he stretched himself too thin
I think the blame is more on the how he was overworked rather than simply being lazy

They never show his hands on the patient. They could have used a training dummy instead. Also the doctor is portrayed by an actor, who has a lot less medical experience than an actual doctor

But also his patients. In this job it is vital to recognize when u can't keep up and need to stop. In scrubs they had a somewhat similar situation where Kelso stopped a former coworker who didn't keep up to date on procedures and medicine advancements.
@Speaking Truth especially when you know the doctor us overworked. He needed more staff to cover paperwork alone. It sounds like he needed more doctors to work with him not just him diagnosis all those patients alone or atleast without a second opinion

Everyone expects dr. To save people.. but people pay little to no attention in what theyre going through. Theyre human too.

They're more like risk takers and gamblers than saviors.
Because whatever they do does not guarantee your safety 100%. There's always a risk. They simply reduce the probability of death.

He is lazy. He got lazy doing routine procedure for 2 yrs which resulted to multiple misdiagnosis.
@@contessa8817 if you look at how many misdiagnosis incidents he may of had in a single month assuming he maintained a stable workload of 50 patients per day. 50x30 = 1500 patients, if he had 4 misdiagnosis 4/1500 is 0.0026X100 is a 2.6% chance of misdiagnosis which is VERY VERY low for the workload.

I feel for the guy but he should not have been working in such conditions . Don't agree with tossing him out like a spare part but he definitely should have been pulled off duty before it had reached this step. He was tired , over worked/overwhelmed and burning out . He started forgetting things and cutting corners because if it all , and thats a recipe for death. Perhaps some rest , support and more training would have equip him with enough skill + motivation to get back in the game in top shape.

It's the fact that he cut corner so many times that it costed the lives of several patients. If you were a family member of a person who died at his hand I'm sure you would agree with his faith. If it would've been the death of one patient he should've been aware of his mistake and ask for help.
you use/repurpose your older more experienced employees as teachers, guides, facilitators, mentors, coaching and educating the newer members of the organisation. we need to stop assuming people are meant to run around like spring chickens forever and ever.
Sometimes even undiagnosed illness in doctors can lower cognitive power and reason. For instance. I used to do much better in school. I had proper energy levels. Then my medical condition that had been undiagnosed for years got worse. I began to become anemic very quickly. I couldn't cope with the previous methods I used before. I now understand why I used to binge on certain foods. hehe. Anyways It lowered my grades and made it difficult to do anything. Even though I have the general aptitude to do well in school and study. When you lose the energy, thinking power, and will to work. Everything crumbles.

This is a doctor that has lost his passion. A good enough man but you have to have the passion for the role to keep doing it. I work at a hospital currently and I know a gastro doctor like this. A lovely man but hates his job and keeps doing it because he retires in a couple years but in those years I do worry what could happen to his patients.
I can understand tiredness but laziness is unexceptable. Your patients' lives depend on you and sloppyness is a recipe for disaster!
“Human errors” on doctors happen at pretty high rate; They are not God, not robot either in this IT societies.
Systems to prevent such are important, not blaming doctors personally.

well you do defibrilate when someone has no pulse. He was in V-fib (Ventricularfibrilation) so it is shockable, unshockable Rhythms are Asystole (no Electric reaction from Heart tissue) or pulseless Electric activity.
@@DylanGuitar525 nope, you never shock on no rhythm. V-fib is a type of rhythm, because the heart is quivering or attempting to pump. You can see on the monitor that it's a flatline

I have suffered from several medical mistakes. One surgeon cut open my thigh as she didn't realise that the laser was 'on'! I had a bad epidural that caused days of repair and pain and resulted in my scars rupturing and causing terrible problems. When I went back into the same hospital a year later they wanted to give me the same anaethesiologist, I said no way and they said I had to as he was the chief anaethesiologist, I insisted, they got scared and gave me another. A few months later I was back in and this time they prepped me, left me parked in a corridor outside the bloc with just a sheet over me, freezing for almost two hours. They then put me under, put in one suture and back to my room. They explained that they had an emergency before me and still wanted to get me into the bloc which of course allowed them to bill that procedure full whack and pay everyone.

Got a bit overworked, got tired, and just started getting slow and making mistakes.
Probably a kinder move would have been to push him into an early retirement. It's common in corporate world that you retire seasoned employees instead of laying them off or firing them, since it gives them a better severance, but I don't know what the norm is in medicine.

I remember there was an episode in second season of "Scrubs" with such plot. Medicine is constant work, and even though older doctors are very experienced they start to make more mistakes

When he was doing cpr, and correct me if I'm wrong, but he wasn't doing it correctly. If you look carefully has hinds were on top of each other which causes flimsy pumping, your hands are supposed to be connected to get more pressure through the ribs, even if he was pumping the heart, it wouldn't ever be enough to bring someone back to life. To add to this, doctors have burnouts and can get grumpy, but he wasn't happy with his job, he was a man who was getting lazy of doing his job right. Despite your job, and despite how you personally feel, you work as hard as you possibly can. It sounds ignorant but as a doctor your the person who depends how the patient will spend the rest or their life if they get one. I'm currently studying to become a phycologist, its mandatory that we learn cpr and how to conduct it on a patient.
