    I just don't understand how you can look into the eyes of another human being and treat them like this. Someone who helps you in your most private part, your house. Someone who is close to your kids, who is kind off family, even though you are their employer. How can you do this to a human who is close to you? I feel so ashamed

It does not make sense when she said she would not visit her family (daughter in particular) after all these years apart and she's supposedly "free" now.

    • @kuyaleinad4195
      @kuyaleinad4195 6 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Yeah it’s starting to pick up :) The economy is looking good at the moment and the Government is actually starting to build important infrastructure needed to develop the country.
      But the Philippine economy is a bit weird since there are lots of Agricultural jobs (that nobody wants) and lots of Service jobs (that requires highly skilled workers).
      The Philippines lack any real Industrial jobs which makes is the important type of job for a developing economy.
      The Philippines is in no way near running out of Skilled workers (hence why it exports them via OFW’s) so it’s ok to keep Service jobs growing but for the country to succeed, it needs Industry jobs that the poorer in society go to and get lifted out of poverty. That’s probably why there’s a growing wealth gap between the wealthy and the poor... The poor have nothing but agricultural or low service jobs- both types are relatively unattractive for poorer people so they don’t get the jobs they need to get lifted out of poverty. Whilst the rich becomes richer from the privileged of affording high education and working on high service and quaternary-research jobs.
      If the Philippines really wanted to become developed, it needs to grow its industrial capability. No country has actually developed via a service based economy. All had to undergo a period of industrial based economy to get developed.

      the philippine government is full of shit, because they are too lazy to create more jobs. they can't solve the problem of unemployment so that's why they are encouraging many filipinos to work overseas.. they even label ofw's as the countries modern heroes, for me that's the most dumbest shit i ever heard.. these ofw's are serving in other country, and they decided to work for more salary so that they can feed their family, that;s the first thing that comes in their mind when they decided to work abroad. they did not do it for the country but for themselves and their family..

    • @amandawright5163
      @amandawright5163 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Snipethemapples every race had slaves, the only reason white people having black slaves is so significant, is because they were driven out their home with no mercy. Sold like a product. While slaves in their mother land were raised to be a slave, or gained the title by punishment, or they probably worked off debt that way. Black people had no choice, and even kings and queens were forced to bow down to the foreign slave masters.
      Not saying that slavery is okay as long as its your own race, its just that whenever someone brings up slavery, another person comes and says, "Well black people had slaves first so..." it gets quite annoying

    I had a nanny from a South East Asian country as a child, Mira. I remember that she would sing me lullabies, fix my scrapes and bruises and was attentive to my every need. My parents were busy and she was my only source of attention and the only one who cared enough about me to patiently correct me as I misbehaved. Not once did she ever raise her voice or behave with anything less than a quiet calm. My parents didn't abuse her, but they would sometimes make sharp comments to her or talk like she wasn't there. Sometimes she would tell me about her own children who were similar in age to me. She left my family when I was old enough to be shipped off to school and went back home. Looking back I can't have imagined any other reason for her to be so far away from home taking care of a child not her own and dealing with my parents, than the simple need to survive and make sure her family would be able to live. I can't believe people would take the honest care some of these women offer and abuse it in such a way.

    I'm also from the Philippines and had worked in a restaurant in Dubai. Generally, the whole country is safe and beautiful.
    But working there is different. Before I flew, I know and checked their laws that it's illegal for the employer to get ones passport. As soon as we got there, they held our passports. We have our accommodation and free meals. But I know in the first place something's not right. There are lots of migrant workers out there (whom mostly are from India and South Asia). Their life is much worse than ours. Have no decent accommodation, work overtime, some even sleep on the toilet and not so clean food.
    Whenever I visit a grocery store, I sometimes see a Filipina maid, following her master everywhere wearing their pink uniforms. I don't see smiles on their faces. I just want to approach and comfort them and say "let's just go back to our land" but I can't. 😢
    I resigned after 6 months and didn't finished my 2 years contract. I just realized that is not my fate.

    • @squishylavender9095

      James oh thats so sad 😟... no wonder whenever i see some employees working in dubai ..They seem serious..like exhausted or unhappy... and i always wonder why..
      Thats just horrible... The Arabs need to treat the workers better.. I understand that slaves are not being treated fairly too.. i always see maids that come along with other families and they seem soo sad ..
      No human is the slave of another..God had made us all equal..and we deserve to be treated equally too.. Not to mention that during Ramadan, they arent allowed to eat infront of Muslims.. im a Muslim myself and i feel like thats totally unfair.. why dont they just put up some sort of barriers or something that will block the view of the food court and allow the ones who arent Muslims to eat there..or at least let the employees eat.. I dont mind if they do eat in Ramadan tbh.. The Arabs also have imposed very strict rules..

    • @squishylavender9095
      @squishylavender9095 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      James Despite the strict rules, i can agree that its a safe place to work..
      Alot of Chinese people are living here in Pakistan and getting alot of help too and some work here too and are treated with respect but its kinda risky because of safety issues .

    • @James1230
      @James1230 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Squishylavender 909 yes.
      They still have to realize not because they hired maids to work with them, they should treat them like robots.. They are also humans, they starve, they get tired they also need some personal space... Especially in Kuwait, there are a lot of Filipino maids who are getting abused (either physically, verbally and even sexually).. Though there are also nice employers, but I seldom hear about them... Now, the government imposed a ban of sending OFW's (new workers) to Kuwait..

    • @James1230
      @James1230 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Squishylavender 909 maybe their reason for not allowing everyone to eat during ramadan, is because that's their land, everyone must abide by the rules though you're muslim or not.. Though UAE is an open country, they're still strict when it comes to that...
      It's good that migrant workers in your country is treated well, plus I think it's the fact that they are working professionally..

      @CloverLuckable 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      James This is so true. I lived there for a huge chunk of my life. Growing up, I thought the discrimination thrown because of my way made me think this was normal. I thought that while working under them, facing such behaviour and sometimes having them violate our rights was just the way things were and theres nothing to be done about it. But these workers don't deserve this no matter what. I wish the issues immigrants face in the middle east gets far more coverage than its getting.

Racism so bad so much worse than America.
    it disgust me the amount of mistreatment that is happening but I cant really change the way people think or behave and i personally do not condemn any of their behavior and be quick to point out the mistreatment
    they are slaves to their employers and the society thinks nothing of it, and does not see it as a problem
    I wish that i can change the way people think and behave but I can't, what i can do is fight against this discrimination and side with the oppressed, i will do whatever i can to advocate for this and support those in need of my help

    So heartbreaking! I had a friend from the Philippines about 7 years ago who also worked as a housemaid but in the UAE, and she basically described a similar situation as this woman and she said she couldn't escape. Unfortunately, I lost contact with her not long after.

    God Bless you, Mitos. I remember back in college I had to to conduct an interview in OWWA, a government agency where aspiring Overseas Filipino Workers are given orientation about the country they'll be working at. I learned that these housemaid get only $240/ month. From this amount, more than half goes to the agency, they keep very little for themselves, then they send all the remaining money to their family.
    Imagine how little money was that for all the insults, hunger, loneliness, and pain they had to endure. Some even get sent home dead, brutally killed by their employer. The most horrible story I've read was a Filipino maid over 50 years old who was working in the middle east was found dead with a cucumber on her ***. A dead body with cucumber on her ***! So cruel. That's an old woman who deserve respect and was only there to make ends meet.
    Most of these maids are moms- they have kids at home barely eating anything and getting the right education because the country is also poor. Guys, it won't do you any good to hurt other people. Just. Be. Kind. Karma's just around the corner.

    This is unacceptable. When I read Antiemetic for Homesickness byRomalyn Ante, I felt so much compassion for Filipino overseas workers. Your story is heard. Thank you for sharing

    When I used to live in Dubai, I would see and hear about so many female maids who were treated no better than slaves. I always wished I could do something to help them, but there was always the fear of being deported. So I am very glad the situation of these workers is coming to light now...

      Why was there a "fear" from deportation? When treated like a slave, deportation to your home country is the best thing that can happen

    This is very normal in all the Arab countries!! 90% of household workers has this kind of life there. And I was one of that 90%. I was that my employers took me anywhere they go for vacation or even the madam will take me with her and the kids when she go out. And that's the only time I can go out as well because day off wasn't allowed. On the first year I received $200 monthly salary and $350 after 2 years that was way back in 2010-2014

      when she come back into PH she wasn't able to feed her child or support their basic needs.
      lot of filipino go abroad because the salary in the PH is so low.When you're a maid in Philippines maybe your monthly salary is around PHP3000 to 4000 ($50).Its all about the family that they are thinking thats why lot of filipinos is tough enough to endure all the pain and make sacrifices.We call them OFW or overseas filipino worker and they had a huge role on our economy.So sad that even they had contributed so well to our economy government still doesn't have enough care and support for them.Sad truth ,sorry for wrong grammar.

    It is actually very common in HK and in India. Housemaid room, if any, is quite shitty. I know this bcuz even in the Embassy of India diplomat's houses are constructed this way (Senior officers). HK too, some apartments are constructed that way. Not a place for a human being to work or live.

    My family had a maid back when we were in Hong Kong, to be honest it was really common among families in Hong Kong. Really though, some families treat their maids like crap, you can tell they just need to money in order to continue... it’s sad that this is still happening...

      Servants and maids should always be shown respect, after all, even though you're paying, they are serving you. They should be allowed decent sleep, food, and should always be shown gratitude.

    She is an educated woman but poverty and lack of opportunities in our country forced her to go overseas to work as a modern day slave. Stories like this is very common in the Philippines and i pray that one day those who are working in the government will be bothered and work with their conscience.
