Hello Mark, I really enjoy your videos. One question. You said the sigma 16mm is wider than the 18-35, but - for the 18-35, if you use the speed booster, 18 (with a crop factor of ~1.1) is wider than the EF-M mount 16mm with a crop factor of 1.6, right? Thank you so much for your great videos!
The 18-35 is a crop sensor lens, same as the 16, the speed booster is really made to be used with full frame lenses. It may work ok with the 18, you would need to look into that.
Got the m10 love my little white m10 with the kittlens and the 55-200 and the 22mm. And I got it with the beige coloured grip soo in love with my little kit.
I love this video. I saw another video from your channel and was trying my luck to see if you have a video that reviews the best lens for videography. I was in luck when you actually had it!! This is the video everyone should watch if they are looking to upgrade their kits.

I have one issue with bokeh on youtube videos. Yes a blurry background looks great, but to be honest, I watch youtube to check out gear the tuber has in their studio. My main interest is synthesizers followed closely by photography/video and I find it interesting checking out people's set up - I like admiring your photographic collection on your shelf Mark, which is possible with the kit lens but not the faster lenses. I don't find the background a distraction, I find it adds more when I can check out the gear in a studio, but perhaps that's just me? Anyway, super video as I've come to expect. I agree with you, the Sigmas are great lenses (I own the 16, 30 & 56mm f1.4s), but they can be on the heavy side. The Sigma 18-35mm (f1.8 wow), is a bargain!
Yes, that's a very good point, part of the art of composition in photography and video, is deciding what you want in, and out, of focus. Sigma make same great lens, and yes the 18-35 is one of the best of them, many people consider it the best lens ever made. It is a lot of lens for the money.
great video! I love my kit lens and 22mm with the two I feel I can do just about anything. Ditched the m50 for the m6 mk ii I just couldn't stand not having 2 dials and the uncropped 4k makes me very happy!
The EF-M system is underrated. So many good lenses for a affordable price (compared to full frame lenses that is) 😊 And the Sigma 18-35 is a fantastic lens, love the combo with the M6 mark II!
@@markwiemels The other great thing about the Sigma 18-35 with the M50 is that you can use the speed booster with it to really make the 4k mode on the m50 really stand out. It helps to negate the extra crop of the 4k mode and really lets you blow out the background if you want.
Couldn’t agree more. The native prime lenses are great for pretty reasonable prices. What the ef-m mount lacks is fast zooms but it is very adaptable so there are some fast slr zoom lenses available

Any thoughts on that?
Hey Mark! Absolutely love your videos. Very well produced and informative! I'm looking to buy a camera with a budget of around $1200 (with one lens). Here's what I'm looking for in a camera: 1. Twitch live streaming my DJ sets in medium to low lit room with LED lights like your videos. The camera would be placed about two feet away (due to space) and the DJ setup is about 3 feet wide which I want to capture. 2. A camera I can learn photography with and grow with. I'm interested in street photography/artsy photography (going to Austin in a few weeks). What camera would you recommend (m50 mark ii or the m6 mark ii) and what 1 or 2 lenses? Not interested in vlogging but will do cooking videos and DJ sets (Twitch and recorded). Thanks and keep these great videos coming! Appreciate them!
M6 Mark II for sure, it has great 4k with perfect autofocus. For lenses, you shout start with the kits lens and work out how wide you need to shoot, then pick your lens. Check out my best prime lens video, it will explain that better.
Hi! I wonder why you have an adapter on the M50 for the sigma 18-35? I already have the sigma, and i'm looking on the m50. They're compatible? And what do you think about autofocus with this setup^? Thanks!
Hi Mark ! Do u mind to share your camera settings u use with the Viltrox lens ? I bought this one and I am playing now with setting but I am not happy yet so if it possible thanks if not thanks . Take care !
I’ve recently purchased a M50Markll. Your videos helped me make the decision on which camera to get . Thank you for making things easier to understand. I’m just a beginner and it’s just a hobby. There is a lot to learn.I’m a bit overwhelmed. I have a Neewer 25mm F/1.8 mirrorless camera manual lens for canon. Can you tell me how I can get this to work on my m50markll ? I’m having a hard time finding the answer. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you
Hi! So by working, do you mean it won’t take photos? If this is the issue, there is a setting in the menus system called, take photo without lens, or something similar, that needs to be enabled.
I got it, shutter release is what I needed. Thank you for taking the time to reply. I appreciate you and your videos. Looking forward to them. They help beginners like myself a lot!
Hey man! Love the content! But I’m 17 and on a budget, and I do a lot of automotive photography and most of the time when I go shoot the times are random, so what lense would you recommend for an all around budget lense.
Great Video. I recently purchased the m50 for some professional work. Looking to upgrade to a faster lens with great auto focus for a gimbal setup (mainly b-roll and cinematic look). I purchased the sigma 17-50mm but the autofocus is crazy noisy. Would the 18-35 be a good upgrade?
Yes, the 18-35 is a very popular video lens, it makes very small noises when focusing, just a very faint digital type noise. I can't recall if a shotgun mic, on the camera, will pick up the sound or not, an off camera mic will not pick it up for sure.
Hello Mark! I am a travel vlogger with a on location fashion and lifestyle social media presence. I have a Canon m50 ii with the 15-45mm kit lens and also a 50mm F/1.4 . Thinking to get either the cannon 22mm or the Viltrox 23mm for night vlogging and fashion/ lifestyle night photos. Which one would you recommend for my needs, or is there one I haven’t considered?
@@markwiemels your uploads are an excellent help! I have chosen to purchase the Viltrox!!!! I’ve also began to research zoom lenses to complete my set for now. Any recommendations in this focal range or (slightly different)with better low lighting? Ive found the sigma 24-105 f4 and the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L. Prices are a bit more higher. Any other suggestions?
Hey Mark, great video, I noticed you didn't mention the sigma 17-50mm 2.8 in this video? Have you had any experience with it? Seems like a great budget lens for APS-C
@@FrostyFingaz hey! i actually have one i use for the m50. i can’t account for the photos it takes, but the 2.8 constant is amazing. great sharpness and it was like a budget 18-35 with image stabilization for me. only downside is autofocus is extremely loud

When using the Sigma 18-35 on the M50 do you have the camera mounted on the tripod as normal, or using the tripod mount on the adapter? I'm worried about putting such a big heavy lens on such a small camera body
I know crop factor effects the image of full frame lenses. So how does the efm kit lens perform on apsc cameras like m50, would the kit lens of 15-45 act more like a 20-72mm. Or this should not be a factor because it is a lens made for apsc cameras.
The only reason to even think about the crop, is if you have years of experience shooting a full frame camera, and have specific focal lengths that you like to use. Then you need to know the conversion, otherwise it's really not relevant.
@@markwiemels thanks for the response. I only ask this because I have been on my m50 for a year and I have been happy with my progess. ive been using the kit lens and and nifty fifty through out. Most people watching have not even clicked on the youtube gear and increased the res. to HD let alone notice the difference in details. You should instruct them how to do so, I have seen 2 others do it now, it is the new thing this week !!
Marcus Pix just published a whole video about this topic. It is amazing what difference watching in 1080p makes compared to 720 or even 480p. Low res is ok to watch talking head videos but no good to make image comparisons. This here is a great video but IMO blurry backgrounds are overrated unless one is making an art movie.
Hey Mark I just wondering the the difference between the Canon Electronic Viewfinder EVF-DC2 and lets say the viewfinder on the M50? I have heard you mention the EVF as being a little clumsy, but what about actual clarity features whatnot? I am considering buying one but still wondering at the current price if I wouldn't be better off buying a m50 body? Maybe one of those rubber hoods for the LCD screen?
I see no difference between looking through the M50 and looking through the DC2. I actually sold my DC2 and use a DC1 that came with a used Canon M3, the DC2 is OLED, the DC1 is LED. The OLED is suppose to be better, but I tested them side by side and they looked and worked exactly the same,
@@markwiemels Thanks Mark, yeah it sure is allot of money makes me consider going for the second camera. If I had the money I would go for extra camera hands down, it's always a rock and a hard place in life, but is that what makes it fun?
What do you think is better purchase. I would buy them used. It either gonna be the 18-35mm 1.8 (400 bucks) or the 16mm 1.4 plus 32mm 1.4 (total 500 bucks)
The big issue with the 18-35 is the size, if you don’t mind that, I would go with the 18-35. It’s the best lens I have ever used. Think carefully though, because the portability, and usability, of the two lens set, is much better in many situations.
Not sure if you would see this but i am planning on getting the 18-35 sigma lens but was going to ask if there was a lens that would do better in low light for picture and video
That lens is f1.8, lenses that go to f1.4 are better in low light, but not by much, I would take the 18-35 for the zoom function and sharpness (if you don't mind the size and weight of the lens), my other choice would be the Viltrox 23mm, which is f1.4, lighter, and much cheaper.
I am a fine artist and printmaker. I love your videos but what lenses would you use for shooting a painting watercolour the camera must be pointing down over a wide watercolour board that is 2' 9" (84 cm) wide and 2' (61 cm) height on a flat table. What lights would you use? As you can see this is posting indoor vlogging. It does not work well with my iPhone 11. I will use Final Cut Pro to edit it. I hope to exchange my old Canon AE-1 for M6 Mark II.
Most zoom lenses will do, even the 15-45mm kit or EF-M 18-55mm. You will want to do all the settings manually, shoot at f5.6-f8. and you want big soft light. In a prefect world, I would suggest a big 1.4+ meter soft-box boomed overhead, with a daylight COB light. Pretty hard to explain these things in the comment section, as there are lots a variables, like knowledge, budget, space, etc.
@@markwiemels Wow! quick reply Mark! Yes, I know what you mean. I used to work in advertising agencies and have been in photography studios so I have a bit of understanding of lighting. Thank you for your feedback.
@@simonanartist Cool, yah big soft light, looks best and avoids reflections. Cover all other light, including windows. You want full control so the light doesn't change during the video, which doesn't look good.
@@markwiemels I brought the M6 MarkII yesterday and it fits nicely in my hands with the kit lenses. I was surprised with the weight nice balance. What cable for live vlogging and must use and software for this? I will go for an 18" light ring instead of a softbox as your suggested. No hard feeling here!!
As it doesn't have the AF/MF switch that I am used to, I thought it was manual focus only. My mistake. I have borrowed it to test it out and can now see why it is so good. I wasn't using it in the way it has been designed. Thanks for replying earlier, you made me question myself and find the solution.
It’s too tight (ie zoomed in) for a general purpose TH-cam lens. You can use it, and it can look great, but the camera will have to be further away from you, which can make it hard to manage the camera, and see your framing and everything.

I see no difference between looking through the M50 and looking through the DC2. I actually sold my DC2 and use a DC1 that came with a used Canon M3, the DC2 is OLED, the DC1 is LED. The OLED is suppose to be better, but I tested them side by side and they looked and worked exactly the same,
The DC2 is a lot of money new. It works and does the job, but seems like a lot of money for what you get.
@@markwiemels Thanks Mark, yeah it sure is allot of money makes me consider
going for the second camera. If I had the money I would go for extra camera hands down, it's always a rock and a hard place in life, but is that what makes it fun?
what camera would you recommend for live-streaming with the 22mm efm lens? canon m200 or the m6 mark ii?
M6 Mark II is a better camera in every way, but the m200 is also good, just make sure it has "clean hdmi out" as I am not sure it does.
What do you think is better purchase. I would buy them used.
It either gonna be the 18-35mm 1.8 (400 bucks)
or the 16mm 1.4 plus 32mm 1.4 (total 500 bucks)
@@markwiemelsis there an issue of Vignette with the lens? And what is the effect of crop factor in this 18-35mm
@@sriyamsunkavalli5640 no vignette issues. 18-35 is 18-35, regardless of crop, you just get a 1.6 times cropped filed of view.
@markwiemels Which lens would be best for TWO people presenting on a video, side by side?
You can use any of them, just move the camera further back. I would probably go with the sigma 16 or 18-35.
I see that you wear spectacles, as do I. What are your best suggestions when it comes to focusing a lens such as the Sigma 16mm on the M50?
I don't do anything, it just focuses.
@@markwiemels I am using the Sigma 16mm 1.1.4 DC DN 67 and it appears to be totally manual unless I am doing something wrong.
As it doesn't have the AF/MF switch that I am used to, I thought it was manual focus only. My mistake. I have borrowed it to test it out and can now see why it is so good. I wasn't using it in the way it has been designed. Thanks for replying earlier, you made me question myself and find the solution.
@@artisanvideography yes, the autofocus is amazing! Good luck.
The 22 f/2 doesn't get a mention? Rhetorical Question.
So many more lens you could have added🤣But I do own that Sigma 18-35mm and am very happy with it😁👍
Yes, true, was mostly trying to do native mount plus the one "God" lens adapted.
@@markwiemels I use a metabooster (metabones-speedbooster).
what about the sigma 30mm
It’s too tight (ie zoomed in) for a general purpose TH-cam lens. You can use it, and it can look great, but the camera will have to be further away from you, which can make it hard to manage the camera, and see your framing and everything.
I think the M6 Mark II is a better camera but these M mount cameras dont get the love they deserve.
For sure the M6 II is better.
👏👏👏
Thanks!
@@markwiemels as a new m50 owner i came here for the valuable information but keep coming back b/c I enjoy the channel. I like the format, it’s clear, concise and engaging, in-depth but not long-winded, poignant and relatable. As a hobbyist and person of modest means I need to research my purchases thoroughly and your help is appreciated. Terrific stuff, Ty.
@@DansEarway Thanks so much, that’s really what I’m trying to do on this channel, so it means a lot to hear those encouraging words.
Canon EF-M 32mm, and 22mm are not here? you are missing the best two lenses. UNSUBSCRIBED
Check out the best prime lens video, this is the best TH-cam lens, 32mm is a bit to telephoto to be a versatile TH-cam lens, the the 22mm is really good, and good for TH-cam, but the viltrox 23mm is better, so I included it instead.
