    Hi, Joe, I also use starter strips exclusively and find 3/4 inch forks best. Right now I have some leftover waxed plastic foundation that I am using up and the bees like it OK but I have also found that they do best with wax strips. For those who have not used starter strips, levelling your hives from side to side is critical to prevent the bees from building crooked combs. We have gone into our dearth and we are pretty much done for the year. Historically I have used hive top bucket feeders but have shifted to open feeders with your pool noodle floats. Less robbing and less work.

    Thanks Joe. I add one thing no one mention is that a starter frame must be between to comb frames. If not they can build out incorrect. Learned the hard way.

    I buy lollypop sticks from a craft shop and glue them on with a hot glue gun and it worked perfectly.

    I do believe you have had alot more rain than I up on the lake in NW Indiana. My mites have been just the opposite, lower.

    I got away from using only starter strips..they seem to make way too many drone cells..I do however still use some in my swarm traps.

    skinny, I tried 3 frames like this... they love it... drawing comb faster than on my foundation... should I be doing this in my honey supers? im unclear... I have 3 hives... only one is taking to the brand new medium size foundation...

    Joe do you have a press or do you just dip to make foundation?and have you tried using wood strip instead?

  • @russellkoopman3004
    @russellkoopman3004 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I screwed up on a honey super and forgot that one of the supers didn't have any foundation. Week later they had it half drawn and full of honey. No starter strip or wood strip. Sometimes you get lucky??

    How important is the cell embossing on a starter strip? Could you use just flat wax with no embossing?

    • @LittleBitsHoneyBeesjoemay
      @LittleBitsHoneyBeesjoemay  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Flat wax will work but it is brittle when you emboss it more flexible.

    Interesting channel joe , had bees for 5 years now , i watched all of your beginner series and learnt many little tips and tricks ,have handed them on to other bee keeers i say Thank You to you , i noticed you mentioned in one week of the series that when bees bring in a different nectar as in golden rod ,they will not mix it with other nectar in the hive ,why is that and how do you know , we dont have mites in Australia, but many think it will happen eventually, is there research going on in USA, to find a cure ???? • @LittleBitsHoneyBeesjoemay

      I don't remember saying that they won't mix nectar that's something new to me. Yes they are working on mites don't know if they will win. I will go back and look at week one maybe I was trying to say something else.

      I went back and watched it I meant to say they usually won't mix sugar syrup with nectar together. If there is a flow on they store nectar and usually use sugar syrup for day to day living.
