    It gives me goose bumps to hear they have honoured Carl Sagan, by naming this a SAGAN class of ship.... fiction or not it is something I'm sure Carl would have approved of.

    Great synopsis, but I have noticed that many starship analysis videos like this think that the multi-level bridge design is merely for aesthetics and, as this video's narrator has speculated is "a trip hazard." As a technician who has spent more than enough of his years in combat zoned-based command centers, a multi-level bridge design allows all stations to view the main viewscreen at any time from almost any place on the bridge without getting in the way. It's that simple. I don't think I'm spilling state secrets when I tell you that even in 2010, our command centers were constructed so that all of us hoom-ahns assigned to the facility could see the display screens on the main wall effortlessly thanks to multi-level platformed floors. This design also allows for in-room component storage access, like transformer-rectifiers, capacitors, and the like. This is efficient real-world use of space, not just a choice made for a dramatic environment. It's one of those rare situations where actual logistics make for great cinematography. Stepping down from my soap box.

    • @CosmicD
      @CosmicD 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@lykan2 Yeah, lol why not. And I kind of have this idea for near the end of the season about an episode called "the big goodbye", Where we truly say goodbye to Picard because his synth body will do an EOL, then she becomes the captain and we have one episode after that, honoring Picard with a time travel that gives a twist to inner light, as the synth is program to make him live the rest of his life in that dream. But that's just me, I would find that a great homage to one of the best TNG "Picard" episodes: and we see him entering the coordinates where to go to, fulfilling a destiny.
      I know it's kind of esoteric, but that second-lifetime worth of experiences must have had an impact that he would return there for the final moments.

      It's possible, that control and monitoring consoles, being connected to every system and mechanism throughout the vessel, will unintentionally serve as a node, or hub, for power surges, from within and without the hull. With power measured in terrajoules it isn't surprising there would be an explosion. In my experience, from local lighting strikes , the display (television) is the most vulnerable component in the ship, err I mean house.

    • @jameslynch2399

      When they revamped the Discovery for the 32nd century they literally put flamethrowers in the walls of the bridge set that shoot off whenever the ship is "hit." Maybe somebody behind the scenes thought it would look cool but it is unintentionally hilarious, just balls of flame shooting out of random parts of the walls.

    Helm is the pilot in control of maneuvering and thruster control. Navigation is the navigator who sets course way points and monitors any on course obstacles such as asteroid fields. So essentially the navigator sets the route and helps the pilot who is in control of when the ship actually moves manually, automatically, and can perform evasive maneuvering.

    Overall design of the Sagan-class U.S.S. Stargazer NCC-82893: 9.7 of 10.0 on the Way Cool Scale (rev. 2.1)
    Starship geek comment/question: dimensions (ft.-in.) are given on the profile diagram, but the beam was not specified. Looking at the photo diagram with descriptors, the length:width ratio of the combined saucer/2ndary hull section seems to be 3:2; so 1144 ft./348.7 m. to approximately 760 ft./230 ft.?

    Fantastic design of ship. And with Seven as the captain on a field commission she is now one of the most important persons in the Federation being an ex-Borg and natural ambassador to the newly admitted Borg Collective the ship is appropriate to her field rank - which as an ambassador to a “societal group” would be senior to captain….. Perhaps the next series we might see is Star Trek “Seven and the Stargazer”? That would be a treat…

    When I was younger, I use to draw Star Trek style ships with 4, 5, and even 6 "engines".
    One of the ships I drew had 3 "saucers"...One main saucer and two smaller ones staggered above and below the main saucer with 8 "engines".
    I still wish I had them.

    Like other ships, the bridge of the Stargazer is gorgeous! And fascinating! And yet, I can't help but feel, from a practical perspective, that they all seem like they have so much wasted, unused space! That bridge could have all the same stations and instruments, and cut the floor space by 1/4, or maybe even 1/3, if not more!

    So maybe it's just me, but I have one pretty minor gripe with the ship design. Overall I love it, but it bugs the hell out of me that they didn't invert the lower nacelles. It would have looked much cooler with the angled collectors on the front if the top ones were as is, and the bottom nacelles also had the long end on the outside. Other than that, I love the design a lot, and I love the feel of this generation of ships.

    My understanding re the difference in Navigation and Helm Control - Helm Control is sub-light speeds, similar to a pilot, whilst navigation is stellar plotting and updating things such as stellar drift and cartographic charts to compensate for such things. For warp speeds, Navigation would provide updated information for Helm to use for course correction.

    • @chloekaftan
      @chloekaftan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed, navigation has a lot less to do with flying the ship and a lot more to do with plotting a course. Even ships today have that distinct difference between helm and navigation.

  • @st3vorocks290
    @st3vorocks290 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    From the Excelsior to the Galaxy-class, it seemed like nacelles were getting smaller in proportion to the starships they were installed on. Which made strategic sense since they are the most vulnerable targets on a starship. But then, despite multiple major conflicts, Starfleet seemingly decided that longer nacelles that are easier to hit were the way to go.

    Those blue circles you're calling warp field governors, look almost identical to the one that was part of the impulse engine on the Constitution refit (from TMP, TWOK, etc). The original plans for that called it a "plasma stream deflection assembly". Other plans labeled it the "impulse deflection crystal". It would seem to me much more likely to be something related to the impulse engines, therefore. But, having said that, that structure in the Constitution refit did rest at the top of the plasma conduit leading directly down to the warp core. Perhaps the Sagan class has two warp cores?

    I've always wondered why so many screens face the main viewer? Seems like any enemy with the zoom that they're communicating with could just zoom in and see what's on the screens. example shield harmonics or other critical data. Unless there's some type of built-in blur system ?

    On side could be dedicated to ships shields and weapons, while the other could be dedicated to power and engines.
    Or
    By the design you would think that the would be able to separate it into 2 ships? So in an attack they could double the defense.

    Really interesting bridge design. However, regarding where the helmsman and navigator sitting so far forward of the command crew, it seems like the Captain would need to shout his orders to them. I seriously doubt the bridge would be so quiet that they could hear the captain in his/her normal voice volume.

    3:15 I always heard these were part of the impulse engines considering we saw these on the Miranda and Excelsior class ships, on the excelsior they were on the saucer no where near the warp nacelles or even engineering for that mater.

    Thanks for another great video/briefing. Well Done! As a suggestion: USS Pegasus . Yes some of the story is probably classified. Could there be any successors? A?, B?, C?, . . . Would we know or would they be classified? or cloaked? or part of Section 31? Perhaps rumors of development/testing/construction at area 51? Please note the coincidence/conspiracy of information that ends with a 1.

      @@robertsparks3685 - I could, but it would still be a fictional universe (though one that brings me much happiness), and "classification" would still make as much sense as battery-flavored lollipops.
      That said, writers keeping things under wrap, as not to spoil a pending storyline? That's a type of classification I can understand...outside of my years in the IC.

    I love quadruple nacelle ships. Rikers enterprise from the last episode of tng was awesome
    Although something I've always wanted to see....the brige be something akin to the defiant. A triple or quadruple seperater. A single ship that is its own mini fleet. A saucer battleship, bridge be a light maneuverable attack cruiser, and the rear section be a fleet supper ship.

    They must be sure that those Borg upgrades securely hold up. Because the bridge is very exposed and has a window-viewscreen together. Older ships had a holographic viewscreen, that wasn't a vindow. They probably were very confident in their shields. Altough Jurati was able to transport right trough them onto the bridge.

    • @DrewLSsix
      @DrewLSsix 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What makes you think the windows are any more vulnerable? Also.... didn't the Galaxy class and other ships have a skylight?

      @mikkpunning5702 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DrewLSsix I automatically thought a window is thinner than a wall, hence less secure. . I watched some TH-cam videos where plans for these ships were shown. But you are right, the skylights make it very exposed. I guess they (TV-show artistic team) was going to what looks good in TV. I wish they had thought about it more thougrally.

    I would have thought that the Prometheus Class would have taken precedence over a Constellation class refit. The Constellation is larger though. I don't have HBO max so I can't keep track of all these offshoots until bootleg videos come out 🤣
    At least they don't have lens flare generators 😆
    And I am old enough to have watched reruns of TOS...and that one where Daystrom's computer went crazy was one of my favorites. Even Daystrom himself went nuts in that episode and had to be sedated.
