  • Take a little time for yourself and indulge in some gentle layering of transparent watercolours. Just a few colours and some patience, and you'll be amazed at the depth and beauty you can create.
Download the free sketch here: dianeantone.co...
    The colours I used were:
    Bright Red tinyurl.com/2k...
    Quinacridone gold tinyurl.com/2b...
    Olive Green tinyurl.com/ps...
    Permanent Rose tinyurl.com/bn...

List of Recommended Materials and Equipment from Jacksons Art
    PAPER
Both these papers (Bockingford and Langton) are ideal for learning to paint, as they offer correct response from the watercolour paint, and yet allow corrections and alterations which more expensive papers do not permit. You need Cold Pressed (NOT) paper. Choice of size is up to you, as is the format.
    BOCKINGFORD : GLUED PAD : A4 (8 x 11 ins): 300GSM (140lb): 12 SHEETS : NOT (Cold Pressed Medium Texture) £8
This paper is ideal for beginners as it is tough yet responsive. It is easy to make corrections on this paper, which has an attractive and distinctive texture. It is available in lots of sizes and as pads, blocks and sheets. It is available in Hot Pressed, NOT and Rough.
Here is a link to an A4 glued pad (NOT texture) tinyurl.com/w8...
    DALER ROWNEY: LANGTON : A4 (8 x 11 ins) 300gsm (140lb): 12 SHEETS:NOT (Cold Pressed Medium Texture £8.50
The Langton is a high-quality watercolour paper ideal for beginners. The paper is colour-stable, mould-made and acid-free, and is designed to withstand repeated washes without pulping or cockling. It is available in three surfaces: Hot Pressed, NOT and Rough. It is available in pads, blocks and sheets. Here is a link to an A4 glued pad. tinyurl.com/h7...
    BRUSHES
I use mainly round synthetic brushes. You will need sizes 5, 7, 11 and 14. I recommend the following brand: PRO ARTE PROLENE Series 101 or 007
Prolene brushes use refined synthetic fibres specially developed by Pro Arte. A popular and versatile brush. Available in a full range of sizes and shapes. Click on link to see more.
    PRO ARTE : PROLENE PLUS : SERIES 007 : ROUND : SIZE 7 £5.33
Improved colour holding and pointing properties. Set in a beautiful ferrule which is plated with gold. Polished teak handle completes the brush. Here is a link to a size 7.
    tinyurl.com/be...
    PRO ARTE : PROLENE PLUS : SERIES 101 : ROUND : SIZE 7 £5
Used mainly for watercolour, they are exceedingly hardwearing and unlike sable, will not damage easily. Finished with seamless nickel ferrules, and black polished handles with gold tips. Here is a link to a size 7.
    tinyurl.com/nb...
Here is a link to a Winsor and Newton starters' paint box which would be ideal for a beginner.

    24 colours: amzn.to/3tHJTKI

    TUBE PAINTS
I always have a tube of White Designers Gouache on hand for lights and corrections
    amzn.to/2MZnqYK
These colours are very useful and don't usually appear in the sets the manufacturers make:
    Naples Yellow
    amzn.to/2NhAxEy
    Quinacridone Gold
    amzn.to/3qb3FMs
    Permanent Rose
    amzn.to/3d27oYK
    Indigo

    Sepia

    PAPER
Winsor and Newton Watercolour paper pad 140lb 9 x 12 inches ideal for all watercolour techniques.
    amzn.to/3cTf3Zu
Canson MONTVAL watercolour paper block 140lb 9 x 12 inches ideal for all watercolour techniques. Exceptional resiliance and easy to work with.
    amzn.to/2Z0iOnM
    BRUSHES
Princeton do a good range of synthetic squirrel brushes. This is a size 10 round.
    amzn.to/3q6Y35F
And Winsor and Newton Cotman brushes are also good. This is a size 10 round.
    amzn.to/36Xn8Zb
I often use a rigger brush (called script liner in the US) and this is a link to the Cotman range of riggers, this is size 1.
    amzn.to/3a0nikC
A size 3 would also be useful.
    amzn.to/3q4O14Z
Staedtler Noris Karat Aquarell black watercolour pencils

Diane, this is sooo beautiful & soft; yet detailed…love it💕
Do you tap your brush on the cloth towel or on a paper towel after each water rinse…or do you just tap the brush on the water jar’s edge & retain some water & take up the next watercolour to apply?

I’m in the middle of painting poppies along with you! I can’t thank you enough. THANK YOU! I’ve been painting poppies all summer with little success. I live in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. We have poppies from early spring through autumn. Oh, we’re in California. The poppies start in the spring looking almost red by now(we’re in September) and they have c one through the seasons of turning bright orange red to dark gold to yellow and now thy are a pale gold. With your tutelage I actually made some beautiful poppies.. thank you, again. I have drawn some rocks, several pages of the them and are waiting for the graphite pallet I ordered from your shop. I introduced my sister and my niece to water coloring a while ago and I have suggested they watch your channel. I also told them about you lovely store. I’m so happy I have found you.

Hi Kathy and welcome to the channel! I’m so glad you found us all the way from Sydney, I’m really pleased you are here. The time difference can make it hard to feel connected for you I know, plus of course everyone is always on about things with an American slant. I know I have quite a few ladies from Oz and I wish I knew more about your flora and fauna then I could paint more of it. meanwhile, so glad that you are going to learn the layering of paint for the poppies. It’s great fun and very calming if you just let yourself have the time! Take care xxx

The hardest part is the drying! I love that nothing has to be totally defined but a soft image that sparks imagination 💭 I never thought of using watercolor pencils on wet for definition or pen and ink over dry to make the sketch come through….what a world you have created for me❣️Discovering in my 50’s 😱 Thank you so much Diane for helping to break through my block…to tell the truth, so has embroidery with Sarah Homfray… painting seems to be the technique I lost along the way…it’s amazing how much we all have lost the simple pleasures because of the internet, electronics and technology and perhaps going to the local bar…🙏🏽🙋🏻‍♀️👍🏽Mia

They are especially useful when you’re going to be away from your normal home studio. Or just as a change!

Dianne, your poppies are so beautiful. Thank you for incorporating your paints in the video. It truly helps me learn as I’m a visual learner. I thoroughly enjoy all of your lovely videos. ✨🎨✨

I haven’t finished the piece yet but I just have to say you have helped me so much already. Thank you for actually teaching and not just showing. The other thing…I get so frustrated with myself. I hit my elbow on the chair, knock the light into my Quin Magenta, drop the brush, put my hand in the wet paint and, well, need I go on? When I heard you drop the brush and the cat comment 😅😅I felt so much better. Just what I needed in so many ways.

This is one of the first painting tutorials of yours I did that my dad framed because he liked it. I think it's a cute painting with the little bees added. Thanks for this tutorial!
