I made a fortune in 12th grade by fixing Xbox 360s with Red ring of death...I bought some flux and a hot air station to reflow chips and I probably fixed a 100 of them for $40 each! I had no idea what I was really doing, my uncle showed my how to do it and I just copied what he did, but it worked!
Nobody outside of the states wants xbox anyway. It's always been that way. Not in Europe, much less in Asia. For Asia, xbox is something that doesn't exist.
Mattrick was half of the problem, Balmer was the other. Several of my past clients worked in various departments in Redmond with a couple who worked in Xbox. I was told by a few about Balmer's management review system that doomed the XB1. Let's say you managed the UI team for Xbox, and when it's time for performance reviews, you're REQUIRED to have employees in Great, Fair, and Poor categories. Even if everyone on your team are amazing. Imagine how everyone behaved when they were made aware of that. Teamwork? Out the fucking window! Throwing each other under the bus to save their own jobs? Yep! Sabotage others to save your own job? Yep! Now you know why the XB1 was a pile of shit that never worked properly and was massively out performed by the PS4.
Is that real? The management system I mean. Because if it is real, then that is very messed up. Also it is insane that guy didn't thought his system will create chaos. Absolute moron, then again alot of management in many sector aren't exactly the brightest
Yeah. Famous bell curve of workers reviews. Absolute worst thing to do, bcs you will in the end kick out even good employees, just bcs they are worse than best, instead of kicking bad vs keeping good employees.
That Bell curve review process was popularized by Jack Welch of GE is still used today in large corps. Nothing unique about Ballmer employing it at Xbox.
Also remember the Kinect stuff with the Xbox one being required was shortly after the Edward Snowden stuff had come out the month prior to e3. Having a forced camera in your house definitely gave me the creeps. Went with ps4.
Thats something many people overlook or fail to mention. It wasn't necessarily that people hated Kinect or the idea of Kinect , but the timing and it being connected to a always online console and Microsofts history of working with the feds at creating backdoor access.... yeah it was destined to drag any console down that it was tethered to.
Remember when you could make your gamertag "Xbox Sign Out" and then when someone said it in your lobby the forced Kinect would sign you out and disconnect you? Good times!
Blaming it all on don mattrick is no different than people blaming Obama all these years later. Phil Spencer has had the reigns for around a decade and Xbox has barely improved
Very true lmao. Bros had more than enough time, if he immediately turned things around we'd be a few big AAA releases deep from Xbox instead of the nonsense latelt
All the blame goes to him because he was the one who almost cratered the brand and who damaged it to the point that it had to change tactics to stay alive. He rightfully gets the blame. It doesn't matter how much time passes the actions of ceo's, Presidents, decision makers etc. can last and typically do last for decades after they leave. That doesn't mean to excuse current heads of Xbox bad decisions or not being able to turn things around but the breaking of momentum, good will and overall destroying of good management has had a lasting effect on the Xbox brand, a brand that would be in a far better position now if Don Mattrick hadn't been in charge or making the decisions he made.
To be fair, Don essentially dug Xbox into a fissure-deep hole, to which Phil had to claw up from. I'm not defending Phil in the slightest, but it really begs to question on if Phil could have made Xbox better if he wasn't handed it is such a state. Phil is not blameless either, 10 years of being the CEO of a company should mean something. You've had control over Xbox for literally a decade now, and you should have improvements as a bare minimum during your tenure.
That's A perfect analogy of what's happening. Don killed Xbox and Phil restored it just not what it use to be which isn't Phil's fault imo. I'm an Xbox gamer with both Series X and S because of my digital library I'm with Xbox in long run but I've been thinking about PlayStation
@@gabrieljohnson1854 bruh just go pc. consoles arent worth it anymore. get a pc and play all the games from the past using emulators and play games with mods and you get all to enjoy all games from both platforms! you also dont have to pay for multiplayer. build an expensive rig and itll last you for years!
The cancer could still have been treated in 2013. They could have turned everything around by 2015-2016 with the right decisions. Spencer wants us all in the cloud.
People give Spencer too much leeway. He's been failing for a decade. A decade should be more than enough to right course. Instead they force studios to make games for game pass to their own detriment. People like Asmongold like to pretend that just because it's a trillion dollar company they couldn't be run by absolute donkeys. They are. Xbox has not been doing well because the leadership is retarded.
Because of the Halo name, not 343, and they both fell off a cliff. People bought the original Xbox to play Halo, now they're selling their Xbox because of Halo.@@Tempelers
I simply will never understand Microsoft's reasoning behind the XB1 at all. They had a successful formula with the 360, it worked. Well for the first 3-4 years of the 360 and then they were not happy that Nintendo was destroying them in sales and they saw this new demographic of traditionally non gamers coming in with the Wii in BIG numbers and they just HAD to compete but they did it in most bizarre way possible with Kinect. At least Sony basically just copied the Wii with the dildo wands but focused on what mattered most, beating Microsoft at the gaining the core audience back, you know the ones who will stick around and buy your next console, and your next, and the games too. Unlike non gamers who basically dropped the Wii and gaming in general once they got bored and they all went back to playing Facebook and mobile games. Also, the mention that XB1 was hard to develop for is totally wrong. This was the generation where they went full blown PC in a box with x86 architecture APUs/SoC's. XB1's biggest failing in hardware was the fact that they used standard DDR3 RAM as opposed to GDDR3 which the PS4 used which gave the PS4 a huge latency and bandwidth benefit. Then you have their GPU, which was said to be around the HD7770 range in terms of PC GPU's, which was insanely weak by 2014, these had released in 2011. The PS4 had around a HD7870, which too was old tech by this point but it had enough CU's and shader cores to push for 1080p games whereas the XB1 had to settle for mostly 720p/900p games upscaled. This all doesn't mean it was hard to develop for, Microsoft relied on ESRAM inside the APU, like they did with the 360, only tech and game engines had come a long way and much preferred direct access to large pools of memory/ This cut down on latency whereas the XB1 had to move data around much more often than the PS4 did and moving data around is expensive, time consuming, and inefficient. So not only was the console weaker, it had a poor design, a requirement for kinect and online, no trading or sharing/borrowing games, a poor lineup of games, more focus on TV then games, AND it was MORE EXPENSIVE!! They basically handed Sony this generation. Don Mattrick will forever be remembered as a terrible CEO/head of Xbox. The decisions made during this time, although not all came from him, will forever taint the name Xbox. He was the one in charge, he had the final say in ideas, plans, and strategy. He failed, and now Xbox is clinging on for dear life with only Game Pass as their saving grace and even that is struggling.
16:21 I'd argue the Wii U did have a fairly clever idea in that it turned you TV into a giant DS. The Wii U suffered from poor marketing that didn't make it clear to consumers that it was a whole new console and not just an upgraded Wii.
24:20 I don't know why people still pretend that Microsoft is competition, it IS just Sony and Nintendo, Microsoft is as much competition as SEGA is, I even bet that Microsoft wants their Gamepass on Playstation!
Hearing about the Xbox 360 makes me reminisce about the good ol’ days when I was just a kid and my older brother would hog the Xbox almost the entire time. But those times when we played split screen Borderlands 2, Army of Two, CoD, Minecraft, etc., those are the best gaming memories I have.
As much as this hurt Xbox even to this day I also feel its had a negative effect on PlayStation. PlayStation has always been at its peak when competing. No need to try now.

@@captaindestruction9332 "the US/North America is the most important market or has been since gaming became mainstream." It's the biggest market for sure, but it isn't be all end all. PS3 outsold the 360 in the end because the 360 did worse than the PS3 outside of the US. "they didnt do awful in Europe or worldwide." The 360 generation was the only time the Xbox brand did okay outside of the US. And even then, most of the 360's sales was in the US. For context, the 360 outsold the Wii and the PS4 in the US. Until the Switch, it was the second or third highest console of all time in the US. "Fact is is Sony had the entire world market outside of the biggest market and still lost the PS3/360 gen on multiple fronts not just Sales wise. " PS3 beat the 360 in sales. Where the PS3 flopped was that it lost a lot of money because of a lot of early mistakes Sony made in that generation. "Point still stands that PlayStation had to actually try when Xbox 360" Yes and no. Sony was its own worst enemy in that generation. It also completely lost Japan to Nintendo. "Microsoft did convert PlayStation fans and would have grown their market share" That was actually split between the 360 and the Wii. Or to say, the 360 took Sony's hardcore fans while Nintendo took their casual fanbase. "hey would have kept the most important" In terms of games, the most important market is actually Japan since the vast majority of SE, Capcom, Namco, and others' money comes from the JP market, not UI. One of the biggest blows to Sony was losing Dragon Quest to the DS.
It is interesting that in this Video Luke mentions that despite consumer unfriendly decisions like games pricing, we still buy Nintendo games. When later on he talks about games pricing for PS5 and how the games industry constantly raises the prices to absurd values (Ubisoft etc.). Imo Nintendos pricing is way more transparent and consumer friendly compared to the rest of the gaming industry. There aren't three to four differnt versions of the newest Mario or Zelda game each having its own price varying between 70 and 140 Euros. I usually pay 50-60€ for a physical copy of a Nintendo when it's released.
@@timmyboy99 You have no idea how a business works. Using your logic why did Microsoft have such big layoffs? It's 0.000001% of their money! Why did they sell Tango? Also hand anyone else 100b and they'll be in an extremely advantageous position, Phil is the only person that can blow through 100b and be selling LESS consoles than before lmao.
When our Xbox red ringed we wrapped it in a towel and forced it to overheat for awhile. We successfully melted the motherboard back into submission as teenagers and the Xbox ran again fine for years lol
That Nintendo TH-cam program has not been around since 2018 (when they required you to sign up it was not worth covering Nintendo stuff). You can make anything on Nintendo now.
It was not Don Mattrick, the drying up of excellent AAA exclusives was the death of xbox. Look at ps3, the worst launch saved by releasing amazing AAA exclusives.
Don Mattrick was truly awful but current Xbox leadership have had a decade. I don’t care if you like Phil Spencer or that he is a gamer ... he’s terrible. Matt Booty should be nowhere near leadership either.
you need to consider the era. sure phil is pretty bad, but here you have zelnick, guillemot, whoever are leading ea, wb, square... even the jim ryan. game industry is full of get rich quick schemers and among them phil is one of the more sympathetic ones. look at rockstar, look at rocksteady, look at blizzard, look at konami, look at netherrealms, lookat bungie, look at bioware, look at any ea studio, look at damn near anyone. capcom kinda had a redemption arc as did cdproject red for now but how long does it last. and sony is doing the same exact thing mentioned in this video, thinking that because they released the last of us and god of war now they have the chops to make concord, last of us online etc. and yea sympathetic isnt enough to make me buy any of their stuff. but at least i dont vomit in my mouth as soon as i see him on stage
I had a ring of death. Xbox sent me a box and fixed it. In regards with entertainment; It was the longest two weeks of waiting I ever had to endure in my life
Baby Phil and crew finished it off. They're to blame not the people before. They had plenty of opportunities to right the ship but their greedy, egotistical and arrogant. That's the current people in charge, not the former.
@@jcflores1774 Sorry but it's self explanatory. Just read the history of the demise. Read some of the case files, listen to the lies. There's evidence everywhere.
The "More people were watching tv than playing games" was probably 100% because since they already had the xbox, why not use it for tv. Rather than, oh i got the xbox for tv.
About the red ring of death amount, for me, I had between 5 to 8 red ring of death consoles. Because, when we shipped it back to the factory, they would send us another one 2-3 weeks later, and it would instantly have a red ring. Pretty sure they sent broken ones back consistently. I would say, 2-3 of those consoles, worked for a bit before the red ring showed up. Many times it came to my door, either the one I shipped that just kept being sent back, or we were being sent other disfunction consoles.
It's impressive the success the 360 had despite the red ring issue. It was the cool console to own that era. My brother gifted me his og model when he got the halo elite 360, and we both were lucky not to encounter the red ring.
@@DragoonARC i hate to say this but it seems like it came down to who had better games i mean think about it Playstation 2 was the hottest 🔥 console in history but xbox 360 still cut into Playstations next console the ps3 do you know hard it is to do that anyways the thing that's killing xbox right now is the same thing that's been bugging xbox since the end of xbox 360 cycle going into xbox one lifespan and that's not having great exclusives and some of it is not Phil's fault like bungie not wanting to work on halo anymore
The red ring of death was crazy and most manufacturers probably wouldn't have survived that without M$ money. M$ rushed the 360 out so it could launch a year before the PS3 and honestly I think they were happy with the results despite the red ring of death issue. It's also interesting to see Xbox shift to Nintendo instead of Sony when the PS3 caught legs and really chased them down.
Had 3-4 red rings , my Lil brother had one ps3 during the whole time , once he showed me the web on the ps3 I was sold and never went back to Xbox and never will
Have you seen the Power On documentary? It's obvious Mattrick destroyed Xbox's reputation, but the idea behind the console made so much business sense... the issue was and always will be the most atrocious reveal in the history of technology in the Xbox One. All that entertainment stuff, TV stuff, integration, etc etc. None of those ideas killed Xbox, FOCUSING on it killed Xbox. Had they presented a GAMING machine with the same exact console, and sold Kinect separately, it would have continued the 360s upwards trajectory. The damage was so bad that it has stuck around to this day. Dang shame.
The beginning of the end for me, 2012 hook up a cable box. I was like, uh I cut the cord in 2011 for Netflix and Internet only. Well time for a new PC, Valve seems to be popping off. And now we're here.
I think they have dug themselves a hole with gamepass because with all of there games releasing day one on gamepass it makes it where nobody buys there games anymore instead they will just subscribe to gamepass but they have ran into a problem where they have run out of people who will subscribe to gamepass and now there subscribers are not growing anymore. I dont think gamepass is proftable with there current numbers and they are searching elsewhere to make more money.
It was largely Don, but it was also Steve Balmer and all of the orher executive at Xbox at the time. Including Phil Spencer which he himself admitred he was in the board room meeting when discussing the Xbox One. He didnt like the name, he didn't like the pricing as one of the big reason the 360 was successful was because it was the cheaper console, and even when he abnounced the price on stage and everyone booed, you could see him visibly kinda go "yeah I saw that coming" The fact of the matter is that Phil's job was to turn the Xbox brand image around and put itnin a place where Microsoft doesnt sell it off. For all intents and purposes he did do that. In 10 years, Xbox went from near divestature, to now being Microsoft's 3rd largest subsidiary. Xbox went from four or five first party studios to about 30 or so? Xbox went from about 50 million users via console alone to now over 500 million users across all of their games. Even Phil said they have more Xbox console users now than they ever have in their history, meaning that between all active Xbox One, and Xbox series consoles, they have over 83 million total active consoles at least. And also Xbox has become industry leaders in innovating game access with Xbox Game Pass(even though they need to get their non ultimate tiers sorted better and add more games on PC Game Pass) and they've been at least appearing to be the primary advancer for Cloud gaming between overall cloud gaming market share and the most streaming time and amidst all that, Xbox is financially the worlds biggest video game publish3r and thats thanks mostly to ABK, but its strategic. The Kumbaya era Phil that kind also atteibuted to Xbox One shortcomings with the lack of third party game deals being near non existent compared to Playst and Nintendo's thied party exclusive offerings timed or otherwise, left. They do it all theough Game Pass now which is an excellent vehicle in adding sort of "premiere" third party content day and date that keeps people subscribed in between first party releases. Im not here saying Xbox has done everything fans wanted in the last 10 years. But to say Phil hasnt done a lot is, IMO, grossly inaccurate and the Xbox team right now is in position to simply cater to their core audience of Xbox console and PC gamers, whilst still providing access to casual gamer audience via alternative means such as cloud and multiplatform games, which they have plenty of.
48:05 only thing i don't agree at all, the only difference from the X to the S is the GPU and guess what, most game's minimum requirements on PC are below the Series S in performance. Low end PCs are holding back the generations more than the Series S.
To be honest, it's extremely lame to still be blaming Don Mattrick ten years after he left. Did people forget that Nintendo launched the Wii U that flopped even harder than the Xbox One and they were the butt end of every joke for about six years? People called for Iwata's head even when he and the other CEOs took a hair cut and they only lay off after he died. Yet, Nintendo bounced back stronger than ever with the Switch, during the era where people were building their digital libraries. It's easy to forget, the Switch launched in 2017, which is a full 3-4 years after the PS4 domination. At some port, the current leadership needs to be blamed. For example, the Series is currently trailing behind the Xbox One. Who's fault is that? It should also be noted, Phil was there when the Xbox One happened. He wasn't some new blood. 51:40, while this is true, another big issue is that they don't market outside of the US. Even in the UK which is their second strongest market, but they barely promote their games and GP might as well not exist. But overall, the Xbox brand has a tone of issue because even in their strongest market, it's losing to the Switch. An aging system that is over seven years old.
It's not lame when we haven't recovered from Don's mistakes or are back to being number one because before Don was ceo Xbox was outselling PlayStation 2 to 1! did you know that Microsoft initially hired Phil Spencer to shut down Xbox but Phil instead created Game Pass and showed Microsoft it's worth keeping. We may never fully recover from Don Matrick

It's not that they forgot why people wanted Xbox it's that MS has always been monopolistic and truly believed they had the market position to become the "One" system. Microsoft's MO is "Embrace, Extend, Extinguish". Embrace, extend, and extinguish is Microsoft's strategy for entering product categories involving widely used standards, extending those standards with proprietary capabilities, and then using those differences to disadvantage its competitors. That was their entire plan and it backfired spectacularly because their market position was not even half as strong as they believed.
I’m a PlayStation die hard through and through, but even I had to say the 360 won most of the that console generation until the very end. Now it’s a shame because I think Xboxes downfall actually led to the crappy live service track PlayStation tried to do.
The streamer in that example who can spend like $9,000 without thinking about it thought they were flexing, but they werr actually telling everyone why they'll be broke later.
RROD, it was nearly a 100% failure rate. I had a PS3 but everyone i knew back then had a 360 that got the RROD. It's even referenced a few minutes into Bulletstorm. It was part of the gaming zeitgeist. PS3/Wii/360 gen was a freaking riot. Best console war period of all time. Such a fun time to be a gamer.
So you can get fired and get paid millions in severance for it and cover it up as stepping down? And then while you’re getting fired you can pick who takes your place personally? Imagine if we could do that with our jobs
Despite being in different ages, the principle remains the same Studios will pay the moment they play with our pockets, no studio is untouchable when it comes to our own money
Difficultly for Xbox with the series s at this point is it sells at a 3:1 ratio to the x. It is a pro for the consumer as it’s as cheap as £190 in the UK on sale. It is a pro for Xbox as it locks the consumer into paying for gamepass or buying games outright in their marketplace as opposed to a third party retailer. For Xbox to abandon the line for the ‘good of gaming’ based on hypothetical possibilities will be an afterthought for most decision makers at Xbox I think. The move the cloud gaming via Amazon fire stick would suggest they have no plans of ditching that lower point of entry either.
Phil Spencer destroyed Xbox more than Mattrick ever did. Spencer never truly recovered from what Mattrick did and only deepened Xbox's problems. Not only that, Phil Spencer lied, and lied, and lied, and lied, and lied. Yet unlike Mattrick, Spencer somehow still has his job.
The red ring issue with the 360 was mostly forgiven cause it was a golden era of games. Amazing game after amazing game. If a similar red ring issue were to happen to today’s console generation there would be massive pushback.
My PS5 had a problem with power supply and had to go get serviced. When a new one got sent back it had a major software issue (couldn't start some games at all). So yeah, I was on my 3rd PS5 half a year after it launched
Don Matrick saw what sony did it with the PS3 at the start "people will get 2 jobs to buy a PS3", and really thought that it would be different for him.
What baffles me is that Halo on XboxXS is so poorly done, I mean its a first party studio, and they know when the XboxXS is going to launch and yet they spend so much time and came up with a POS at launch.

I'm tired of this cult of personality surrounding Phil Spencer. Spencer is objectively worse than Mattrick. Spencer's message for the past ten years has been, " You don't need an Xbox to play Xbox games." He pushed the entire brand onto an unsustainable subscription service and Xbox has no choice but to go third party. Matrick hurt Xbox, but Spencer buried it.
It’s actually the head of Microsoft who is doing it. Phil doesn’t have a choice, every “decision” he makes isn’t his. You don’t know what you’re talking about
@DevicCypher There's the Cult I referring to. Do you understand that Nadella is just doing what Spencer was doing this entire time? Xbox can and him taking the risk of launching exclusive to Pc was biggest move.. He understood that console sales won't sustain the development cost... PS is doing same thing now... PS is following everything xbox did even though their console sales are high, but why? As a kid I thought the xbox one was kinda cool, some of the games I've played got bigger and the graphics got better, I basically used the xbox as a more powerful 360. Now as an adult and hearing about how much a flop that console was, I can't say I'm surprised. And now I use the series s as a slightly more powerful xbox one and even more powerful 360. The more I think about it, the majority of my games are from the 360 era with a handful from the one. I would say the biggest reason why you want to upgrade from the previous consoles is for the SSD speeds. The graphics and performance is largely the same as the one. But with the SSD, you can have faster load times. And quick resume is pretty cool, I don't remember if it was on the one or not. You can be in a game in seconds. Other than that, you can hold on to your older consoles.

They use kinect in Hospitals for patients to get better
don't forget phil spencer
Funny thing is that Microsoft did in fact use it to record users. Which became it's own big scandal a tad later.

Omfg yes I'm tired of this narrative that it's all Don mattrick's fault
Blaming Obama on what?
Don mattrick was the man that gave the xbox its stage 4 cancer, Phil spencer is the one giving it chemotherapy with no signs of improvement 😂😂😂
That's A perfect analogy of what's happening. Don killed Xbox and Phil restored it just not what it use to be which isn't Phil's fault imo. I'm an Xbox gamer with both Series X and S because of my digital library I'm with Xbox in long run but I've been thinking about PlayStation

The cancer could still have been treated in 2013. They could have turned everything around by 2015-2016 with the right decisions. Spencer wants us all in the cloud.
Phil has been horrible. 10 years with no games and still people defend this guy because he's " still learning "
People give Spencer too much leeway. He's been failing for a decade. A decade should be more than enough to right course. Xbox lived by the Halo and died by the Halo. 343 should've been shut down after Halo 4 and 5.
Halo 5 was fairly successful, all things considered.
Both Halo 5 and Halo Infinite sold well. Halo 4 sold poorly, but that was because it was on both 360 and One same reason Titanfall 1 stop poorly.
Because of the Halo name, not 343, and they both fell off a cliff. People bought the original Xbox to play Halo, now they're selling their Xbox because of Halo.@@Tempelers
Halo 5 had the best multiplayer. But the worst story ever.
They made 5 Halo's. That's hilarious.....
That xbox capture analogy sounds ALOT like modern games trying to capture a "modern" audience
24:20 I don't know why people still pretend that Microsoft is competition, it IS just Sony and Nintendo, Microsoft is as much competition as SEGA is, I even bet that Microsoft wants their Gamepass on Playstation!
And even then Sony and Nintendo compete in different markets.
I have fond memories too but I also remember my console dying. Not once but twice.
I was the brother that was always on the Xbox
Mattrick being at Zinga is the perfect place for a paerson with his mindset, as the whole mobile market is all about chasing trends
As much as this hurt Xbox even to this day I also feel its had a negative effect on PlayStation. PlayStation has always been at its peak when competing. No need to try now.
Xbox only really competed against PS in the US. Worldwide, it’s been Nintendo since Xbox has almost no presence overseas outside of the UK.

It's the biggest market for sure, but it isn't be all end all. PS3 outsold the 360 in the end because the 360 did worse than the PS3 outside of the US.
"they didnt do awful in Europe or worldwide."
The 360 generation was the only time the Xbox brand did okay outside of the US.
PS3 beat the 360 in sales. Where the PS3 flopped was that it lost a lot of money because of a lot of early mistakes Sony made in that generation.
"Point still stands that PlayStation had to actually try when Xbox 360"
Yes and no. Sony was its own worst enemy in that generation. It also completely lost Japan to Nintendo.
"Microsoft did convert PlayStation fans and would have grown their market share"
That was actually split between the 360 and the Wii. Or to say, the 360 took Sony's hardcore fans while Nintendo took their casual fanbase.
"hey would have kept the most important"
In terms of games, the most important market is actually Japan since the vast majority of SE, Capcom, Namco, and others' money comes from the JP market, not UI. One of the biggest blows to Sony was losing Dragon Quest to the DS.
21:00 Concord against Wukong ??? No chance 😂
Phil has done 100x more damage than Don ever did. Phil has spent over 100b of Microsoft's money and Xbox is worse off than it ever has been before.

I was in my early 20s during the Red Ring of Death Saga. I went through 3 repairs and 3 Xbox 360s. I've never had an Xbox console since
It was largely Don, but it was also Steve Balmer and all of the orher executive at Xbox at the time. Including Phil Spencer which he himself admitred he was in the board room meeting when discussing the Xbox One. He didnt like the name, he didn't like the pricing as one of the big reason the 360 was successful was because it was the cheaper console, and even when he abnounced the price on stage and everyone booed, you could see him visibly kinda go "yeah I saw that coming"
The fact of the matter is that Phil's job was to turn the Xbox brand image around and put itnin a place where Microsoft doesnt sell it off.
$70 games are a scam 31:15

I also had three 360s that red ringed. Horrible build quality, but wonderful memories. Needing to buy a memory unit certainly didn't help either.

Phill is coming for he’s spot. If not he’s on track to finish what don started my completely destroying the entire Xbox brand
I honestly haven't touched my switch at all since I got my PS5, the variety of games, streaming quality, and constant games on sale really is more exciting to me (I was a nintendo ONLY fan as a kid, pokemon, mario, animal crossing, the whole nine yards). Nintendo really hasn't put out much in the last 5-6 years, it feels like they've fallen FAR behind in terms of player retention...
47:15 That's what happen to me. My 360 RRoD, so just traded in my games and brought them for the PS3. I never fully went back to Xbox because of the RRoD with the Xbox One X being the last Xbox I brought. I hardly have any games for Xbox because I got a PS4, due to the higher price and Kinect always connected problem. The final nail was Day One games releasing on PC, along side Xbox.
It was so interesting seeing the flip flop when it was all happening.
360 dominated the PS3 for so many years, then PS4 dominated the Xbox One.
Really big fall from grace. Terrible decisions.
Red ring of death era is %100 a standout child memory for anybody currently in their 30s. I had 3 lol
Christmas morning my Xbox red ringed on start up. Boxing Day it’s replacement red ringed on start up. Had to wait until after new years for the 3rd try.
Yeah and despite all the red rings, the Xbox 360 survived and has a good reputation. The Xbox one didn't have any red rings and yet it failed
nah. never knew anyone irl who got it. i got one but that was like 2012 when a lightning hit and while xbox red ringed, television was also fried so dont really count even if it was epic
I had two red ring consoles. Thanks for resurrecting this traumatic memory lol
I need to start golfing 😅😅
Don Mattrick and Phil Spencer are the nails in the coffin for the xbox brand
Phil Spencer has done nothing but improve Xbox's position and undone everything Don Mattrick did, you clown
@@tylerm5862looool undo some of Mattricks decisions sure, but improve their position? It’s literally gotten worse…
Phil has been good for the brand, are you stupid? Up until recently he was the golden boy
Naa... Phil Spencer has increased xbox revenue... People needs to understand how valuable Phil Spencer is to xbox... Can PS and Nintendo survive on software alone? Xbox can and him taking the risk of launching exclusive to Pc was biggest move.. He understood that console sales won't sustain the development cost... PS is doing same thing now...
PS is following everything xbox did even though their console sales are high, but why? Well, software sales matter and Xbox has cash Cow like gamepass which gives them money without launching a single exclusive game..Xbox revenue grew 62% from last year and it's has never went downhill... Their revenue each year is going up..
@@THUGPUTIN revenue isn't profit
Never bought another Microsoft Console after Red Ring of Death 54.2% failure rate.
Same
Yeah, go figure, Sony, a consumer electronics company, can mass produce quality electronic hardware! Every PlayStation I've owned has worked right through to the next generation. I remember playing 360 at my friend's house and asking "What's wrong with this console" fortunately it looks like Microsoft consoles no longer fail quite as regularly, but 360 tainted my view of Their products forever more
@pgf86 now sony barely takes risks and has any worth while games that get me excited. I'm done with GoW. Give me Syphon Filter full budget, Warhawk, Twisted Metal. MAG/SOCOM. Pay for online play, sony doesn't bother making any multiplayer games. We'll what Concord. Trash. Sony doesn't get my money anymore either.
@@MonoThrash-z2zthe 4bill bungie mess was a risk, didn't pay off 😂😂, but still. The live service push by Jim Ryan, Risky? I think so, was it worth it? Absolutely not. If they hadn't taken these risks, there may well have been some cracking games on their way. Not taking risks may not be such a bad idea.
I will never forget or forgive this man.
Mistakes were made by Mattrick but Phil Spencer has been much worse for the Xbox console, he ended exclusives, closed beloved studios, launched a new console with 0 flagship games because he was so out of touch with Halo Infinite’s disastrous development.
He ended exclusives which made him great to me
@@om58499exclusives are great for gaming. You have issues if you can’t see that. Do your research and humble yourself because non exclusives is one of the thing that’s helping to destroy gaming.
Microsoft closed them not phil
Please. Don was behind the deici9n to basically.gut MS first party during the back half of the 360 era. First party was not seen as important. And they killed their studios at the worst possible time.
Exclusivity should end. It's anti consumer.
Power On is a great documentary!
These companies were trying to standardize motion controls and capture all those people who ordinarily would not play videogames. These potential customers far outnumber people who play traditional videogames. Think of the people who bought a Wii or the people you know personally who bought a Wii.
Bro the red ring of death was soooo heartbreaking 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
i'm gonna be honest, i'm happy that exclusives are becoming more less and less of a thing. I'd love to see Playstations and Xboxs just be media centers that can play games, but so much cheaper than PCs that it makes sense to get them. Whereas if you want those AAA graphics with ultraspecs, you go out get a PC and stream it to (insert device here). It just overall makes sense to me.
My original XBOX with the Duke controller red ringed. It was not a good system. I regretted getting it instead of a PS2. So next generation I got a PS3 and never got another Microsoft console.
And they're still making terrible decisions. Microsoft have absolutely no idea what they're doing.
Didn’t Nintendo do away with that creator program a few years ago?
Another perspective, they went after the modern audience and threw away core gamers
Show us your candle collection!
As a Playstation fan, I can say Don Mattrick is my favorite XBox CEO 😂
He's my favorite😂😂😂
Xbox was still salvageable in 2013, and Mattrick had a few okay years with Xbox 360. Spencer is a liar and deceitful.
The answer is yes, and the people are Mattrick and the other executives at Xbox in charge of launching the XB1.
