My first car was a '67 Buick Special Deluxe with a little V8 300/ 2bbl. It was 12 years old when I bought it, ran like a dream, and it was that really beautiful Turquoise Mist in color. Even though it was a 4 door, I was still bitten by the "Buick bug". I've owned 58 cars since then, including several Buick Skylarks, from '66-'72s, and also worth mentioning a very mint '68 Malibu 327/300hp coupe from California in Teal, with light blue interior, that really turned heads, but I've always liked the Buicks the most. Currently I own a Red/ with black vinyl top and interior '69 GS 350. I have to agree with you that these cars help keep you young! Mine is so fast my wife is afraid to ride in it!! Thanks again for sharing the story of your ride with us, it's just one beautiful car!! Best wishes from George B in the Boston area!!

Those mid-60’s Buick performance vehicles, the Skylark GS and Buick Wildcat were SO underrated. Everyone from my generation wanted Pontiac GTO’s or Malibu SS’s or Olds Cutlass 442’s, but the Skylark GS with that 401 V8 was a real sleeper of a HOT car!
Meanwhile, I had to make do with my ‘67 Fairlane 6-cylinder (hand me down from my Dad!). But it got me to college and back and was the car I courted Mrs Rusty Steele in!
49 years later, we’re still together.

Had a 1965 Skylark with the same color scheme. Came with a three on the tree and a Wildcat 310. Replaced the Trans with A 4 speed Muncie and replaced the intake manifold with the 4 barrel off a Wildcat 355. Wish I still had it!

I had a 1965 Skylark. It wasn't anything like this one. It was a four door, 300 ci, ps, pb, air, electric seat. It had a 2 speed auto in it. That was the only thing that was bad about the car. Looking this over sure brought back memories. It also had the hub caps with the knock offs. The hub caps wouldn't stay on the car so bought chrome reverse with baby moons.

My first new car was a 1965 Skylark sport coupe ( 2 door hard top) that I bought in late 1964. 300 ci V8 with Borg Warner 4 speed manual trans, posi traction, dual exhaust and HD suspension. I couldn’t afford to feed the 401 V8. Had over 150,000 miles on it and it was stolen. Wish I still had it. The perfect car! The all came standard with 3 speed manual trans. The automatic and 4 speed were options.

This car is beautiful. I just LOVE those mid-sixtes cars! They have that great look of human-designed practicality with a touch of chrome from the fifties, and mixed with the sixties' idea of horsepower. I remember in the seventies people made disparaging remarks about the "boxy" look of the sixties cars... that has come full circle in my opinion, and they are beautiful.

I'm proud to say I own a 65 GS 401 nailhead. My father and I did a full frame off restore on her and he being a Buick mechanic. We brought her back up to showroom new with the addition of disk brakes. If you ever got one of these going you'll appreciate the added stopping power. The only thing I see missing is the Buick tri-shield on the hood.
And yes folks, she's driven. Of course when the weather is optimal.
The one thing I love is opening the hood and reaching under the intake.
Nobody expects that from a stock. But the nailhead was never conceived to be stock. Dennis I hope you got the rods and lifters sorted out. I didn't see, but do you have the triangular washer fluid refill bottle under the hood? I was amazed when I opened mine and it was still there!
Glad to see another GS owner who loves his as much as love mine. They are getting pretty rare so seeing another GS and yes, mines the factory red black top black interior. Made me smile! Big time!

But that's the only one I recall. My car was a Sleeper to others that I raced on the road. lol It had a lot of power. I did replace the t handle shifter to a 12" Hurst shifter. It also had stock mufflers on it which made it not so noticeable with it's power when driving. I wish I still had it now. Well, past is past is past-life goes on. Lou, I'm right with you in thinking this was a very nicely styled car. Another one you can really call "perfect" from any angle. '65 was a milestone year for American cars as far as body design. Every car from that year, especially GM, was pleasing and had a clean modern look to them. I like the dark all-business colors of this one. You sure don't see them at car shows these days. Damn!!!!!! My favorite car of all time. I never owned one to my dismay. Your maroon color is also my favorite for this car. I LOVE YOR CAR!!!! The aftermarket Vintage Air is probably even better than the factory air in that the fresh air vents work better on non-A/C cars.
I made a clone. I did a body off frame. In fact I got a convertible frame for my platform (because the GranSport used a convertible frame). And I built up the chassis and suspension as the body was resting on its original frame. So I restored the body and the chassis separately. Once they were done I lifted the body and placed it on the restored convertible chassis. I even had the dielectric heat seams on the back of the front seat backs reproduced. (many people ignore that detail). My Skylark had power windows and factory air. A convertible or a car without the "B" pillar (a true hardtop like the one in the video) deserves power windows! For my "clone" I built a 1971 Buick 455 because it was easier. A 401 needs special motor mount adaptors and a lot more work to supplant the stock 300 CID engine. The 455 is much more like a 300 than it is a 401. I just had to get different motor mount pads (shorter than the 300 motor mount pads) to drop the 455 in. And the accessories are also located in the same place. Easy-peasy. Also it is much easier to put in a Muncie 4 speed behind a 300, 350 or 455 than it is to locate the parts needed to put a 4 speed behind a nailhead. The 4 speed setup has a lot of unique parts behind a 401. I also upgraded mine to front disc brakes and I went with 15" Buick Road wheels instead of 14". I did get repro red 1965 Skylark center caps for those wheels so it would appear more stock. I did put in a GTO star patterned headliner though!

I always loved these 65 gran sport over the 67s , I had a friend with a 65 (in red over white) and another friend with a baby blue 67. I notice the 65s a lot of them rotted out in the rocker panels and floor boards. The common problem with the 67s w/ the 400 engine is when the engine reaches 150k the nylon teeth on the timing gears would break as my friend found out. This 65 in this video is a real pretty car, glad you posted it, it brought back some memories.

I used to have this model and year. I used to drag race it. I eventually replaced the engine with newer Buick engines, finally shoehorning in the 455ci. It is great to see one in the cherry condition of this car. This really brings back memories, my car looked exactly like this one only in bright red.
Nothing idles like a big block V-8.
You hear 345 HP and think, that's not much, but two things make it fast, the tremendous torque you get from the big block, and the light weight. The car weighs right around 3,300 pounds.
One thing he did not explain is that the motor is called "Wildcat 445" because it produces 445 ft-lbs of torque.
The 425 cu. in, version which is a bored-out version of the same motor was called the "Wildcat 465", again for the torque rating. He said his motor was bored out 0.030 inch to make it 425 cu. in, so he really has the larger motor because that is exactly how Buick made the 425.

It is aftermarket "Vintage Air" The compressor looks to be what the factory would have however. I had 3 1964 Skylarks (one was a convertible) and two 1965 Skylarks with factory air, so I know what factory air looks like on these Skylarks. There would be one vent above the radio, and one each at either end of the dash about midway up. The one over the radio is slot shaped and the ones at the ends of the dash are circular.

This was Buicks answer to the Pontiac GTO which came out in 64! Buick very wisely added something to all 65 Grand Sport Hardtops that Pontiac should have done to the GTO Hardtops and that is they added the ''Heavy duty'' frame which was simply the ''Boxed'' convertible frame! It added some weight to the car but it was a lot stronger, The 65 GTO with the 4 speed was known to tear the rear suspension mounts out of the frame sometimes so Pontiac added stiffeners to tie the mounting points together to prevent it! Back to the Grand Sport it is a really bad ass car! If it was mine I would be very tempted to add the dual Quads from the Riviera GS to it just for fun! It wouldn't be that noticeable with the air cleaner Buick used on them! Love the car! I love the 64 to 88 GM A and G body cars! I think that they are the best cars ever built!

Who knew the nail head was still around in 1965. Awesome looking car beautiful color! My friend had a beautiful Buick skylark in 1970. It was the first time I drink beer and I puked spaghetti all over the side of his beautiful yellow convertible.

66 too. The next gen Buick V-8 bowed for 67 as a 400, and 430. Soon the 350 also replaced the 340.
