Price of milk plunged and that put a lot of small and medium sized dairy farms out of business. Even 10 years ago a dairy farmer told me that they were making the same amount as they did in the 80s, except that in the US expenses were way lower. It just got more and more difficult to make a profit.

Nothing. That's been the problem for 30 years.

Why you Americans dont adopt the the quota system we have here in Canada is beyond me , dont know one canadian dairy farmer singing the blues on the market

Not like Canada's qouta system really helped them much. Last I read,Canada has lost 60% of its dairy farmers since 1990 with more going out daily. Qouta system does help a little but when there's very few wanting to take over, aging farmers just keep going out while other emerge to get bigger.

My grandfather sold out in 1997. His father sold out in 1969. Both due to old age or bad knees. I wasn't old enough to take over at the time and gramp couldn't walk anymore. Most I know going out is age related. Yes,many due to financial issues but a lot more due to age

@@christyler7391their system helps a little while our system actively crushes us. I'll take a little help over a system constantly trying to put me under.

@@JoeRivermanSongwriter a cow will eventually stop producing milk after some time (though it takes awhile) , they just produce less of it as they get older. We’ve been milking the same cows for the last 12 years and they still produce though not as much as they once did. But no point in getting new cows if ours are still producing
