I have had surgery on my left hand and cannot pull the clutch in all of the time before my hand gives out. That's why some of us need the DCT! It's DCT or not riding.

I've owned a 2018 Goldwing Tour DCT for two years now and have ridden it over 17k miles. Best bike ever! I do low speed tight turns quite well, thank you. No, I can't feather the clutch, but I can apply slight throttle while modulating with the rear brake very well. But, you're right; it takes some practice initially, but the transition has been worth it. The DCT has seven forward gears (vs. six forward gears on the manual) and shifts in a tenth of a second. Plus, it has engine assisted walking reverse and walking forward. The manual shift model only has electric motor assisted reverse. There are paddles to manually gear down or gear up while riding. Or, you can put the DCT into Manual mode and only use the paddles, or you can install the optional toe shifter. The DCT is always in the right gear and at that gears peak power delivery. Three times I've been challenged at a traffic light by a big, shiny Harley and three times I smoked the challenger. The big difference between us is that the Harley loses a lot of time manually changing gears whereas I enjoy the peak of every gear and practically instantaneous changes between them. Put the bike into Sport mode and hang on! It's exhilarating. Finally, the DCT is NOT an automatic! It's an automatically shifted manual transmission. The DCT has two dry clutches handing off to each other as needed. One shifts the odd-numbered gears and the other shifts the even-numbered gears. An automatic uses a single clutch and a lossy-until-lockup torque converter. The new Goldwing is a mechanical marvel with a flat-six mounted low for incredible balance and ease of handling. This from a guy who went through both Harleys and Indians. I'm an egg-sucking dog now because I'll never go back to a calf-burning V-Twin.

Lol You sure know your DCT Goldwing. I don't own the Goldwing but I did sell my Harley because of health reasons and age. I bought a Honda 2024 NC750xDCT and love the darn thing. It has allowed me to keep riding. What a easy joy to ride.

I have a DCT on my Honda because I have sever arthritis in my left hand, and have a terrible time working a clutch. The DCT is a dream in heavy traffic, and on city streets. One of my friends is an MSF instructor and I never thought I would see him on a bike with an “Automatic” transmission. After he got his new GW, I asked him about low speed and long, and he said something that you would certainly agree with... practice, practice, practice. He can take that big GW through the cones on the MSF course like most people do with a 250 Rebel. On low speed maneuvers you have to learn how to use the throttle, and (sometimes) drag the rear brake. Don’t forget that you have a MT/AT lever that puts you in manual mode, if you want to shift your self, and you can use the paddles in “D” just as well as in MT mode.

Good, honest review. I've been a fan for years and years and took your class from the GA franchise numerous years ago.
I'm a '14 owner here ...audio/nav/XM model - only wish it had the ABS. I rode a 2018 when they first came out, and yeah they're sportier with finally a 6th gear, traction control, and the electric windscreen, I'm sticking with my gen 2 model. It's got plenty of power and handles much better than what you'd expect from a 900+ lb. beast of a motorcycle. I'm missing Traxxion Dynamics suspension and some Helibars, but then it'll become the perfect motorcycle.
Goldwings are known to be bullet proof and completely reliable bikes, which is why I bought mine, routinely getting 300,000+ miles.

In Australia the Police driver / rider academy uses Police officers that have had Road Racing experience. From there they are seniors and they train the trainers. No problem. They live on a motorcycle and they gain experience far beyond those who do not live on a motorcycle. They are the top motorcycle riders.

Thanks you Sir, and blessing to your family.

I've said many times I ride a Harley because 95% of my clientele ride Harley's and want to see the techniques and exercises performed on Harleys. I've owned 3 Gold Wings thru the years as well as several other Honda's, Suzuki's Yamaha's and Triumphs. If 95% of my customers rode Wings, I'd be riding one right now. I like all types and makes of motorcycles. If I had the room and the money, I'd have 20 or 30 different bikes in my garage. And I know you weren't commenting in a negative manner. I just want people to know why I own a Harley. I love just about all two wheeled machines.

Always enjoy you expertise and your humor(unlike some)-after 50 years of riding and many bikes thanks in part to you(and more so my wife) finally got my 1st Harley. 2018 Softail Lowrider-never a Harley guy before but they made all the right changes in this bike that now it's a hell of a lot of fun to ride. For me though the ultimate touring bike is my 2014 BMW R1200RT. It has basically all the tech of the Goldwing. just as comfortable as the Harley tourers, handles better than both and only weighs 620+ lbs. I appreciate all the testing you do of other makes, and very objectively so. When you get a chance ride the new R1250RT-much different than the 1250R. It might really open your eyes(plus it feels like a big. comfortable sport bike with plenty of power-100mph all day long if you're so inclined). Some day I want to take your course-do you have any locations in AZ?

Whilst the mechanic had it apart, I asked him to have a good look to see if there were any other issues.

Coming way late to the party.... I own a 2023 Goldwing F6B and it comes with the DCT. On my first couple of rides on it, I did miss using a clutch. Now I have gotten used to it. The one area that I think the DCT is superior to a manual clutch is a scenario where you have to hit your brakes hard and slow down very quickly, but not stop. With the DCT, the bike automatically downshifts, so when release your brakes, you are in the proper gear for whatever speed you are now going. Great Review!

The dead key start is nice. I am the owner of a 2012 BMW R1200GS. Recently I went to ride and the bike would not start. I called the dealer and he told me with code it was throwing it was most likely the watch type in the anti-theft/alarm system.( while an other shop in Connecticut did a full service five years ago said nothing about the battery the is a yellow light that comes on atleast a week or more before it says there is an alarm battery code so I am mostly to blame.) He told me to Google it. The unit is under the rear seat you have to take the seat off that is easy, then you take the rear racks off and a bunch of sheet metal again not hard but there are bunch of washers and spacers of different sizes and then you see the alarm box in which the battery is in. The bike was parked in grass a boat a foot high. 50 years ago I would have done it but know if I dropped a spacer you may have to buy them all. If is not the battery it is the ring around the ignition switch which is antenna, I am sure it is not that or they would have called me since they are bring back the bike
tomorrow. Before I sent uthe bike up I checked all the forms for a workķuwill pick up the bike and bring it back for $85.00 round trip 220 miles three months ago it was 70.00,while it is there I am having other work done. Do to health reasons, the bike only has 9000 miles I have bought 4-6 new 1200gs from Max BMW. Latest year they changed the petcock under a recalled, they told me if was not a recall it would have been 1300 bucks. The first BMW I bought at 17 paid 800 from a small dealer the clock said 17000 miles in Tennessee I burned a valve after working on the dealer he said how many miles I said 17000 , he try 170000 miles. I found out boxers can go around 150k-200k before a rebuild. I am keeping this one as it is the last year the gs was air cooled, only 2 years in a row were they done in triple black the other year I believe was 2013. It has some wheels electronic suspension the only option other than bags are tire pressure monitors I have the lower seat. Like you I still not flat foot it. I had one with a lowered frame but didn't put thought into geometry and it handled awfully. If I buy an additional bike it will British from the 60-70s probably a Norton 850. When I had the BMW I bought as kid I pulled one head I was going to port and polish it was done at the factory, all the welding was done by hand and the were all perfect dimes much better than the new robot welding an other bike I would consider is a Rokon 4 stoke a project bike. I told the dealer I would like to buy a service manual, he said they no longer make them. I have to buy a Hayes through Amazon .

It in reality is an electronically actuated dual clutch manual transmission, much more precise and direct transition of power over the old “slush boxes” it’s not needed and it removes the mechanical rider involvement (other than the button pushes in manual mode) and that’s what motorcycling is about in my opinion.

I preferred the Manual version after test riding both variants.......until I actually bit the bullet and bought a used DCT on a great deal and on the strength of being able to fit a foot shifter similar to the BMW's. I have not missed a clutch one iota and never felt the need to fit a shifter. Believe me after riding for nearly 50 years having a manual gearbox and clutch is most definately NOT what motorcycling is about, in my opinion

The most annoying thing with my 2011 Concours is the keyless start. I need a key for the gas cap and the luggage. The switch is actually a key that comes out if it is turned clockwise from the on position. When the battery goes dead, I just have to put the dead fob next to what would be the key switch on a regular bike and it will start. No codes and secret key holes.

That was a fantastic video, loved the scenery! The bike was maybe nice but I will stick to my SGS. The comedy KEY routine was hilarious. Josh really was serious? If you loose the fob you are Screeweed! I fail to see how this will go for the unfortunate Wing owner... Personally, give me a regular key and maybe a pin-pad to input a security code if I'm so concerned about theft. I think it's more likely I will screw up with a chip key (losing, forgetting, damaging) than a thief going for this bike. Also, this electronic complexity occasionally bites. There was my wife's car and a BMW sport touring bike both of which lost their throttle function. I had to drive her vehicle to the nearest garage at idle speed and then pay nearly a grand (past warrenty) to replace a failed computing part.

Good for some, not good for others,
