Any time I hear about this topic I think of a Dutch TH-camr 'gamemeneer' he was reacting to some talk show about parasocial relationships, and this was 5 years ago so no one was talking about it at the time. And he just stared into the camera and said 'I'm not your friend, let's be clear, I don't know you, you don't know me' and then people started editing and remixing the clip so he would say 'I am your friend, let's be clear, we know eichother, we are friends' it was the funniest thing to 9-year-old me

As a victim myself it wasn't even a celebrity, it was a relative snd they STILL had people refusing to believe me and taking their side. It's seriously that bad out there. Please listen to victims.

ISTG I’m so sick of people who idolize someone to this degree. It’s not healthy. You can be always watching a new video, catching every stream, and donating here and there, and that’s okay. However, THEY DO NOT FEEL THE SAME FOR YOU.

It makes sense to me *how* being a fan of a content creator can LEAD to a parasocial relationship, but it's so, so unhealthy and dangerous for both parties. That's why it's genuinely so important to constantly be mindful when you're thinking about your favs / defending them from backlash / etc and consider if your actions and mindset is rational. You should not put someone on a pedestal who you don't *know*.
    Wonderful and well thought-out video!

Awesome video Mer! Thanks for speaking on this! This is such an important topic that I definitely think needs to be addressed more, especially as of lately with so many situations of parasocial behavior being seen.

Of course!! The lines between admiration and parasocial idolatry have been REALLY blurred recently in the internet world (in some spaces especially) and it’s a bit alarming 😭 I didn’t word things in this video was well as I could’ve lol /lhj

"they'd never do something like that!!" "why would you post their private conversations???"
meanwhile the case against them is a literal crime and not some random petty accusations.
privacy isn't relevant when the behavior of the person is called into question, especially when fans like this won't listen to reason

I really wish that TH-cam + most social media apps just had a lot more tools at our disposal to be able to safely disengage without a person really knowing… (I know there’s the block button/hiding someone, but the amount of drama I’ve seen online over being blocked is crazy!)
I remember being hesitant to start TH-cam for this specific reason-The fear of being idolized. People really create a false statue of you in their heads and usually it’s some extreme hatred or extreme admiration, no in between for TH-camrs, and it SUCKS!! I planned on making a post or vid about not wanting to be held to a pedestal like that; but people are human and are gonna do what they want… So it’ll only help so much until at large we keep shaming the parasocial + stan culture that’s been prevalent for who knows how long now..
    Anyway, rant over- nice vid!

@@thelingeringartist Exactly! Content creators as a whole are sort of distorted by their fanbases into idols who can do no wrong. And even then, people who dislike the creator also have an exaggerated variant-version of the person in their heads. Neither really remind themselves that the person behind it is just…a person? For lack of better word. There becomes a separation at some point of the version of the individual that is idolized and the person themselves-that in turn- the actual creator themselves is sort of dehumanized in a way.
And of course, I think as a whole there has to be some sort of distinction between idolization and admiration. Because it’s fine to look up to a person, yes, but there has to be some sort of general line in the sand. :3

@@MerRants I agree with this, yes. I just wish people knew others were people first and foremost; just because you might know a lot about their life from online doesn’t mean you know them.

Something that might actually be a blessing in disguise is having a irrational fear of parasocial relationships lol, it means you will stop yourself from getting into any because of fear! :]
Honestly parasocial relationships are super uncomfortable to experience even when you don't have anything to do with it- It's just weird to watch someone obsess over a real person who doesn't even know they exist :/

I agree!! This really needs to be spoken about more publicly, its a shame its not talked about enough. Like even myself, I usually refrain from commenting on creators I watch (this being one of the few exceptions) because aside from consuming their content, and liking their posts/videos etc, I dont feel obligated to leave a comment as well. Yes, comments can be a positive thing as well, but I often see a lot of comments trying to get attention from the creator which is not likely. Im not sure if my point is coming across right lol im like half asleep here..but what I mean is, I completely agree! There needs to be some level of seperation between creator and consumer, some people just get too obsessed with their favorite creators, especially lately with how the world has been and its not healthy! Thank you for commenting on this :]
I closed TH-cam and forgot to add the fact I wanted to say, supporting the creator(s) is great! Do that as much as you wish! But there needs to be some sort of boundaries set in place. With how things are currently people often go too far whether it's the viewers getting personal information on the creator or something, or the creator doing something wrong involving a viewer or other such things. The line between reality and the person you know through the screen gets blurred way too often now-a-days and it's worrying.

    • @MerRants
      @MerRants  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

You word this perfectly! The amount of times where fans go haywire and try to gather personal information on creators they like (and then in turn put both them & their families in danger) will never be short of baffling if not outright disgusting.
The fact that boundaries have to be set at all is sad enough. There’s gotta be more boundaries and walls set between the creator, their content, and the individual.
