    The Pivot pin is not just plastic but it's nylon. Nylon is very hard wearing and self lubricating. No one talk about the fact that the pivot pin lasted for 20 years?

      Great!!! Do one of automatic transmission e90 n54 thats slipping

    • @billrichardson5386
      @billrichardson5386 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm having a difficult time sorting out an issue with an automatic transmission. It's an e60 with the N62 zf6hp 26. I have a remanufactured transmission, and just sealed up the engine. 293k miles and currently have no stored codes, no leaks, and no exhaust smoke. However, my gear shifter is going into trans malfunction sometimes when moving from park to drive. The code does not store, but it is L1-L4. I believe it is in the shifter assembly. I opened everything up to check for broken wires but did not see any. I tightened everything up and can feel it had all gotten loose. But the fault still happens randomly. I believe the issue is inside the housing of the gear position mechanism at the bottom of the shifter handle, but I do not see any videos or good information on how to remove the entire assembly that would allow me to open it up to check the wiring. There are some threads that point to the tcm, but I do not believe that is the case for me but I cant rule it out completely. Any suggestions? Thanks. Also, the problem seems to occur generally in instances where the car does not seem to find park and will therefore not start unless moved into neutral.

      I have problem with e46 320d manual not working gear

  • @markii72
    @markii72 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I used to own a Z3 with a 5-speed manual made by GETRAG, and it also showed the 5th gear lean. Sometimes when shifting into 5th, the spring of that gate got stuck and it would not center the shifter when taking it out of 5th. It also showed some signs of stubborn shifting with cold outside temperatures, so I drained the old transmission oil while hot and replaced it with Pennzoil Synchromesh (made for GM GETRAG transmissions). It shifted like butter hot and cold afterwards, and the leaning 5th gear problem was completely(!) fixed. That was a cheap fix and money well spent!

    A good video. Thanks.
    I am shocked and dismayed though, that you didn't address removal of the awful shift delay valve!
    I have had 5 BMWs in a row (e39, e30, two e36s and an e83... after discovering the delay valve on the e39 about 2 decades ago, the very first thing I always do is drive up on a ramp, remove the stupid thing and bleed the clutch back hard. (in the M3 and X3 I still have, I also replaced the rubber clutch line with stainless braided just for good measure.
    Your clutch will last twice as long at least (because you aren't always slipping it like a granny shift EVERY time you let the pedal out)
    It definitely doesn't make it difficult to shift! I recently put a stage 3 clutch and UUC evo3 in the M3 and it is still slick and smooth.
    This is a deletion EVERY BMW manual owner should do. It takes minutes and only requires a couple of wrenches. Zero dollars for a huge improvement in shifting.

    I replaced the shift pins in my wife's '02 M Coupe due to the 5th gear lean. It was not as hard as I thought it would be. I've never removed a transmission before and it was much easier than I thought it would be. I bought the tool kit used off eBay then turned around and sold it for more money than I bought it for.
    I wasn't too happy that the shop who replaced the clutch didn't recommend this as the clutch was replaced just a year before. While I was in there I replaced the clutch pivot pin with a brass one like in your video.

    • @ShopLifeTV
      @ShopLifeTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Many shops run on production and would rather replace the big issues only and have faster turnaround. Sometimes these shift pins/detents can cause more of a headache when replacing and shops would lose money since they wouldn't be able to quote the job correctly.

    Another "while your there" moment, is the rear main seal.
    What are the chances of messing that up? I know bmw sells the housing for it with the seal in place so there isn't a chance of pressing it in too deep. But, what about the oil pan gasket area. If sliding a new surface to be sealed on, like the real seal housing, wouldn't that be a big potential problem for new leaks if not careful.
    How could we be sure, after doing the work, we will not acquire a new leak at area where the real seal housing meets the oil pan gasket?
    Also, put in the discription a Link to the pins for the reverse and 5th gear gates, as well as the other pins you mentioned.

    Your videos have been my go-to for keeping up with my E46 M3 maintenance for years now, so thank you for the quality info! I'm not having any luck with my current issue though- my M3 is a 6spd manual (about 120K miles), and suddenly it is hard to engage the shifter into 1st and 2nd gear. The shifter feels like it's not lining up with the gears right... I was able to force it into the gears to get home. From what I've read, it could be as simple as rebuild kit, to a not-so-simple transmission issue. Any advice? Thanks again for your informative and helpful vids!

    Hi, question for you. I am replacing the shifter bushings on my 2000 BMW Z3, instructions call for "slightly dropping" the transmission a little to get access to the top clip. My question is, once I disconnect the gibo isn't the transmission still connected to the engine? a solid item, the transmission will not move "a little" as it is still bolted to the engine right? and if it does it will put stress on the engine. Or will the engine mounts give a little to allow for the "little drop"? thanks.

    I have a question in regards to the spring on the e46 M3 SMG transmission. You said that if that spring breaks the transmission won't shift. Can you explain why this spring breaking causes trouble in shifting. I know that it is the same transmission (and same spring) for the manual version of this car and I've never heard of that happening to the transmission. This spring clicks in the little roller into front (1, 3, 5) or rear (2, 4,6) gates, so I don't know why if it breaks how would it stop the transmission from shifting.

    I couldn't find rebuild parts or a kit for my ZF S6-37BZ. Any suggestions? The gates are still positive, but I'd like to put another 100K miles on it.

    What can cause cold start hard to shift into 1st or reverse even after new fresh ATF fluid change on my E46 330i 6 speed. It is smooth after warming up or driving around. Can that pivot pin cause this problem?

    Hey I have a 330i ZHP and my car rattles while I’m neutral usually only when it’s cold. When I press in the clutch it stops. Wondering if it’s the pin or the throw out bearing or something else? Need help ASAP!

    I have the same year and model 2001 BMW X5 3.0 with a 5 speed. I just picked it up and noticed it is slightly jerky when shifting into 2nd gear. Any ideas or tricks of what it can be?

    @ShopLifeTV I have a Manual 2002 BMW e46 M3 and I rarely(accidentally) while in 1st Gear let go of the Clutch Pedal while the Car is Running and the Car kinda lunges forward from the Rear and you can hear it creak. Is this damaging anything, and if so what parts should be checked/replaced? TY

    Just manual swapped my E39 323 1999 m52tub25
    I can feel some kind of clunk to my shifter when i shift gears and when i push in the clutch during acceleration. but when i gently let off the gas so that the car is not gaining speed and shift, the clunking sound of the clutch wont happen but the clunking to the shifter usually will.
    What could cause this and does anyone else have had the same problem ?
    new clutch,doublemass flywheel and the pressure plate.
    new detents to the 5th gear.
    zf 5 speed, driven 270 000 km / 167770 miles. (axle from the same car)
    just changed alot of chassis stuff too but with no help to the problem.
    got a mechanic to drive the thing and he told that something could be wrong with the new flywheel because to him it felt like solid flywheel when he drove it.
    could it be a flaw in the doublemass flywheel or an wrongfull installation?
