  • I had the pleasure of refreshing this rare 2001 BMW X5 3.0 5 speed manual. There were less than 5000 of these manual X5s brought to the US and even less 3.0. Some may consider this a unicorn car! We refreshed all of the suspension and in this video we replaced the clutch and flywheel. With the transmission removed we replaced the shift rod seal, input and output shaft seal, all of the shift detents, fixed the fifth gear lean, and replaced the transfer case mount. We give a general overview on replacing the clutch and flywheel on this 5 speed manual BMW, but this is not a full tutorial on the procedure.

    My E32 has been mine for what will be 15 years this December. Proud owner of 1988 BMW 750iL. Glad to see these older cars getting love instead of scrapped. These first two generations of X5 are largely loved by fans (E53 and E70).
    These are mechanically similar to the BMW e39 cars.

    Nice content. Haven't been seeing videos like this for a long time. I subscribe to your channel way back when you where in cali. I have that same x5 with manual which I was in love with. Haven't driven it in 2 years. Still runs nice and had a lot of fun in it. Been thinking of getting rid of it since life won't let me work on it. Wife been telling me to get rid of it but I can let go. Took me 2 years to find it manual and had it for 8 years now. This video I click on accident and now u inspired me to bring it back. Im in Cali. And it was always a dream to put a TS supercharger and before money was issue. Now money is there but no time. Thank you for the content really appreciated and know that a simple how to video inspired me to bring my SAV back on the road.

    After doing the same thing on my toyota tacoma, I vowed to always place the transmission in first gear before removing. That way, when mating it back up again, all I have to do to get the splines to engage with the flywheel is to turn the output shaft. I tried 6 times before using this trick. I was at wit's end.

    Jason, you make everything look easy....... That was tricky - pulling that out the Transmission and putting it back in without removing the exhaust - that was Awesome!..........I am sure Calif. Cars have less rust because of No Snow in most parts and dry climate, no humidity compared to East Coast. But you have to admit, for an almost 20 yrs East Coast Vehicle, there is very little rust....

    • @ShopLifeTV
      @ShopLifeTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha the editing makes it look easy! I definitely overreacted on the little rust that the X5 has, I have seen and worked on much worse. Cali cars are definitely a treat unless they were parked next to the shore most of their life.

      That’s a great swap! I think the ticket for one of these E53 X5s is an E39 M5 swap into an is model. Would be fun to do the whole “what if BMW offered the X5 M in the first generation” concept.

    Hi! When you release the locking plate on the pressure plate, is the clutch disk clamped down tightly? When I bolted down the pressure plate, torqued to spec, removed the SAC locking plate, removed the alignment tool, the clutch disk was not 100% clamped down. There was still play as I can move it up and down and side to side. Is this normal? I think not but wanted to check with you who have way more knowledge than I do. My intuition tells me that the pressure plate should be clamped down as if the clutch is engaged.

    Hope you marked those props so they go back In the same place.
    Your X5 must be a later model because its using a duel mass flywheel.. Mine is UK 2002 and uses a std clutch and single flywheel.

    I'll have to redo the clutch in my BMW X5 also it has a rear main seal leak causing clutch to slip did you have to remove the starter? to get the manual transmission gearbox out? Also do you know the torque specs for the flywheel or they left handed or right handed threads I know all my truck I think best I can remember you have to turn them to the right to loosen that would be horrible to break the bolts

    When you torqued the bolts on flywheel did it spin freely. Mine seems locked up. Tried to rotate the engine via crank pulley on front without clutch and trans connected still won't spin. The car did sit for a while. So im thinking is froze /locked up. But why would I be able to start in neutral if that be the case. So confused. Don't want to continue with install untill I find out for sure. Most research I've done shows everyone having to lock down flywheel to torque those bolts. Not this. One though. No matter the amount of torque

    No mention of front drive shaft issues on these cars. The front shaft has only about half inch at best spline engagement into the transfer case and they strip out causing instant stop, not good and expensive.to repair. I removed my driveshaft, checked, greased splines and reinstalled with fingers crossed. Slightly longer shafts are available but if you strip out the internal transfer case splines you're in the $hit big time!
