ThatViolaKid Thanks Drew, inspiring video. I wanna add that recording thing to my practicing. I have already used that kind of diary. And I also set up a certain time for practice, if possible even the same time every day.
Would you like to make a video about how you practice in detail?
Do you do any sports to be physically fit and strong? I would like to exercise more in the gym for my upper body. But by lifting these heavy weights my hands always get so hard and unflexible.
It's like I wanna do something for my body but at the same time I definitely don't wanna lose quality in playing the cello.
Maybe you don't have to make longer videos. When a topic like practicing has many different aspects, you could do a series of videos, like for example David Finckel's cello talks. I'm however well aware of the fact, that there are about 40 years between you and David Finckel. It' s a totally different style.
Have you got any advise from your own experience bringing body workout and string playing together?

I started doing interleaved practice and found my skills and performance has improved tremendously. Look into it!
I just want to thank you for recording while walking through NYC like you do. I've got a little piece of my heart in that city and it always feels amazing to get a glimpse of it as if I were walking through it again. I come back every year but I miss it all the time I'm gone. Thank you!
I've been using these practice methods and my playing seems to be improving 50-75% every day now! I don't do the 10 minute breaks or anything like that, but rather sessions throughout the day, using the methods you use for practicing!
I liked the longer video a lot, because I get to listen to you play, and talk about stuff, and go places; it's all so interesting!! Also, don't you just love how perfectly crafted that ending was written in Borodin's Nocturne? Borodin really knows his way with music!
The quartet itself is a bit annoying! But that Nocturne is dankkkk

Also, I´m an adult beginner (started age 45, 6 years into the journey, violin and viola :-)). What advice do you have for non-professional and/or older players? What should we focus on? Thanks for your great content! Love from Germany!
Hmmmmm, I'll have to think about how to structure that! But that definitely sounds interesting =) Practice sessions are always unique, so I couldn't in good conscience say that if you do THIS every time, you'll be amazing. Different stages of learn require different mechanics--and even then, everyone is good at bad at different things! That's why private teachers are so essential. For an intermediate player like yourself, I would suggest that you cultivate your ear by listening to great players and start recording yourself. Figure out out how they create their sound and experiment with different vibratos, bow speeds, arm weights, bow contacts, and bow distributions. It helps if you approach things scientifically =)
Thanks Drew, this is really helpful. I have a great teacher, but I find your suggestions spot on. Exploring the mystery of sound creation, ear training etc. more thoughtfully / scientifically. Yes. And I´ve never recorded myself. I´ll try that and hope I don´t give up playing after that :-)! Thanks a bunch and keep up the good work!
Just know that you're always improving. Recording only makes that improvement happen faster!

hi! I love your videos so much, especially the Juilliard ones! (dream school, but living in new zealand makes it harder :( ). I've played guitar for 8 years, no grades, and I've recently started saxophone, which I will be doing grades for. However, I feel like everyone my age who plays saxophone (I'm nearly 15) is so much more advanced than me, and have played since they were like 6. I feel like theres no way I could ever catch up. Any advice on how to get more advanced at my instrument a little faster and how to get some more confidence back?

I use a Zoom H4N. And in terms of the neighbors--they don't seem to mind. I typically only practice during the day and never after 11PM, so it's pretty chill.

Hi! So I’ve been listening/watching your videos for the majority of today. I do not play viola, I play the flute. (Been playing off and on for the last 10 years.) However I’ve found your videos insightful and interesting to see another side of music. I’ve never thought of using a practice log but I think I may start. I play in 2 flute only large ensembles. I wanted to ask though, I play 2 Instruments, the C flute and the Bass flute.. in your world, the string world, I doubt many play for than 1 but what’s your thoughts on how to practice well with 2 Instruments? As in.. do you play 1 for a few hours so your warmed up on it and then warm up and switch to the other or so you switch back and forth? It may not matter on a string instrument like it does with a metal woodwind. Just wanted to ask. Thanks!

I'm quite sure my viola is starting to get too small for me, currently using a size 15.5 but maybe heading over to a 16. I was wondering if you had any tips on what kind of viola to purchase, quality, strings, etc.
Another problem is in our orchestra, to be quite honest, only the first two stands play (myself up there.) We had a few judges come over for our performance to score us, and they consistently stated "Violas more sound, more power, etc." Often, our section crumbles during solis in pieces, either due to making a mistake which for some reason causes the violas in the back to stop playing all together or just a plain lack of confidence in their playing because it sounds scratchy and out of place, having a domino effect causing a majority of the section to stop too. I was wondering if you've ever dealt with that, and know anyway to power through that...I've lost the word for it...lack of confidence? that suddenly dawns upon you when you are one of the only 3-4 playing (who eventually also fall).
Sigh...the lack of enthusiasm and confidence within our orchestra's violas has been killing my passion for the instrument. Luckily, I play with chamber which gives me some hope that not all violas are like this but...y'know. It is what it is and it is hard to ignore when your conductor/teacher who started as a violist openly downs your section. Can't wait for high school though, hopefully I will be amongst more of my kind who truly use their instrument like it should be :)

If you want a new instrument, start going to different shops and trying some out. Don't settle! Be explorative and look for a instrument that feels and sounds right!
Don't worry about the other violists. Don't let them bring you down. I dealt with that in school orchestra too. All you have to do is just focus on being better player yourself and people will either be inspired by that, or they'll just fizzle away and you won't have to deal with them anymore =3
literally how everyone practices in my orchestra: play scales, then a run through, then the trouble spots, then take a break which ends up to be 4 hours and we only get like 10 min of practice
when having breaks how do you prevent yourself from getting distracted and just stop playing then?
I set a timer and get back to work on my instrument. It also helps if I don't go to far away from it physically too

So I'm a beginner violin and when I do vibrato it's always off temp and my conductor gets mad at me (I'm always too slow) do you have any ways to help my problem?
Just scrolling through the comments and saw this - I've just gotten past this problem very recently and what I personally did was practice vibrato for an excessive amount of time. And for me it wasn't necessarily doing it as fast as i could, but rather doing it slow for long amounts of time until when I DID try it fast, it came a lot more natural and easier. That's just what worked for me, not sure if this is a universal solution but just saw this comment unanswered here and wanted to see if I could help. :P

Hi! What kind of strings do you recommend for an $1800 "step up" viola? I'm crossed between either Pirastro Chorda's, Pirastro Aricore's, or Dominant's. I mentioned the price because, while my instrument is definitely not as expensive as performance instruments can be, it's also definitely not a student viola. I would like my viola to have a warm, even dark, tone. I am on a bit of a budget, so I wouldn't go for Pirastro Oliv's or Obligato's or Pirastro Passione's (and that might be overkill too?). I also would like to move away from steel core strings. So what kinds of recommendations would you make? #asktvk

I can't really tell you without actually hearing you play haha. And, I wouldn't discourage you from at least auditioning. However, I wanna make sure that you understand that Juilliard is just a school homie. Don't sweat it if you don't make it in! =)
I'm a viola in my school orchestra, and we have practice logs that I hate, but it only requires 120 minutes per week as compared to his which is 3 hours a day. Wow
=) It varies. Sometimes I practice 4 hours. Sometimes I practice 0 hours
Hey I'm 16, I've been playing the guitar for 4 years but I felt like it was not the instrument that I'm built to so I'm deciding to take a cello lesson. Can you give me some advice for my new instrument?
I don't play cello but my friends do, but here are some tips
-practice
-listen or watch other people play cello
-take classes
-pay attention to your teacher ( if you have one )
-try to have fun

It depends. Why do you need to retain your old repertoire? I think simply playing through it slowly keeps it in the fingers :)

Good stuff young man. Would be great if other youths had your desire, however, it comes from a great work ethic that is found from having something peaking your interest - playing music and paying attention in classes. Brandon Simmons your right about the piano but that also goes with most precussion insts. too. i play viola, precussion (marimba, piano, snare, timbale ect.), and clarinet 😃
I play more than two but I focus on trumpet (with flugelhorn) and violin

I like the video. I'm looking for things to help my children form good practice habits and schedules. I'm not sure what age you're aiming at audience wise. There is a bit much non musical for my 10 yr old son to be held captive by the video.
