Fred. If you could only have 1 baofeng, which 'feng would you have?? Theres a question for you matey!! And definitely a video that might get the arguments flying in the comments 😂
UV-82HP with extended battery. Great ergonomics, spectrally clean, great TX/RX audio, and built like a tank. Been my EDC for four years and still going strong. I have two. I also have a UV-5R, UV-5GT, Radioddity GA-510, a few other Fengs I've accumulated. The UV-82 remains my go to rig.
I was starting to regret buying a Quansheng UV-K5(8), due to the Baofeng K5's bigger colour screen & better speaker until you got to the scanning demo at 18:00 mins and pointed out you couldn't set an upper scanning range limit. Then I felt better, as the lack of that feature would be useless for what I use my Quansheng for!
i am the man! use the 5RM in the chirp list under Baofeng to program it if you havent got the updated version! the radio aslo does the 220 portion of the ham band and it does do air band!
As I've said many times recently, what an interesting time for comms. From the big old brick handhelds back in the day, that ate 10 AA batteries, to Baofeng radios, now at the top of the board for cheap radios, the Quensheng radios. At the price range and size comparison of the 80's to what we have at bang for your buck, what is coming next! Very interesting time for radio...im now getting into Meshtastic...and am sure that will become much more advanced soon too. As far as comms go, it's an exiting time to be alive. Baofeng really need to step up their game...they used to set the standard with their low budget radio range...but Quansheng are the new kids on the block
About 20 years ago I thought that it should be no problem to make a radio with modifiable firmware. I am sure that this was simply not wanted by manufacturers. Shame that finally we got it from China, for a price that is incredible. I hope that there will be successors with more firmware memory and wider frequeny range.
But the new Baofeng K5/ UV-5RM / UV-5RH out power any quanshang with a real 8w If range is the most important feature the the Baos win and lowes cost per watt too Last week on aliexpress i bought a Bao UV5-RH for 16 quid thats 2 quid per watt
Hi Fred. Baofeng is a bit odd.. I bought a 1st generation UV17R (blue screen) version and shortly after I bought a UV17R-Plus (black screen) Completely different manuals!! Completely different!! But, credit where credit is due.. baofeng and all those related brands are much appreciated worldwide. My personal favourite is the uv-82 with the 2 ptt's
Made an interesting discovery today. I recently picked up one of the Baofeng K5 Plus radio and was thinking the battery looked familiar. Turns out the set of Baofeng UV-5R GMRS radios I picked about a year ago all use the exact same battery and all have USB-C charging built into the battery, so that's a plus.
Another good review, but I think I'll save some dosh for a change as I can't think I can see any great improvements over what I've already got. BTW I first bought the Baofeng UV-3R which I believe came out in 2011 & then the UV-5R in 2012.
go to file then select open stock config, the pmr and lpd frequenties are in there, also if program frequenties in it where you only want to listen, then you can disable transmit in chirp for those channels 73,s 19ct031

Fred is, 'Secret agent man!, Secret agent Man!' A SOTP sign! haha!! Or he's 'Q', everything radio. The 'Bobbies' are going to come and tackle you! lol Always enjoyable!
Just fiddled with the menu... seems like MENU ITEM 4 allows you to change the BACKLIGHT duration from default 5 SECS up to 20-30 secs or so but then theres an option that says "ON" which I believe is ALWAYS ON... im just learning but hope this helps
As a non-radio person (but I want to be), it's clear to me that Baofeng didn't copy anybody. It's blatantly obvious that both radio brands are made at the same factory with only minor cosmetic differences to change the brand name. Just like Black&Decker, Dewalt, Ryobi, etc...they're all designed and manufactured at the same factory by the same technicians. Change the trim color and POOF! you have a different brand.
Thanks Fred for showing me another temptation radio…😅! However, any portable that weighs 26 pounds doesn’t seem to be a radio my back can handle…😂! 73! Have a great day!
Friend, tell me, do you have a program for flashing channels? Using "chirp" it is not possible to enter both Rx and Tx frequencies at once. The radio is good for beginners. I was pleased with the frequency capture.
You can't go wrong for the money can you Fred. I've just picked up a UV5RH with the frequency sniffer, it's not as good as Unidens close call but it works. Happy days 😉
That's what the Chinese do best Fred, they sell us the same radio repackaged. All these variants are almost the same. Give us a fancy housing a bigger screen longer antenna bigger battery. It's all chop suey Fred 😂
I tried mine on PMR and it bleeds into the channels either side. The GT-5R I have as you would expect does not. Its a noisy one. Thats set to mid power.
