How to Teach ANY DOG to LEAVE IT in 5 Minutes

  • The LEAVE IT command is one of the MOST important things you'll teach. It is one of the very first things I teach puppies and new dogs. Getting your dog to understand LEAVE IT, also known as:
    YUK
    PHOOEY / FOOEY, etc means teaching it in a very clear manner.
    Most people confuse dogs in teaching them leave it, by letting the dog eventually have the object that you said "LEAVE IT" about. In this lesson you'll see why I don't do that. My full length version of this lesson is available at:

    I’m also a member of your online dog training. 👍🏻 This video is appreciated. You know, it doesn’t matter if it’s cheese or a dead bird ( 🙋🏼‍♀️ yes he thought it smelled amazing crazy German Shepherd!) I believe the point is to teach that “ leave it” command is expected obedience in any circumstance. I use a Herm Sprenger choke collar on all my Shepherds. I initially learned proper use from a retired Marine K9 handler. He wasn’t wrong! My 4 1/2 month GSD puppy is learning this command this week, actually. He’s learned sit/stay. Working on “place”. But making it fun. He’ll do anything for string cheese and big hug from me☺️💪🏼🐾🐾(Thank you Robert! Why fix what isn’t broken, right? Tried and true gets the job done😉)

    In my opinion, this is a vital skill for any puppy or dog to have. Not only is it for safety (stop them from eating things, or chasing things), but it also helps to build impulse control. And it's so versatile, to help with many different behavioral issues.

    I watched the full version on your site Robert and I hate saying this, but you are right about most females not being firm enough vocally. When I say "Leave it" then it is very firmly said. I get the ears back , tail low, sorry boss from Zed and that's just for sniffing too long . Food refusal training is essential in my opinion. It can and does save dogs lives. I understand you using a check chain here but for Pica related behaviour I find the E Collar better , after correct collar conditioning ,plus no vocal intonation issues. Great video , thank you Robert : )

      @@RobertCabralDogs My Boxer is now 3 years old. I have spent a lot of time on training her. She will sit, leave it , fetch, knows the names of over 10 of her toys...she picks quite a lot of items up from the floor and puts them in my hand...and will go lay down on command, and at times on her own when she sees we are eating. (Well when only me and mom are in the room)
      I recently got married. My husband allows her to beg....even to the point of laying her head right on his leg. He refuses to tell her to go to her place. I always have to be the heavy even though she doesn't beg from me and she is starting to avoid me. She is starting to go to him with her ball and go to him when he is sitting on the couch but is avoiding me sometimes when I am sitting in my chair.
      What can I do? Please help.

      dogs are not good in generalization. if he was to get stung outside he will prob remember it then as well. that's why you have to "proof" his training by training commands in all types of situations. Eventually, your dog will realize what you are trying to do and expand his generalization.

Im wondering if youd treat the dog the same as if you have a working dog you want to keep as much of the dogs drive as possible as well as handler focus. If you use this method do you think that you risk damaging handler relationship as well as the dogs drive?

    • @Edendog
      @Edendog 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You’ve got to teach “settle”. Get ahead of her. If you can anticipate an exciting situation (like people coming to visit) exercise her well beforehand and teach her to lay down in a place that belongs to her and to “settle” and stay there calmly when people come in the door.
      You will have to ask someone to help by coming over so you can practice this. You’ll have to replace her if she gets up a few times the first few times you do this.
      Also require her to sit if she wants affection from anyone. It’s hard to jump on people if your butt is on the ground. Ask guests to ignore her unless she is sitting.
      Also it’s a good trick to move toward the dog if they start to jump on you. People tend to step back, but if you step into them it puts them off balance and they don’t like it.
      Much easier to just sit and get loved on than to jump and get off balanced and ignored.
      While you’re working on all of this have her on a leash when you know you’re going to be in a situation where she’s going to want to jump on people so you can correct her and prevent the bad habits from really solidifying!

      That must be frustrating! A few thoughts....first, obviously keep them separated to responsibly manage this and also help prevent it from becoming any more of a default activity for them while you are working through this. They need to bond with you NOW separately and individually, through exercise, training, feeding. You will need to spend time on obedience training with each dog individually. What about a puppy class. Can you take one dog and a partner take the other? Alternatively, take one dog and work on the homework with both dogs, separately. Just basic obedience to establish structure, routine and to clearly communicate that you are the leader. If you focus on obedience, structure, exercise etc, they will be more balanced, more likely to want to please you, less bored etc
      You may want to find a balanced, compassionate trainer in your area to help.
      Above all, please continue to research and seek out the best help now. They are young and this can be resolved. At some point, it will become very difficult if not impossible.

    • @PuproarFosters
      @PuproarFosters 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good question. It can be kind of confusing. And really, either would probably be ok.
      It seems Robert uses “good” when he wants the dog to continue the thing that he is doing. So “good” = continue to “leave it”. And he uses YES as a marker AND a release word at the same time. So maybe by saying “yes”, it would be too much like releasing the dog and thus giving him permission to now take the thing he should leave. Clear as mud?

      You can body block the dog to keep him from getting the treat instead of using corrections. And instead of “checking” the leash (or yanking it) just make sure the leash is short enough that the dog can’t get the food.
      I have taught LOADS of dogs to “leave it” without ever needing to use a correction. It’s one way, but you can use others. As long as the dog gets the idea that “leave it” means “I don’t want you to touch that”
      There are a few ways to communicate that

      There is always another way. I work with shelter dogs and I find that not all techniques work on all dogs. Have to find what works for each dog. But I will say, I learned this Leave it from Robert and it is one of the few techniques that seems to work on pretty much every dog. In fact, I have yet to not have it work. I have however adjusted the correction when working with a couple of very soft, shy dogs. In those cases, I tossed the treat farther away so that I could rely on my voice for correction. Gradually tossing the item closer and closer. My main goal when training any dog especially the soft ones, is to not harm our relationship or create any sort of fear or hesitation about working with me. And thankfully, I never have.
      I think it’s great that you try to use as few as corrections as possible! Look at it this way: the consequence of not learning to leave it on command could be far worse for the dog than a well timed, fair correction. (Think snake bite! Or poisonous or toxic something. Or a stone, stick, etc all potentially harmful, some potentially fatal.)

    • @Edendog
      @Edendog 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PuproarFosters I train a lot of puppies (and soft dogs as well and rehab fear-aggressive fosters, too) and kneeling down, teach “leave it” by holding their collar works so well with such dogs. You’re close to them and can be more comforting that way, they respond super well to that, in case you ever have a little guy that needs to learn!
      Also hello to another shelter trainer! There are never enough of us to go around!
      I find that true fear-aggressive dogs will really crumple if they’re corrected. For them it’s all about confidence building. But “leave it”, like you said, is a life or death command! That and not bolting out an open door are sooooo important, you’ve gotta do what will stick for the individual dog.
      It’s just like kids in school. We are all different and learn in different ways. Each dog is his own little mind and you have to be flexible to that for sure!

    I appreciate the fact that the title and length of the video are both exactly 5 minutes.
    However, one concern I have with this technique is the frequent leash corrections. I also heard the use of a choke chain, which is terrible and should NEVER be used. Pain and force should not be your training tools.
    Instead, a less forceful technique to teach "Leave It" is to show your dog a treat in your hand, and close your hand whenever they go for the treat. When they finally wait and stop going for the treat, you introduce the concept of leave it. This can progress to throwing a treat on the ground, covering it with your hand, and repeating until they learn to "leave it."

    • @PuproarFosters
      @PuproarFosters 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s called a chain collar or a choke collar. In the hands of a compassionate, educated handler it provides a little squeeze or pinch. As opposed to a regular flat collar. If you’ve ever noticed someone walking down the sidewalk, being dragged by their dog, that dog is probably wearing a regular old flat collar. Many people feel better seeing them on a dog, but the truth is, when pulling, instead of evenly distributing a “pinch” around the dog like a choke or prong collar would, they put all the pressure on one spot on the dog. This can cause damage to trachea, neck, even spinal cord.
      So the next time you see someone being pulled down the street by their “normal collar”, THAT is the dog you should feel sorry for.

    Generally impressed with Robert’s offerings. However, this leaves much to be desired. Arcane methodology, poor handling, engagement and contradicts much of Robert’s other, better videos (eg., perfecting recall by tossing bait between legs, allowing dog to pass through and PICK UP BAIT FROM THE GROUND). My criticisms are borne out of the high criteria that Robert’s past work has given.

      This is the single most effective way to teach this. I’ve taught it to countless pet dogs as well as shelter dogs. May seem archaic, but it works.

      Robert Cabral I reread my comment to confirm that I never challenged whether or not it “works.” Moreover, I have an appreciation for a certain degree of pragmatic principles in our craft. When, however, a technique or methodology is justified as good, true or correct on the claim that “it works,” one has moved from utility and pragmatics into pragmatism. By the line of reasoning in your reply, one could justify many of the compulsion-based, purely aversive, yank & crank, ecollar on 110 methods of yesteryear and the sloughs of immoral trainers today. So, I’m not convinced. Likewise, that this works doesn’t untie the contradictory knot of your various videos that promote using techniques involving the dog picking up and eating bait from the ground. Note, lastly, in this video, per your talk with the owner, cheese was functioning as the positive reinforcement, while in the same workout you switch up and cheese becomes a “temptation,” as you call it, and the associated object of positive punishment. This is clearly confusing and therefore terribly unfair to the dog.
