They say not to run them with the RPM arms though. I'm torn. Do I get the Tekno axles and stick with the Traxxas arms or get the RPM arms and the Traxxas upgraded axles?
If you plan to seriously bash the Rustler 4x4, I’d strongly recommend the aluminum shock caps. Otherwise be prepared to rebuild your plastic ones after each hard bash run.
Great video! New subscriber as a result! However, I would not recommend the Trenchers for the Rustler 4x4 VXL. Makes it just too flippy. If you are a speed freak, no go. Love the tires, just not on this rig.
Those belted tires won't help increase your speed. They'll just make the truck more stable. In fact, they might slow it down due to higher weight and the fact that they don't expand, which effectively increases the final gear ratio.

hmm you'd think with the bigger tires on it, you'd get at least 1-2-maybe 3 more MPH out of it than the stockers. I also liked he put some sort of protection on his shocks. Lately, for idunno what reason, companies are starting to do away with the shock boots, which I thought was the greatest thing since sliced bread for shock shaft protection from dirt dust and grime. Dunno why they're taking those away. What did he use on his? seems to cover the entire shock. When you said, "Jonah called in sick today, so, yeeeaahh..." I thought the next sentence would be, "So he'll miss us doing speed runs with his truck!" lol Great video as usual!
What about the size difference of the Pro-Line belted Trencher tires and the added 'load' subsequently being placed on the motor? Should you gear down if planning more than speed runs on hard flat surfaces? Burning out one's motor can be such a drag.
Yes, good point; gearing down may be necessary for general driving using the larger Trencher HP tires. You'd have to pay attention to the temps. On a really hot day, definitely necessary. On a colder day, maybe not so much. -Brett
Question for you Brett - So I have a Rustler 4x4 VXL with Pro Line Badlands MX28 wheels/tires, a stock 4tec 2.0 VXL with Ford GT body, and a stock Slash 4x4 Ultimate. I was originally thinking of selling the 4tec and Rustler to buy a 1/10 Maxx, or sell just the 4tec and get a TRX4 sport. So I'd either have the Slash and Maxx, or Slash, Rustler, and TRX4 sport... What would you do? I feel like I'm leaning towards selling just the 4tec and getting a TRX4 sport, not sure if I'll be super into trailing/ crawling but figured maybe it's worth a try? I love off road stuff so I feel like I'd enjoy it. What are your thoughts on the TRX4 sport and just trailing/ crawling in general, and first getting into it? I feel like that's the direction I'm leaning towards because I feel like while the Maxx looks epic, seems like the Rustler 4x4 VXL I already have has a lot of the same features and speed capability. If the Maxx is game changing or something I'd probably go that direction but for now thinking of giving the TRX4 a shot. I'd love to hear your thoughts! I live in WI by the way, Milwaukee suburbs so decent amount of parks, e.t.c around. Thanks Brett have a great day and keep up the awesome work buddy
I guess it depends on what type of driving you enjoy doing the most. Like you said, you may have some overlap in vehicle capabilities, and the Maxx may not offer much of what your Rustler 4X4 can't do; perhaps in fact, your Rustler may offer more high speed performance, where the Maxx falls short. We had a blast with our Maxx, but it sits high and pops a lot of wheelies, especially when you don't want it to. If it was me, I'd ditch the Slash and keep the Rustler 4X4, keep the 4-Tec (I need to hit the pavement full steam sometimes) and get the crawler. Crawling is slow, thought out and gets you on some fun adventures. And, it's super easy for new people to get the hang of it without breaking your truck, if you want to bring someone alone. I know the Slash is fun, but the Rustler jumps better, has self-righting and since it's wider, flips over WAY less. But these are my preferences and your results may very. But I like having a vehicle for all the categories; off-road, on-road and crawling. Kind of keeps you covered for whatever comes up. Hope this gives you some good things to think about! Traxxas has been offering more and more of their vehicles in kit form. They recently announced a Slash 2WD kit will be available soon, they also have their Stampede 4X4 kit and the TRX4 kit. Unfortunately, there are no kits for the Rustler platform yet. -Brett
Could one take the front and rear of a slash 4x4 and bolt it onto the rustler 4x4 chassis or is there a too much difference within those sections? I know the centre shaft would need changing and a LCG would be an easier swap than a HCG.
Hey Brett idk if you remember,I am the guy who asked should I get a slash or something like that. So in surprise instead of getting a slash I got the rustler 4x4 VXL so I had a question, my first one is What are the upgrades you can get on this car like when I try to do jumps the chassi hits the floor hard and scratches it so what would be a good upgrade? Thank you -Nitrodragon
Yeah, that's kind of normal for big landings. The plastic chassis will get a little scraped up but it's very durable. For now, enjoy the truck as is. See if anything breaks and proceed from there. Usually the Traxxas steering servo doesn't last forever and needs to be upgraded. Upgrading the tires and wheels is fun and helps the looks. RPM plastic parts are great upgrades to look into, and they hold up in crashes much better. Here is our Rustler 4X4 parts category: www.amainhobbies.com/traxxas-rustler-4x4-parts/c12909 You can filter the brand on the left side. Let me know what you find! -Brett
I was looking though the website and found some things that I might wanna add since the rustler come with alliminum driveshaft and some other thing. I heard that aluminum shock caps are better than the plastic one and I am thinking of buying the big bore shocks what do those do?
@@nitrodragon8182 The aluminum caps do help because the plastic caps can pop off during something harsh. The big bore shocks are a larger diameter bore, meaning the cylinder holds a greater volume; personally I would avoid those and save money for other items, like tires, upgraded servo, aluminum shock caps. Good research you're doing! Let me know what you find next! -Brett
Hey Brett so I was driving my rustler and it just stopped and I am thinking if the battery is dead but when I let it sit and cool down for a little it still has some battery to spare so how do I know when I need to charge my lipo battery or when do I know when it’s dead.
You're worrying me. You don't seem to be having as much fun as you should. Are you getting enough fiber in your diet. Feeling bound up, maybe? Great video any way. Always look forward to them.
Generally aluminum arms look great, especially if they are colored, but in a hard crash they might bend and be no good. If a plastic arm breaks in a crash, they're pretty inexpensive to replace, usually aluminum is not, but if the price is right, maybe give them a go. -Brett
It depends on what your outdoor temperatures are like. Next time you drive, check the temperature of the motor with your finger. If you can leave your finger on the motor for a few seconds without burning, temperatures are ok. If the motor is too hot, you'll feel it. Just be careful not to burn yourself. -Brett
Looking to buy one of these for my wife.. She started with a brushed 4wd and is ready to upgrade... Really like some oof the upgrades... Would love to find out if those wheels are available for the Sledge and the Hoss
Hey David. Here's what Pro-Line offers for the Trenchers in your size: www.amainhobbies.com/search?s=3.8+trencher The first listing are the "HP" version which means they are belted and very stiff with little give. Great for high rpm, speed run type of driving, or if you are having tire ballooning issues. They are big tires, sized for the Sledge but not Hoss. The 2nd listing are the normal "LP" tires and I believe they are a little smaller than the Sledge tire but they'll fit. I believe they'll fit the Hoss too, although we haven't tried it. The last tires are the "MX38" and they're similar to the last tire, but bigger and most ideal for your Sledge. Hope this helps! -Brett

I bought a 10t but the motor doesn't seem to adjust to get it closer to the ring gear. Any suggestions on gearing or other upgrades with this combination?
Hmm, not sure. Have you changed the insert in the motor plate. Those need to be changed to correspond to the pinion gear size so the gear mesh is set correctly. It's part number 6790. Here's a picture of it: traxxas.com/products/parts/6790 -Brett

Luv your vids man. I was researching my sons car and I want to put the brushless system in his Rustler 4X4 and I found out Traxxas doesn’t put the diff parts all in the Diffs. Why doesTraxxas do that I asked them and their answer is well it’s a brushed model D WE Traxxas only puts half the rear diff parts in the Diffs. Lolol omg I’m done with that stuff. That’s shady and junk to say the least. If I had a RC car to sell I would not lack in putting the correct parts in it if a smaller motor is installed. So I say WHY 😲 if we put The 3 s system in it the Diffs will not last. Their answer is to bad I should know these things. Well how’s that for customer service and communication to the buyer PLEASE tell people these things we all need to know this Especially that Traxxas is not building their Diffs properly in their brushed models. Only the brushed Diffs they do this lack of part installing They do not put the Center block and that’s the most important for structural integrity within the Diffs.
AMain Hobbies Thanks bud. Sry for the rant. I just expected better for the new model. The Rustler 4x4 I’ve been waiting for them to come out. I knew it was a top notch model. My son will keep the brushed system for now but will it fail faster if we put the upgrade system in it. More easily with out the Center block in the Diffs yes it would. It needs to be there. Anywho I do apologize for my words they could have been given in a better form. Thank you for your reviews I am glad you do them for all of us to look watch and learn from.
Initially, no. I think he left it just to experiment with the temperatures, to see if the motor would get too hot, and then make changes as needed. But that was a year or two ago now, not sure what he has done to the truck since then. -Brett

So in surprise instead of getting a slash I got the rustler 4x4 VXL so I had a question, my first one is What are the upgrades you can get on this car like when I try to do jumps the chassi hits the floor hard and scratches it so what would be a good upgrade? Thank you
-Nitrodragon
Yeah, that's kind of normal for big landings. The plastic chassis will get a little scraped up but it's very durable. For now, enjoy the truck as is. See if anything breaks and proceed from there. Usually the Traxxas steering servo doesn't last forever and needs to be upgraded. Upgrading the tires and wheels is fun and helps the looks. RPM plastic parts are great upgrades to look into, and they hold up in crashes much better. Here is our Rustler 4X4 parts category: www.amainhobbies.com/traxxas-rustler-4x4-parts/c12909
You can filter the brand on the left side. Let me know what you find!

@@AMain_Hobbies why would you personally avoid the big bore shocks?
I wonder why he used a GPS speed tracker other that the telemetry options from traxxas?
We already own the GPS Speed Meter. We've never used the app for extra data but that would be a great thing to try.
-Brett
@@AMain_Hobbies Good point. If you already have it, might as well use it 🤷♂️
I have a stamped 2wd vxl should I upgrade it to this truck or the hoss
You're worrying me. You don't seem to be having as much fun as you should. Are you getting enough fiber in your diet. Feeling bound up, maybe? Great video any way. Always look forward to them.
Are aluminum arms a bad idea? My shop has some ( I think they are called ) Ultra. They are fairly inexpensive.
Generally aluminum arms look great, especially if they are colored, but in a hard crash they might bend and be no good. If a plastic arm breaks in a crash, they're pretty inexpensive to replace, usually aluminum is not, but if the price is right, maybe give them a go.
-Brett
@@AMain_Hobbies I might go aluminum with my 8th scale street buggy wheels for speed runs.
they shift crash damage to more expensive and harder to replace parts. really don't recommend them for anything
would you recommend any gearing changes for these tires on that setup ?
It depends on what your outdoor temperatures are like. Next time you drive, check the temperature of the motor with your finger. If you can leave your finger on the motor for a few seconds without burning, temperatures are ok. If the motor is too hot, you'll feel it. Just be careful not to burn yourself.
-Brett
@@AMain_Hobbies lol, that's awesome.
Slide the front out ahah yeah right 😁
Looking to buy one of these for my wife.. She started with a brushed 4wd and is ready to upgrade... Really like some oof the upgrades... Would love to find out if those wheels are available for the Sledge and the Hoss
Hey David. Here's what Pro-Line offers for the Trenchers in your size: www.amainhobbies.com/search?s=3.8+trencher
The first listing are the "HP" version which means they are belted and very stiff with little give.

Thanks for the quick response. You are the 1st shop to get back to me about putting aftermarket parts on these 2 trucks . Everyone else will only talk to me about manufacturer specific parts.... 👍
If i switch my receiver and radio out for my Futaba 7PX will i lose the self-righting feature or is there a way to program that back into the radio?
You lose it. The features requires a TSM enabled Traxxas Rx. Did you buy one of these?

What's BETTER the VXL3S & 3500 combo vs 🏰 1410 with Mamba max pro? 🤔 i really like the stock system. Most of my trucks have the original 2 pole💈 motor b4 they changed to the 4💈
I have this car and bought these tires. I was looking for more ground clearance and but like jumping a lot. I what to try to maintain near stock gearing.
Here's a picture of it: traxxas.com/products/parts/6790
-Brett
fanfan423 do you feel like the stock servo is a bit slower with the bigger tires??
AMain Hobbies what servo do you recommend for the sledgehammer tires. They are heavier and my stock servo is having trouble turning those wheels. I don’t want another traxxas servos
@@andresvillagomez75 Normally I'd recommend this WP120T. It has a lot of torque and it's still waterproof but it's out of stock right now. www.amainhobbies.com/ecopower-wp120t-coreless-waterproof-high-torque-metal-gear-digital-servo-ecp-120t/p734714

AMain Hobbies I heard the metal gear is plastic so it strips very easily is this true?
Nice 💪😎👍
I have the same gearing and tires. I have fans on the motor and esc and the esc is overheating do u have any idea. Gears are a 17t pin with 54t spur
Did he change the pinion gear to accommodate for the larger tires?
No, I don't think he did. But he'd have to once the summer heat warmed up. At the time of this video the heat hadn't picked up yet.
-Brett
Wait so you should keep the dust cloth on when it's hot?
No the opposite. You want to let the heat from the electronics escape out of the chassis to keep them cool, otherwise you might overheat them.
-Brett
@@AMain_Hobbies ohh ok thanks
Always nice videos Brett
How Expensive are your upgrades like Aluminium shocks Aluminium front bumpers front and back plus New Motors and Battery 11.1 WITH a 4000kv or 38000kv Motors with speed Controller
The truck is still newer so there are not too many aluminum upgrades at this point, but here are the Aluminum upgrades for the Rustler 4X4: www.amainhobbies.com/traxxas-rustler-4x4-parts/c12909?s=aluminum&fb=23

Hello. Is there a case for rustler vxl 2019 to run out of stock and I can't buy it in a few months?
Hi Antreas. The Rustler VXL and Rustler 4X4 VXL are out of stock, but we hope to receive more very soon, about June 18th.
-Brett
Its an amazing car man
So rustler 4x4 or e-revo 2.0 for my first traxxas?

the dampers have a cover... is that custom or aftermarket?
They are part of the chassis shroud package from Dusty Motors. This is it: www.amainhobbies.com/dusty-motors-traxxas-stampede-4x4-rustler-4x4-telluride-protection-cover-black-dty-trx0061/p944475

Mine never self rights any ideas why ?
Maybe not enough power, or the ground surface is too mooshy and not hard enough to rock the truck?
-Brett
Running stock gear on 3s and on black top
Jon Dunit mine doesn’t self right either. I have the 5000 mah 3s traxxas battery. Won’t self right
I got the red one also but it’s not the vxl it’s actually the first one that came out which is the xl-5 4x4 traxxas rustler
It might but it won't make hardly any difference. I've had mine off since last true up.
should i change the gearing my mine or should leave it stock
That's up to you. Just be careful not to gear too high or excessive temps could cause the ESC and/or motor to fail.
-Brett
Very nice. Not sure about the cover
The drive shafts are junk on 3s ! If you plan on running 3s upgrade the drive shafts! I have a stampede it's the same drive shafts they explode on 3s !

I'm looking to buy some trencher 2.8 for my rustler vxl 4x4. With the tire being bigger what size of pinion gear would you recommend? Thank you! I love the channel! Much love from Utah ✌🏻
Luv your vids man.
I was researching my sons car and I want to put the brushless system in his Rustler 4X4 and I found out Traxxas doesn’t put the diff parts all in the Diffs.
Why doesTraxxas do that
I asked them and their answer is well it’s a brushed model D WE Traxxas only puts half the rear diff parts in the Diffs.
Well how’s that for customer service and communication to the buyer
PLEASE tell people these things we all need to know this
Especially that Traxxas is not building their Diffs properly in their brushed models.
Only the brushed Diffs they do this lack of part installing
They do not put the Center block and that’s the most important for structural integrity within the Diffs.
Wow, hadn't heard that. You'd definitely want a durable diff with a 3S Brushless system. I'll have to look into this. Thanks for the tip.

Thanks bud.
I have your Rustler.where did you buy that mess zipper cover.I go in sand a lot in Nevada.
did he change the gearing after adding the larger tires?
Initially, no. I think he left it just to experiment with the temperatures, to see if the motor would get too hot, and then make changes as needed. But that was a year or two ago now, not sure what he has done to the truck since then.
-Brett
I want one!
Lets..... go......Brandon !!!!
It sounds like it was on training mode ?
How much would you say all the upgrades cost
Shoot, it's been a while since we made this video but i'd imagine no more than a hundred dollars.
