Why are so many older, white people in Britain feeling angry and discontented?

87 here. Because the country we have known, loved, and which my father and uncles fought and died for has systematically been destroyed. The rot really setting in with Sir T Blair. Older people have witnessed the greatest change, and most are extremely angry.

I was just thinking about the generation who have witnessed the radical changes to their country in becoming less white. I am 51 but things are sure different from the 1970-80s when I grew up in Canada. Those younger than us are brain washed with wokeism will have no clue and will live in a society where they are discriminated and wiped out eventually.

I'm angry about the way the tories treated vulnerable people. I'm
Angry about the way the police don't treat male/female domestic abuse equally.
But I don't riot. The issue here is how people express their anger, not the fact that they are angry

I'm 68 and thinking of getting the hell out of it. The Tories had 14 years to halt the decline, curtail immigration, stop the woke nonsense and get out of the ECHR. They blew it. Only into five weeks of Labour and it's even worse than anyone could have imagined. What will it be like after five years of Labour rule?

Most of us ‘oldies’ have spent our lives working and paying taxes only to see what we have invested ourselves in being trashed by communities that dislike us and who on the whole take from a system they never invested in. The governments policy of encouraging illegal immigration is also increasingly irritating especially when they want to negate Englishness and to make other cultures dominant. No, we don’t expect things to be what they were but we do expect the government to protect our borders and effectively manage immigration.

Before I’m accused of being a racist, I’m in favor of legal immigration, we need to have a vibrant and hardworking population to survive in this modern world.

I cannot agree with all of this Simon. It is of course pretty normal for an older generation to feel that things were better in the past. My father, who was born during the first world war, preferred Benny Goodman to Led Zeppelin. He also never wore a pair of denims in his life. But this did not lead him to go and riot in the streets. Incidentally, the High Street played almost no part in his entire life. Shopping was for women. Nor did he go to the pub every night. While every generation sees a lot of change from the past, the seething anger that we see today is of a completely different order and you know the reason as well as I do.

The majority of rioters are young hooligans who are nether far left nor far right but are looking for some excitement. The reason an unusual number of old folk become involved is that the elderly can remember a Britain where everything from the postal service to the NHS worked much better than it does now, and that angers them, the Britain they loved has been taken from them. A further reason is that the police are sometimes provocative and overbearing, and turn what would otherwise be a peaceful demonstration into a riot.
