I havent seen this on any of the other guide replacement videos as you said. Why do you have to remove the sprockets if you do t have to replace them?. The upper guides appear to be accessible. This job is on my to do list for my 560sl
You have to remove them to get to the plastic guides. The dark red part. That's what will break over time. It gets caught in-between the chain and gear, messes the timing up and then BOOM! Completely over! This is an interference engine.
Actually, that "thing" in the middle of the camshaft is there exactly for holding the camshaft from turning (see Mercedes w126 factory repair procedure 05-220). There are two protruding "teeth" for that purpose, at 180 degrees from each other, to hold the camshaft in place Although I have the MB tool 116589010100, I prefer to use an adjustable wrench to hold the camshaft. You should try this method too, is more elegant. I would not recommend the method you used, and although you were able to take the bolt off this way, how will you torque the bolt back, at 100Nm, by stretching the chain??
I know I'm a novice but I HIGHLY doubt I'd be able to stretch out that chain with arm strength. I ride a fixed gear bike and put back pressure on the chain all the damn time and it takes a good amount of to to stretch. My legs are no where near the strength of an engine. But I do wish!!!

What is that rubber tube with the yellow end. Mine is very hard after 44 years and nearly 100 miles and probably should be replaced? Thanks!!!
