The lower resolution of the RG405M matches the CRT TV's resolution. Retro games have never been so beautiful on this device. It also does save resources for better performance. It's a win for the RG405M and actually the reason why I picked it over the RP3+.

old consoles tend to output an even lower resolution than regular PAL or NTSC, so if you want pixel perfect upscale, the Retroid Pocket 3+ actually utilizes more of the screen than the RG405M while still having a perfect picture. (It's just how the math works in which a full upscale happens to fill the screen more for that particular resolution)

@@tosvus they still output in 4:3 though. like unless you really care about PSP or native android games I really don't see the point for anything other than a 4:3 screen. vast majority of consoles you'll be emulating will be 4:3....

Another big thing is the more pixels there are, the more battery is generally used. If you are playing a 480x600 game usually, why burn the juice of 3x those pixels with a 1080p or the like screen?

The whole idea of the 640 x 480 4:3 screen on the RG405M is that it matches retro systems better. We are talking retro handhelds right? Dreamcast, Gamecube, PS2, were all 640 x 480 resolution so it matches 1:1 pixel mapping perfectly. Other systems like PS1, Neo Geo, Genesis, N64, arcade etc? Those were all 320x240 or very close so again it is an even 2X integer scale. PS1 at 2X resolution internal render is a perfect integer 2X at 640 x 480. The RP3+ is a weird resolution and non retro friendly aspect ratio that does not go into any retro systems evenly. That means odd uneven pixel scaling filtering and stretching that makes many games look soft, or often makes pixel art look just plain ugly. The "bigger" screen on the RP3+ really does not give a bigger image when playing 4:3 content either, it just makes the unit bulkier. Higher resolution is not always better when it comes to emulation. So yes there are some things better about the RP3+ but it is not a clear winner depending on someone's use case.

    • @TXFDA
      @TXFDA 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Honestly, I don't have the RG405M. But I understand the feeling of wanting a "pocket friendly daily driver". I have a Retroid Pocket 2+, and while I DO like it, it's a tad bigger, and it has analog sticks and triggers that get caught on things if you don't have a case for it. So I went and bought a Miyoo Mini Plus specifically as something that's more comfortable to carry around with me. It's smaller, and there's no sticks to get caught on things, and even the shoulder buttons have a flat edge that lines up with the battery-section so the whole back is flat too.
It's nice having a more powerful handheld for normal use. But it's also nice having something a bit cheaper and smaller that you can just carry around outside and not worry as much about it catching on stuff, or about the shell getting a little scratched up.

Just my observations the RP3+ deff has better aesthetics and those trigger buttons but RG405M with Gamma seems hard to beat, look at the size of the thing! It's tiny compared to RP3+ and 4:3 screen is more appealing for old-school. If I were to pick up 1 of these today it would probably be the 405. That said realistically I think i'll just wait a year and see what comes out, I currently have a 2DSXL that I am using for emulation.

Ive heard that typically the 405m on stockOS actually performs worse than retroids version of Android when it comes to GameCube and PS2.
And only after updating to Gamma, does the 405m fall in line with the RP3+ but never exceeds it.

I bought the 405m because of the aspect ratio and lower resolution. I want to play the games as close as possible to how I first experienced them. I stick a pal filter over the top to give it an old TV feel.

But I still would recommend the rp3+ over it because the 16:9 screen is better for DS and psp games. And the black bars for all others isn’t bad at all. Weird, my RG405m does not rattle. At all. RP3+ is great and can be an all rounder but pocketability is awesome on the 405m. I have a Miyoo Mini Plus and the convenience of having it all the time because it doesn't take up much space is great. That's a major selling point for me. I was considering the RG505 OR the RP2s before and ended up with the 405m because of portability reasons. The screen is ok but it could be better, 4 inches is good but I wish it were 3:2 so to better make use of PSP performance. The biggest deal breaker for me is that retroid devices in my country are overpriced to the moon. Anbernics are just a little bit cheaper. Like retail price plus shipping and a few extra for profit/taxes. But not as much as an RP3+ where it costs over $200. So it was a no for me. Loving my 405m btw

Ideally we'd need higher end ARM SOCs with bigger 4/3 screens (5 inches or more), as well as big 16/9 OLED screens. The screen of the original PS VITA was such a marvel for the eyes....

  • @ProphitDesigns
    @ProphitDesigns 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

I think the biggest factor here for me is the display.
A higher res 16:9 display allows native Android gaming. Better screen for streaming. PSP titles at 2x+ resolution. Widescreen hacks for Dreamcast and N64 which makes many titles feel like remasters. GBA's native 3:2 ratio scales great at 16:9. And systems like DS and 3DS have plenty of screen real estate to show both screens at the same time.
Oh! Not to mention that the bit of light Switch emulation it can do also looks great on that 16:9 display. It's like a Switch Lite Mini.

I agree the Retroid is pobably better for newomers to the hobby, but the RG405M is a solid little handheld. The only knock I have against it, is that it doesn't have HDMI if I want to plug it in to a tv. I don't have anywhere near as much rattling like you showed in your video at 2:30 (maybe you just have a bad unit )😅. I own both and imo the quality of the RP3+ is slightly better, but when I play on the go there is no way I choose it over my RG405M. It just feels better. And the main reasons are gammaOS, Buttons and Sticks/D-Pad and the screen, because even it has a worse resolution, everything looks better imo.
Over here the RG405M costs 140$ and the RP3+ 180$.

The 405M doesn't really have a "worse" resolution it just isn't as high. It is actually an advantage because 640x480 matches some systems exact, and others are an even 2X scale. For retro matching aspect ratio and an even integer scale will most of the time look much better. The "lower resolution" will actually look sharper in many cases because you can run it without any filtering and have even pixels.

Good video, I don't necessarily disagree with these points but I think it misses why Wulf and others prefer the RG405m. It's arguing features but missing design value.
Thing is, if you don't care about pocketability and use this just as a full emulation device with 16:9, hdmi out and full triggers you have many better options than the RP3+ for just a bit more money; eg Odin or Pocket Air. Hell, just get a controller attachment to your phone.
Or spend the cash on a gaming umpc; those are starting to come out with better pricing and the AMD chips will beat anything these devices do by a country mile running much better OS with steamos or windows with all the physical features people want.
Neither the RP3+ or RG405m imo are your best bet if just having a handheld gaming device is your goal. The RG405m is much more pocketable and the 4:3 screen res fits what most people will use it for.
Also, needing gammaos isn't really a downside bc the RP3+ doesn't have the best OS either. It's a shame these devices don't come with great OS but it's just what happens with budget chinese handhelds.
At launch this would be a huge reason to not get it but now there is a fix, its existence isn't an issue to purchase now.
At least in my opinion and what Wulf was getting at. If you want what the RP3+ offers imo it's not worth it. But there is no equivalent to the RG403m that is as much power and versatility in a compact size atm.
It's a niche I hope more companies start to attempt with the RG405m's popularity. But for right now it's the best at what it's trying to do and the RP3+ isn't really comparible.

I might be a bit late to the discussion, but I completely disagree.
GammaOS significantly enhances the RG405M and RG505, particularly in terms of user interface, reduced bloatware, and most notably, BATTERY LIFE. The improvement is ridiculous that I can enjoy up to 20ish hours of gaming on this little beast. More than that if someone is investing over $200 in an emulation device, it's likely not their first. The reason for choosing RG405M over the RP3+ comes down to the very niche (yet highly desired) 4:3 aspect ratio, which to this day is a decision I do not regret.
As an owner of both 1st and 2nd gen Odins, a Steam Deck, and various Anbernic, Miyoo, and Retroid devices, the 405M's flawless Dreamcast and N64 emulation with a native 4:3 aspect ratio is still something I cannot do without. The only other devices that can compete are the Retroid Pocket 2+(slightly less powerful) and Anbernic's RG405V (which I highly disliked due to its design). I never expected PSP, PS2, or GameCube emulation because that's what my Odin 2 is for. Additionally, the community support is fantastic. I've even ordered stacked shoulder buttons to potentially fix the "rattling" issue and improve ergonomics. The "clicky" select and home buttons are something I actually like as well; I think they add a nice touch. So all in all love your vids man, but it's a hard nope from me.

You also don't mention the significant advantages of the 405 with Gamma OS such as settings done already and controller mapping for Android games. Most people would also say the Anbernic buttons are better which you note as well.
It's also as if you forgot about the RG 505 which basically has the same internals but an OLED widescreen so if someone doesn't want 4:3 they don't have to and get all the benefits of an OLED screen. Which means no ghosting and perfect blacks, two things the RP3+ don't do.
If you do a battery test the Gamma OS devices smash the RP3+.
Not sure what you think was wrong here with Wolf Den's opinion. You have to take such a specific view to say Wolf Den was wrong and even then it takes valuing a bunch of minor things greatly over what the 405 offers. Sorry but this was bad clickbait and solidified my choice for the RG 405 instead. I am actually going to buy the RG 405 M right after this comment which at the time of this comment holds a huge price advantage over the RP3+ metal edition.

I never mentioned the 505 because it’s an u related device (this was a comparison of the metal devices). I honestly don’t think the rattling is something to ignore, the longer you own it the more annoying it becomes, especially when you have another device that’s put together more solidly. And then regarding GammaOS I will be making a separate video about that, while it does make a lot of improvements there are also somethings you lose, like the nice interface Anbernic put together. While performance is important, a lot of my viewers are out off by all these setups and custom firmwares.

@adinwalls I'm saying it makes no sense to fault the Anbernic device for not being 16:9 and being 4:3 as they made two devices with virtually the same hardware to satisfy both 16:9 and 4:3 crowds. To call that a point against the 405 is strictly your preference in another extremely nit-picky way. The RG 405 M is the only 4:3 T618 device currently. People are interested because it's 4:3. It has no competitors outside of the Retroid 2S which is a step below with its T610 and smaller screen. Whereas the RP3+ has plenty of competitors with the same chipset in the same form factor.
The only way for your argument to work here has to be extremely nit-picky by arguing only for metal designs... but why do that? Wolff Den's argument wasn't metal only.
Likewise, Gamma OS not being the standard for the device is asinine. The installation is safe and easy. There are people out there who don't want to do any of that sure but faulting the device for things that have been fixed is nonsense again as Wulff Den did put Gamma OS on his device.
If you intend to put someone's name into a title then create a nonsensical argument that doesn't even follow their points, what is the point other than click bait?

The only reason I don't really want to support Retroid is the situation with 3/3+. Anbernic loves to put tonnes of devices on the market but it never feels as bad as it was with Retroid. Plus overall design of 405 is really cute and I like 4:3 screen, everything else is indeed better on Retroid 3+

Ya I don’t really understand the ongoing moral issue with Retroid. My limited understanding of what happened was a small company trying to fix an issue they had and stay financially afloat. And they have proven themselves since then.

I think you are, in fact, being a bit disingenuous here.
You list all the flaws of the 405M, but say that the RP3+ has no real flaws, which is fair from the truth.
The oversharpening on the Anbernic is fixed when you use GammaOS.
The Retroid has the start and select buttons in a really bad spot, making it much worse for systems like GBA which used those buttons a lot.
Retroid also has that awful d-pad + face buttons combo that you seem to like, but for me it was unusable to the point where I returned it.
The Retroid also has a worse screen than the Anbernic when it comes to playing most systems they support.

"WULF DEN was WRONG about the RG405M."
I'm sorry but this is the wrong title for this video.
I mostly don't agree with Wulf Den because of his hypocritical takes on Retroid Products, however this video was definitely not a Wulf Den was wrong video. I thought you'd maybe point out some Factual Inaccuracies in Wulf Den's RG405M video. Unfortunately this was a comparison video masked as a "Wulf Den was wrong" video.
Also any comparisons between the RG405M and Retroid Pocket 3+ are completely apples and oranges because both devices have reached their full potential and it's pretty neck and neck. I completely understand that you prefer the Retroid Pocket 3+ over the RG405M due to it's more Modern Control scheme however saying that EVERY Retro Gaming device should have Modern Gaming controls is a dogshit take. These are Retro Gaming devices many of us want them to feel like Retro Gaming devices we've played in the past. I'm not saying some Handhelds can't have modern control schemes but expecting EVERY Retro Gaming device to come with modern controls is basically telling Retro Gamers like myself to F off. Another point I wanted to make is the fact that there's also reports of the RP3+ Metal Version cutting people's hands due the Shell not being smoothed properly before the Anodization Process. Also Retroid has had a long history of bad customer service. I unfortunately was one of their earlier customers. Lastly I usually don't purchase lower end Android Handhelds because the tech inside usually dies out in around a year to a year and a half anyway.
In conclusion, I just want to say that I don't think this was a very good video. It was basically a bias comparison video skewed towards the RP3+ with a misleading title. 😕

I agree the title was slightly misleading. It was unabashedly clickbait. But I don’t think you watched my video fully because I praised the RG405M’s controls. In fact I praised a lot about the RG405M but I concluded that the RP3+ is just a more well rounded machine. Sure it’s nit picking, but that’s tech reviews for you!

I'll be honest, I find a lot of what Wulff Den says to be wrong. From what I've watched of his videos, in regards to handhelds at least, he seems to dislike anything that requires actual work to set up. If it requires any work at all, he'll complain about it as if it's this massive cumbersome process. Honestly, it sounds like he just wants a handheld that's 'plug and play'. Buy handheld, plug in SD Card, play games with absolutely zero set up or changing settings required. And anything more effort than that, and he has some complaining to do.
Hell, despite there being an entire website dedicated to a step-by-step guide to setting up Custom Firmware on a Vita, he even whined and complained that THAT was too hard (before the current vita hack was made).
I mean, as a dude, he seems fine. I've enjoyed his videos in the past. But, his whining about things being 'too hard' or 'too much work' just gets obnoxious tbh. As if emulation in general isn't a bunch of manual work and setup usually, regardless of what you're doing it on.
I get that someone brand new to emulation, emulation handhelds, and modding consoles, might find everything to be a bit complicated and tedious. But, in Wulff Den's case, he knows what he's getting into. He's done enough videos about this stuff that he should have a basic understanding of what he's gonna need to do to set something up. Yet he'll still complain about minor setup, as if it's the end of the world.

Are you serious? The 640x480 resolution is pixel perfect for every system this runs, and they are designed for 4:3. Having a high resolution screen is bad if the games are low resolution, look at a n64 hooked up to a crt vs a 4k display. Better battery life, Better performance, Hall Sensor Joysticks, the metal, the rg405m is literally perfect. RP3+ is worse in every way: stick drift will happen eventually, wide screen is not the right format, the battery life is worse, performance is worse, its plastic and feels cheap, screen resolution is wrong for pixel perfect gaming...no. This video is a terrible take.
