I remember that drive. When my husband was stationed in Augusta, GA, we'd take I-77 to go back to Ohio to visit family. Very beautiful drive, but steep! Love your videos ❤
Beautiful scenery indeed. A dangerous one for inexperienced drivers. I love going down after a snowstorm. The snow covered mountains is a beauty. Thanks for supporting my channel!
Great job on your explanation and and demonstration video for auto drivers and also some newer and older as well truck drivers. The truck does the job if you understand the concepts and fundamentals if you stay in control. 🙏💯👍💪🤜👊🤛💪👍💯🙏
I just passed my class 1 (in the uk) after years driving only class 2 and your videos like this encourage me to move up to bigger trucks. I currently move large plant and would like to eventually move into heavy haulage. Stay safe out there 👊
Thank you for all the effort you put on this videos man, I'm a local driver but I basically don't deal with mountains like that, I've only done it once I was using 8 gear to come down that mountain, I felt bad at the beginning seeing other semis passing me by and I thought I was way to slow then I realized some of the guys who passed me was on the side of the road smoking his breaks, nothing happened to him. Thank you man again, God bless you friend
Nice job going down that grade, retired heavy hauler here, appreciate the way you handled your rig on the way down. Hope the guys that passed you were empty!👍👍
Dammmmnnn listen to to Jake, love it! Haven't been as far as fancy gap in a while. Race to the bottom might get you there quicker than intended. 😂 I remember asking mom what those hills of sand and stuff were for at 5-6 years old and she told me. That point on I understood how dangerous it could be and the respect has only gone up since. Gotta lot of catching up to do on your videos. Ty sir for sharing and as always highly appreciated 👍🤞
i know nothing about trucking, but growing up i’d always hear those jake brakes from the highway, it’d lull me to sleep, never realized what they actually were til i started watching you, keep climbing boss man, sendin that love ☀️
Great video. The way you explain it is awesome. I been driving for 3yrs now hasn't been easy. I used to drive from CA to Nevada loaded 78,000lbs. Down 6-7% talk about scary being new driver but like you said be in right gear go slow. I always told my co workers I let the Jake take me home. They always laughed. Lol. Good stuff fam keep doing your thing. Be safe.
Fancy Gap is beautiful. Not beautiful when I got 42k of paper rolls in the wagon and I gotta go up the grade. 😅. Coming back down I just hit the jakes on stage 3 and just let it eat. I keep it usually around 45 and I don't even have to touch the brakes. Another beast of a grade is I64 coming through the Ne0w River Gorge. Thats a monster. 7 to 8% grade on that beast. Great video brother 🙏🏿

I love the way you explain how and what to do in situations like going down a mountain, my father had his own truck otr for around 40 yes and I drove for 26 yes, I have been around trucks all my life, you are a great driver and a teacher, be safe and careful out there, mike from Mississippi.
Hello there. I’ve been backed up on editing. I have one more coming your way tomorrow. Then 2 more in the coming days. I was 4 videos behind on editing.
This might sound weird, but your truck sounds awesome!! Gave me chills, turned up the bass and blasted it!! I drive a truck thatt has a muffler on it, very jealous!!! Keep up the good work!
I drove down the Grapevine grade in CA and my back brakes were smoking some by the end. Box truck with automatic transmission and no jake or engine brake... it would upshift on its own due to high rpm. Then brakes would be needed each cycle to get it back down shifted. Fully loaded 26K lb gross box truck with 14K lb trailer but the trailer brakes weren't working. Got the brake controller on after that... which is tricky on a modern electrical system that had no output for one. My Coach RV has an engine brake and that works great. I would like to retrofit the box truck with a jake brake but maybe not very practical. 2014 Navistar DT466 7.6L
Manual is the way to go. Gear down in that manual truck and never have to touch the brakes once. I owned a couple of manual (6 speed) box trucks prior to owing semi trucks.
My grandpa was a trucker in the 40s and 50s. I remember his stories through the Grapevine. He turned on the heater to help the engine, when it was 110+ in the summer. I have huge respect for truckers. The Jake brake always brings a smile to my face.
@@presy_jay ..Smoked my brakes😄, it's a blessing it wasn't worse but I stood up on them brakes till I stopped. Like and a comment from a Russian TH-camr! If you don’t mind me, asking you, what kind of a microphone or an app are you using to run three cameras? Thanks in advance.
I'm using the audio from the POV camera on my head. No mic. Just the built in mic from my DJI action 4. All three cameras are recording at the same time (simultaneously). I added the b-roll footage from the other cameras. Match up the videos, then mute the audio from the b-roll camera. Hopefully, this helps.
Not smart driver. If you encounter stopped traffic halfway down, it's doomsday for a lot of people involved. Ain't no stopping the truck at 75 mph. Regardless of the grade, I approach every mountain with that same concept in mind.
Maryland 68, Oregon’s/NORCAL 5 , and CO have some Knarley grades. I’m brand new and just took a dedicated route. Automatic truck. SD CAL TO Bakersfield CA daily. Only hard part is Tejon pass area but it’s not a long stretch. Kind of nervous for it. I got CDL in Ohio and mountain driving wasn’t covered much other than in class
10-4 driver, I'd ride the jakes hard all the way down sloooooow and then pass the steering wheel holders on the flats/going up hills and we'll see who gets to the destination safe and on time 😂
That kinda works when you drive a truck with no power. That could get you in trouble if you drive a powerful truck (like mine). With this same weight in my trailer, I can go up fancy gap without dropping a gear. I wouldn't go down 1 gear lower with that same weight. A truck with no power would be crawling up the mountain. Hence, the reason why that theory works when you drive a truck that lacks power.
@@presy_jay gotcha would you suggest a 10 speed or 13 for first purchase already a OTR driver buying my first unit later this year . No auto restriction

@yeremy7144 The point of the video wasn't how steep the grade is, brother. But, showing how to safely descend down it. A lot of rookie drivers watch my videos. BTW, I've been down a 17% grade. The concept is the same.
Most certainly! I would recommend doing so prior to starting your descend down the mountain. Unless you're an experienced driver, a lot can go wrong while downshifting downhill. I wouldn't recommend it.
If a driver has issue with fancy gap they don’t need a cdl. It’s the easiest to come down with a speed set for car/trucks that is the same. 😂 it’s like 65 all the way down. I want to see some real mountain driving.
I disagree with your statement. Fancy Gap Mountain is underrated. People start flying down, not realizing it's 7 miles down. It is a variable speed mountain. I see guys doing 80 mph down Fancy Gap all the time. That is just plain stupidity. What if there's stopped traffic halfway down? That's a lot of 💀 people. One day, it's 65 mph. The next day, it's 25 mph with zero visibility from the fog. Have you ever driven down fancy gap while it's snowing at night? I have! I driven down a 17% grade before. But you know what? I treat all grades with the same respect! Secondly, you have to remember that there are rookie drivers out there. That is precisely why I did this video. Everyone doesn't become an expert driver overnight. It takes experience to get here.

Did you do any modifications to your engine brakes to be able to withstand the weight going down …
No. Changed the solenoids about 3 years ago. If the grade was steeper, I'd go down about 2-3 gears lower.
@@presy_jay so a engine break is a solenoid? If so geesh & who do all your work I have a 95 FLD flattop
@mauricedaniel2500 not what I'm saying. If the solenoids are bad, it reduces the stopping power.

When you're going down a steep grade, and have your Jake on, do u have to turn them off to use the foot Brake ?
Not at all. They work together at the same time. The throttle or clutch will disengage the jake brake.
What are you shift rpm’s in tnat cat are you around 1500-1700rpm upshifting ?
Upshifting around 1700. Downshifting around 1400-1500. I really don't pay attention to the rpm. I just listen to the motor.
