  • My Alfa 145 exhaust has unfixed itself again... old Alfa does old Alfa stuff. No one is shocked. But I did fix my boot struts at last!

    Don’t think I’ve seen a video that captures the beauty of Alfa ownership better than the first 3 minutes of this... every emotion in there, love it!

    You don't need a 2nd hand hanger, get some 10mm bar from your local hardware store and make your own :) You could even make your own rear hanger from a loop of the bar. I gotta say I love the way you make the simplest of jobs look like a major repair of the space shuttle in space with only chewing gum and a screw driver to undo a bolt whilst wearing a scuba diving re-breather. But that's what makes this channel.

    I know it's not your intention but it's comedy genius. At first I thought it smacked you off the head, had to watch it again. Then the hammer sliding down in your hand... Good Monday evening entertainment.

      It smacked me first time in the dark, second time I caught it! I’d forgotten how crappy that rubber mallet was...

    Italy can do food (which, to me, includes wine), fashion and art. Not so sure about mecanical stuff (with the only exception of coffee machines).

    Try taking a look at car builder solutions, they are sure to have a large range of exhaust fittings for a more permanent solution.

    Funnily enough I replaced the struts on my 145 today as well. Then promptly broke the bonnet prop hinge! I wander if there's a way of re-using the old hatch struts to use on the bonnet .. hmmm...

      I have all kinds of junk in the older ones, this feels new enough not to worry..which is always a mistake!

    The solution was to fix it properly the first time not keep bodging it and then being surprised when the bodge gave up. Weld on a centre mount and the rear rubbers won't keep failing.

    • @furiousdriving
      @furiousdriving  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did use proper mounts, they lasted less time than the cabe ties the car came to me with - which I cut off

    Nice videos, just found them. I am an Alfa nut and no offence meant, if you can’t fit a pair of boot struts maybe you shouldn’t own an Alfa haha. Although the Alfa will help you learn the hard way.

    That's reminded me, I need to change the struts on the Golf. They're not quite as bad as the Alfa's yet, but I've had the boot land on my head more than once. I've been meaning to do that for over a year...
    A Range Rover Haynes manual... Do you own a Range Rover? I just wondered ;) I've got a box of manuals somewhere in the garage for cars that I've never owned.

      Boot struts are one of the jobs that never get done..even if it smacks you in the head every time and the parts are on your desk...
      I had a 1990 Vogue SE 3.9 for a bit, loved it and used it all the time but had to get rid in the end. The 4.6 V8 Im building is a hybrid P38, P6 and SD1 so Im using that Haynes book as reference as well as the older books. Ive got a stack of books for cars I used to have but kept the book in case I get another one...its good to be prepared!

      I’ve used bits of wire out of a skip, garden twine and a wire coat hanger, sadly wearing boots with no laces I was stuck

    Hope you don't mind me commenting about it on this video but it just popped into my head.. when your bangernomics attempt went wrong, surely you should've bought a rover 75/MG ZT? Would suit you much more I imagine 😂😂

      A valid point, I did consider that, but had a colleague doing similar high work miles in a 75 estate and had a fairly routine part wear out (I forget what) and he couldnt find one for over a month so was abusing his classic cars with boxes in the back and all weather work miles and I didnt want to be in that position, I looked at a SAAB as well but decided the Ford would be easiest to maintain. What a mistake!

    Exhaust dropping off is normal behaviour for this make of vehicle and is to be expected.

    Here's some GOOD advice, put half a dozen BIGGER diameter cables ties in all your old jalopys, that way you won't get caught out again.....

    • @furiousdriving
      @furiousdriving  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ive got all kinds of emergency junk in the older cars, but for some reason only a jump pack in the Alfa! I normally have zip ties, gaffer tape bungies and a couple of screwdrivers floating about and that stops anything from breaking...

      I couldnt find one, I cut all mine up to fit P6 door handles and window winders years ago! I have added a bit for security now as well until its fixed properly
