Okay this video really helped me I was doing some burnouts last night and this problem happened. I reversed all the way home 4:00 in the morning I started to work on it today did exactly what he said it didn't work and for me I put the car in first gear and I did what he said and then I heard that click thanks bro
my 1993 with 276,000 miles did this to me last night after work, had AAA tow me home for free and fixed it today myself for free THANKS for the video saved my butt some $$$ and THE Miata still rolls on Thanks again
Wow, this is a useful video. My 1990 Miata locked into reverse this morning as I pulled into a space in a parking garage to catch a train to work. I found this video while at worked (shhh, don't tell anyone). My wife brought my tools to me at the end of the day, and I had it fixed within 20 minutes. Is there a permanent fix? I understand there was a recall involving a new reverse switch, which I have ordered.
Most helpful video for this issue by far. I knew about the fix but just needed the visual to guide me. Thanks for making it nice and short and for the clear shot of where you are under the car. The tip about which way to insert the tool was really helpful as well.
Thanks for the video, I did get the original issues fixed with this, but it seems I can't slot the shifter into reverse now. Any ideas what might be causing that in this process?

Thanks for this! I have a 90. For me, I just wasn’t getting anything to click in there. I tried neutral, then 1st and then 2nd gear position. In 2nd I was able to feel as I pushed a “springy” piece toward the back of the car a number of times. . When it finally stayed put, it was fixed. I never heard any click or got the sense of something falling into place. Good luck folks!!
Just change the switch. Well, I found out mine was bad when my reversing lights stopped working and since I always needed those, once I changed the switch things have been fine. I believe the switch will also help with that problem you have. I think that pushrod was a bit farther out in the new switch. Don't quote me on that but it's all good now.
Biggest problem with the easiest fix I have ever tried. On the road again and packing a 24 mm and 3 inch stubby screw driver. Just in case. Thanks again
Nah try something small like a really small Allen key and push the metal plate thingy in the whole towards the drivers side I just fixed me 20 mins ago it worked for me
ok going to try this. My car did the same thing had to have a friend come and tow me from autocross 3 hours form home. thought my trans was shot hopefully this works.

Worked awsome. I backed up onto ramps first and was like “where the heck is it”. But then I jacked it up on the side and voila! There it was. Unscrews it, flicked it, screwed it in, good to go! Ok my brother did it! But still in 15 minutes.
This happened again last night. I coasted off a highway off ramp and new instantly I did it again, kind of like closing the keys in the door and that slow motion ohhhh noooo! But I was only 3/4 miles from home so I drove home backwards. A couple tips (yes, I did it by myself this time), I used a 12 inch open end wrench and this got between the exhaust and body of car. I used a stubby screwdriver and after flicking it you can no longer stick the stubby in as far. Also, place the jack closer to the wheel and you will have more room for your shoulder. Thank you NV, this video helped me alot!
This worked on my 1996 Miata with the same problem! The mechanic had quoted me $2,200. So 5 minutes to fix it myself saved me a ton of money!

Does this only happen with the 5 speeds? If so that'll just add 1 more reason for me to do the 6speed swap

What size is the switch wrench 24mm? Could not remove mine with pliers

I had a shop just put swap in a new trans for me and they forgot to plug this in such a headache

Sensor is on driver side of the transmission. Close to the clutch. Glad I could help!

The bolt of the switch in my cousin’s miata is too tight. Can’t remove it yet and we’re turning the wrench counter clockwise.
I bought a 90 as a little project and its doing this exact thing to a T. Will be trying this once I get home.

No, in my particular case I could only shift to 1st, 2nd and neutral. Couldn't actually put it in reverse (properly)
I would have started fixing the shifter linkage... noice.
Miatas don't have any shifter linkages
