@@johnriexinger6654 Hi John, I believe there is 5 thickness shims - normally after the head is rebuilt you use the one in the middle to start out with. The tool will then tell you to go one size higher or lower. On my head I have 16 shims which are all the middle one and I would have to look it up but I think that’s 5mm shims. The biggest wear I have is on the exhaust shims which measured all between 4.75 to 4.86 mm This tells me that my head was rebuilt about 125,000 to 150,000 miles ago. This was app around 2007 and done by Mercedes Benz of Los Angles. This also means I have to rebuild my head again in another 25,000 miles or so. The timing chain guides were replaced about 35,000 miles ago by the previous owner and so was the chain and tensioner. The chain and tensioner were Febi and both went out last year (2021) in the summer and I replaced both with MB parts - I will do the tensioner rails next when I correct my timing offset of 2 crank angle degrees with an offset woodruff key from MB
Hi John, looking good, MB has a tool to determine the correct thickness for the shims.
I keep my fingers crossed
I think I will have to buy it and looking at the price of the smaller shims, I hope I will not need to buy any.
