On May 7, 2016, the mountains around Roanoke, Virginia echoed with the sounds of steam once again. Norfolk & Western 4-8-4 #611, in conjunction with the Virginia Museum of Transportation and Norfolk Southern, pulled a series of excursion trains over former Norfolk & Western Railway rails in and around Roanoke. On the morning of May 7th, N&W 611 kicked off the weekend with a round trip excursion from Roanoke to Lynchburg. The train, named "The Powhatan Arrow" after the N&W's famous passenger train that ran between Norfolk, VA and Cincinnati, OH, took passengers up the Blue Ridge grade and through the towns of Bedford, Lowry, and Forest before arriving and turning at Lynchburg. In the afternoon, 611 pulled an excursion (called "The Pelican") between Roanoke and Walton Junction (right outside of Radford). This train passed through the Montgomery Tunnels and up the steep Christiansburg grade before arriving at the edge of the New River and turning on the wye at Walton Junction. Please enjoy our footage of this event!

I love the new whistle it's more mellow not as course as last years... Almost a sadness to it like an animal calling out for more of its kind and waiting for an answer in vain...

Greetings from Central Australia. So so good to see 611 running again. No doubt in my mind that the J class were one of the finest classes of locomotives ever built - powerful, fast, reliable and very economic to run... but for people like us who love steam engines the greatest thing about them is that they look so graceful!!!! .......Hᴜɢʜ….…..ツ

    Greetings from the UK.
    WOW!
    What a fabulous locomotive.
I have an HO scale model, but this is something else.
Well done everyone who got her back on "main line metals"!

611 isn't running the manassas trips this year, so my dad and I need to learn the Roanoke-Lynchburg-radford areas

Diesels aren't ugly, just like, well, that person you know that who has a great personalty, you know, unattractive maybe but butt ugly, well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder...if you're blind.

Would love to see the OHCR Sugarcreek private car behind the 765 and 611 excursions. That'll be awesome!

It would be quite interesting if 611 and 4014 ever meet. The queen of the rails comes face to face with the king of the rails.
