  • 2012 Lexus CT200H steering knock when turning left/right.
    The bolt is Lexus PN: 90119-08560
    UPDATE: Just took the car on a 600 mile trip and the steering was super tight and had no knock sound. No new bolt required!
    Another Update: The sound still has not come back. :-)
    Update: 1/24/23 - Recently the knock came back again. We took the car to a local shop (not Lexus) and it was determined that it was in fact the steering rack causing the problem. We replaced the steering rack and pinion ($1700) and it feels like a new car again. We opted for Lexus parts but I did see several options around $300 for the part only. You may get what you pay for though. I'm glad this video has helped eliminate the noise for at least some period of time for people..

    It worked, tightened the old bolt and just took the car for a drive down a gravel road, noise is 100% gone. This has made me happy, thought is was the top strut mounts or something loose under dash. 2012 CT200h now rattle free. Thanks appreciate it.

    oh man. Same here. I had a knocking sound when turning coming from the steering column of my Prius. My Toyota dealer wanted to replace the whole steering column assembly. Out the door $3132. I saw this video the same afternoon, my intermediate shaft is loose, that I knew. After I said no and got my car back, I rushed to check the bolt referenced in this video. Mine was tight, but upon further inspection, there was a loose cap that is supposed to cover the thicker part of the intermediate shaft. I put the cap back in place and I tried to jiggle the shaft again and it doesn't budge. I shouted out, "You gotta be f#$king kidding me!!" Then I take the car for a drive and there is no more knocking. Thank you for posting this video. I saved thousands.

      @@mrppan9599 Ok, I can't upload a picture to TH-cam, but if you pause the video at 1:54, that cap came loose on mine. Then the part beneath the cap when I grabbed it, I was able to shake it and it made the rattle noise. When I pushed the cap back on, with a lot of force, it hasn't made the sound since.

    Thanks Jeff, I just fixed mine (2012 model), gobsmacked that it actually worked!
    I didn't have any sockets, so I bought a set for £20 on amazon.
    I put some foam wrapping on the floor of the car, then wriggled my head underneath the steering wheel, and lay on my back with my bright LED torch beside me, staring up at the steering joint thing.
    I cranked the bolt roughly 1/4 turn, which was as far as I could make it go. The job took less than 1 minute and it's fixed 3 years of annoying rattling. Unbelievable, wish I'd done it sooner. Thanks for saving me a new steering column, which is what my garage recommended.

    Well done Jeff for this superb posting. 100% spot on with this fix. Just done on a 2012 model, ordered the bolt direct from Lexus and 5 mins to fit. Great post and video quality. Most garages will put this down to knuckle joint/steering column/rack etc...... so £2.00 for a bolt saves a lot of time and money. It even feels like a knuckle due to how the vibration travels. Thanks again Jeff 👍🏻

    You are the man!!!! Just save me a whole lot of $$$$ . I have a Toyota Auris hatch that I just purchased with 30k kms and after 3 month it started making that annoying steering noise that's been driving me nuts. And so happened it's past the dealers 90day warranty . So glad I came across ur vid. The issue with mine was the lower bolt. The nuts were tight and I still got the noise. So I decided to remove the bolts and put back in again. Then used a longer rachet for more torque and tightened it quite tight as u mentioned and Waalaa!!!! No noise. Just a tip for others I thought the noise was coming from lower engine bay outside the car but infact it was from inside the car and because it was echoing through the body it sounded like it was outside in the lower engine bay. Hope that helps! But thanks heaps Jeff !!!!!!!!!!!!

    I like how service will charge you complete new column like it's bag of candy not $1200 part. And when you see it is just a $12 bolt (new original)... I had similar issue and got it fixed for free, but with same "you will need to replace the whole column" story attached to it. It's almost like all you need is to change oil and oil filter, and they say to you "we'll need to replace while engine".

    Just FYI...
    Ok guys, I'm new to this forum as I've been also looking for a solution to a "Clunk/Clank" noise that has started after I bought my 15 CT200h. I went under the vehicle to Inspect all of the hardware i.e. bolts, nut fasteners, etc....etc. on the steering/suspension components. I did not find anything loose or missing, bummer :(. I did however do the "Fixes" that have been posted such as tightening the bolt to the steering link assembly, which did not provide any relief. I continued to do the sun roof slide open/close maneuver and again nothing. Finally before changing any thing out, I Intensified my visual inspection on the LH Strut/Coil assembly, I kept staring at the coil and the LH side front fender liner. What did I see? a rub mark between the coil and the plastic fender liner - BINGO! I also noted a clip was missing on the liner and as soon as I Installed it the liner moved away from the strut/coil assembly. Took a test drive and ahhhhh no more clunk/clank. Best 15 minutes I ever spent diagnosing and resolving the Issue I had with my vehicle. I hope this helps some one. Please check the underbody liners, if any are missing the plastic clips, please Install them as it could cause some abnormal noises that otherwise will leave many with a high $$ bill just to solve.
    Cheers to all!

    Thank you Jeff, thank you for a great video, I found the part it sells at Toyota for $1.50, I want to ask you a favor, Can you please show how you got to the location (what parts did you have to take off and how you did that)

    • @coop802
      @coop802  7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Nothing to take off, just lay on floorboard and follow the steering shaft up to the u joint. In my case I simply tightened the bolt a bit and didn't have to replace it. Make sure the wheels are turned straight or you may have to turn them a bit to get the correct position to adjust or remove the bolt.

    Been chasing this sound on my 2016 Infiniti Q50, replaced all wheel hubs, inner and outer tire rods, new brakes and rotors and new tires. Still making this exact noise, I’m about to buy the lower joint for the steering column and see if it stops. Symptoms while driving are pulling to the right and over steering while turning

      You need to check the rack and pinion. That was the cause.

  • @haa1774
    @haa1774 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just remove it and add locktite and put back. But the problem was a loose nut that hold the rack and pinion to the subframe

      I tried this bolt shown on the video but didn't work. I have the same noise as the video shows. Is it the bolts that hold the steering rack in place? Like 3 large bolts with bushings

    Did this also cause a noise when going over bumps? I thought my suspension was shot when I picked my 2012 up. I checked and everything still looked like new. So I'm hoping this is it. I could feel something in the steering wheel when going over bumps.

      Yes! That's what prompted the investigation in the first place. Check it out and see its a very easy resolution even if you have to replace the bolt with the splines.Good luck!

    Which type of the both u replaced Jeff ? Is it normal 12mm both ?

    • @coop802
      @coop802  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not a normal bolt at all, as it had splines near the head. I didn't replace it, just tightened it, but be careful not to OVER tighten it, don't want to break it off.

    • @coop802
      @coop802  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is going to be difficult for sure. I don't think there is enough room to get a drill up there to try and extract the bolt. You may have to remove the steering shafts. I haven't done that one. Good luck!

    Hey can u help i need to fix that problem and might be hearing some knocking but not sure check engine light on

    • @coop802
      @coop802  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      For this problem in particular, its best to lay with your head at the pedals looking up, difficult to do I know, then move the steering wheel back and forth you will hear the issue quite clearly from the joint. As far as the check Engine light Its best to get the codes from the ODBII to see whats causing the issue. I know there is a potential recall on Toyotas and the Traction Control system so if its the traction control light then take it to a dealership. sorry I'm not much more help.

    I have the same knocking sound but its coming from the bottom of the shaft underneath the car. Idk what it is.

    • @coop802
      @coop802  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tough to check that out as the car sits so low. Maybe next time you take it for an oil change you can ask to check it out most likely there in another bolt to another U joint in the steering system. Don't know what else to tell you on that one..

      I didn't actually have to replace the screw, just tightened it. We still drive the car everyday and it has not come back yet. I wouldn't think the PN for the bolt would be different though.
