Adorable Chickens and Wild Flowers - How to Paint Watercolour Botanicals Step by Step Tutorial

- Today I'm painting two of my favourite hens from the garden. Mrs Grey and Mrs White are a pair of characters who have to be different. Here they are, having a chat under a tree, maybe discussing how many eggs they have laid today. I show you the sketch and how to paint the hens as well as the line and wash process of painting the wild flowers which surround them.

PAPER
Both these papers (Bockingford and Langton) are ideal for learning to paint, as they offer correct response from the watercolour paint, and yet allow corrections and alterations which more expensive papers do not permit. You need Cold Pressed (NOT) paper. Choice of size is up to you, as is the format.

This paper is ideal for beginners as it is tough yet responsive. It is easy to make corrections on this paper, which has an attractive and distinctive texture. It is available in lots of sizes and as pads, blocks and sheets. It is available in Hot Pressed, NOT and Rough.

The Langton is a high-quality watercolour paper ideal for beginners. The paper is colour-stable, mould-made and acid-free, and is designed to withstand repeated washes without pulping or cockling. BRUSHES
I use mainly round synthetic brushes. You will need sizes 5, 7, 11 and 14. I recommend the following brand: PRO ARTE PROLENE Series 101 or 007
Prolene brushes use refined synthetic fibres specially developed by Pro Arte. A popular and versatile brush. Available in a full range of sizes and shapes. Click on link to see more.

Improved colour holding and pointing properties. Set in a beautiful ferrule which is plated with gold. Polished teak handle completes the brush. Here is a link to a size 7.

My 39 th. After three hours working in the vegetable garden I treated myself on watching a video . The subject I liked very much as your taking an artistic license of it. "ARTISTIC LICENSE SAYS YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PAINT WHAT YOU SEE. YOU PAINT WHAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE. There was a lot I would have liked to see 😂😂 it took 22 minutes before I actually could see what you painted. It was as if I where a fish looking to the world from its fishbowl 😅. Diane, I love this! I don't know what it is about your style, but there's such a vintage look to so many things you paint. This is a fine example. This reminds me of a sort of wallpaper I saw when I was a child. Not exactly the same, but enough to bring back wonderful memories. I love the color choices you used. Dear Diane, it is a pleasure to watch your videos. As beautiful as they are constructed, often the chapters are too. For me, as a viewer, your tutorials are absolutely comprehensible. You show the little bowls with the colours and your scetchbook. Here you show how to mix the colours. It's nice to hear Tamsin in the background. Also, when you are out of the picture, rattling your utensils, looking for something, talking to yourself or your animals. And the noise the birds make outside your studio. I find all that so endearing and absolutely authentic. It doesn't seem staged. You just do it, that's what I find so great. By the way, Benjamin is sitting here right now watching you too. He is of the same opinion as I am 😁

How adorable! Now who wouldn’t want this hanging in their kitchen?? I’ve never painted a hen, but there’s always a first time. I had never painted a bee till I started following you and now I paint bees all the time. (Don’t think I’ll be putting hens in all my pictures, but who knows). Loved your background…dogs barking…was that an owl in the distance? Nature sounds you can only hear this time of year❤️. Thanks Nell! Love your comments! There Is indeed always a first time for painting chickens. Before I started keeping them I haven’t really painted them and thought they were mysterious and difficult, but it turns out they’re actually not that hard! It’s just a matter of simplification. I won’t need very much persuasion to start featuring Liam and Lottie in the videos! Liam is such a typical Golden retriever, and Lottie is a real diva! I’m sure they will enjoy being captured on camera! Thanks for the suggestion! And thanks also for your comments again as usual!
Oh yes and also that probably was an owl you could hear. We had a nest in the chimney next door and we found one of the babies outside, maybe you saw it on the ‘from the garden’ channel. We’ve had a daytime owl all summer. Strange to hear hooting in the middle of the day!

i have just discovered you and I am excited to start. I don't have Naples Yellow. I do have Yellow Medium, Permanent Yellow ight, Hansa Yellow, Azo Yellow, Gamboge, and Lemon Yellow.
Hi nancy, it doesn’t matter if you haven’t got Naples yellow. Naples yellow is just a soft yellow, quite warm but not very strong. I think probably gamboge or lemon yellow would be the best alternative. Hope it helps!
@@DianeAntoneStudio Thanks. I have discovered I have a strong dislike of Gamboge and M. Gram. Too orangey and too sticky! I thought lemon yellow was a cool color and have not been using it. I
love it and will add it to my smaller pallet.
