I love seeing Minty in the video. My kitty I had for 21 years crossed the rainbow bridge a couple of months ago, and Minty gives me happy memories of her. Best wishes for a Merry Christmas!
Used premier seeds direct many times. They are a good company, my first choice for buying seeds. Never had a problem with them, prompt delivery. Competitive prices with plenty of seeds in a paclet and always germinate well.
my savoy cabbage and leeks are looking great also I got carrots in a sand box ready for Christmas dinner but next year I want to grow all the vegetables for Christmas dinner I like to wish you Charles and your family a very merry Christmas and a prosperous new year 🤘
Lovely garden as always Charles…. Just enjoying a fine meal of pasta, Scotch, and a side of cooked beetroot salad with oregano ironically…. There’s always pests, unfortunately. I sealed my beds for raccoons, and then squirrels got in somehow, oh lord.
I was surprised that you only get 8 hours daylight... until I calculated.😆We are only getting 8.5 here in Tennessee, US. No wonder I’m not getting things done!😁
So glad you found little Minty🐈 Our foundling cat that we brought back from the streets of Greece is enjoying having a "glazed-in"(conservatory?) balcony here in Sweden, and so am I. We recently moved in to our new home and I immediately sowed some lettuce seeds just because I couldn't help it. They sprouted and are doing well thus far😊 Have a very merry Christmas with your dear ones including Minty🌟
Loveley little tour Sir Charles 😊. My huge bed full of wonderfully sized winter leeks is unfortunately heavily infested by leek moth. So I have to harvest them all to get a bit to eat as they start rotting already. Seasons greetings from Germany ❤.
Thanks for showing me green growing things. It's cold here. Nice festive red scarf. Minti has real star quality. Be sure to give her something special for the holiday. 🎄
Seeing your Garlic doing well reminded me that I planted my Garlic very late in the spring, however as you suggested it might, in fact, they did surprise me and we are still enjoying the harvest with probably enough to last until March. I am collecting as many leaves as possible to fill my compost bins and builders' sacks for next year's compost.
Minty!🐈 It must have been so worrying when she went missing. Glad you found her. Maybe she will take out the rabbits for you - my Felix kills hares bigger than he is! My pest issue in winter, it seems, it's deer and the damned moles! So so many in our local area, it's really ridiculous. Good soil I guess. Lots of worms and grubs in it! The cat does his best, but my grassed paths are turning to mud. I wish it would freeze properly. We're having a very "South of England" winter so far (just with slightly shorter days). But my garlic, greens, brassicas and peas are doing well. :-)
Thanks Kirsty and yes some cold would help in many ways. That sounds frustrating to have so many moles. We have just a few and managed to trap ones that come in the garden.
Great video - interesting compost results! Poor Minty - and last week you got her with a spadeful of wood chips 😅😅 Merry Christmas to all of you from sunny warm NZ 😊🌻🌱
Great to see your garden holding up well so far and your brussels still standing :) My garden got hit pretty good with the storm the other week, all of my mustards and field beans look like someone has taken a blow torch to them, im assuming this is where the wind has sucked all the moisture out of the plant. I done speckled oak very densely planted in mushroom baskets this year with no thinning and they have done amazingly well inside, i love salanova but this is fast becoming one of my favorite varieties. Happy solstice, now we can start looking forward to longer days again.
Mid-latitude dweller here ... I would not enjoy only 8hr sunshine. I also don't know how I would like the quicker changes in daylight and seasons. Ik for sure I would love the longer hours in the Summer. When Charles said mid winter, it made me think. I wonder why we start seasons on the equinoxs and solstices rather than have those days in the middle of the seasons. Hmm .. kind of like why do we have and when will we ever get rid of the ludicrous daylight savings time. Charles, I'm very grateful for this solstice video, and happy to see whatever you have in mind to share with us on the 26th. Merry Christmas.
Thanks Ted and yes the terms can be misleading! Because it's so overcast here, our sunshine in December is averaging two hours per day. When the sun appears, I rejoice!
Thank you Charles for showing your garden tu us once again! That‘s a nice thing, beetroots that don’t freeze and rot in winter! Ours sadly don‘t due to harder frosts once in a while in winter. Your salads really look nice! Have a nice Christmas. Christ Jesus our saviour has been born!👶🏼🎉✨✨✨
Premier seeds are great, I exclusivley used them for years but now they will not send to Ireland (or even NI) since brexit, which has made getting seeds somewhat difficult. I found that premier seeds have a bigger range than alot of other places. Plus much better prices. Now we have to order from all over EU which makes the cost of a few packets very expensive with delivery.
Unfortunately it's because Northern Ireland is treated as part of Europe due to the open border with southern Ireland. Any seed, which crosses the border from England, Wales, or Scotland has to have a phytosanitary certificate, even an envelope with one packet of seed. It's an expensive, long and difficult certificate to achieve. I lost a consignment of seeds from Germany two years ago, I decided it was not worth the tests' cost and risk of failing.
Excited about this Premier Seeds collaboration, Charles. Will this be announced by you on TH-cam each month? They are so affordable and in my experience germination is good❤ would be gr8 if u did shorts each month for the following month promoting seeds to be sown!!!! Very useful indeed 🥰
Charles did you hear that if you put seeds in sandy poor soil, plants will activate genes that will help plant to survive and then you transplant them into very good soil with compost and then boom 🎉
Hi Charles. Just wondering if the mushroom compost you use is peat free. So much of it does contain peat, and if it doesn't, where can it be sourced from? Thanks. Scott
My late mother used to feed two calico ferals. As her estate isn't yet settled (she passed away in March 2023) my sister & I look after her property & feed them (as well as her two indoor cats). In that time, wre've pretty much tamed the pair of them, so hopefully will be able to find them new homes when the time comes.
Merry Christmas Charles. All that lettuce looks great! Getting too cold here and things are freezing. Going down below 10 F possibly tomorrow night. Question on your mushroom compost that's doing so well. Has it already been used to grow mushrooms (spent) or is it truely fresh never used? I think the stuff I get is spent.
Thanks, you too! Sounds cold. Yes, always I get it when it's done its thing with mushrooms. The word spent is misleading because for all plants with leaves, it's in fantastic condition, as we see here. Just for mushrooms, it's a little too decomposed.
All my salad leaves in the polytunnel are doing fine, except for Grenoble red. 90% have gone from healthy to keeled over in no time. I should dig them up & see if the flippin' field voles (they're a real problem) have eaten the roots - but why nothing else?
Hmm. Do you have a cat? Mine has VERY strong "opinions" about lettuce, spinach and beetroot spacing (nothing else) and will dig them up... He does conscientiously deal with the voles (his absolute FAVOURITE snack) so I forgive him!
I wonder how many people have adopted cats lately thanks to you and Minty!
I love seeing Minty in the video. My kitty I had for 21 years crossed the rainbow bridge a couple of months ago, and Minty gives me happy memories of her. Best wishes for a Merry Christmas!
Oh wow, 21 years, amazing.
I have no idea about here age.
Used premier seeds direct many times. They are a good company, my first choice for buying seeds. Never had a problem with them, prompt delivery. Competitive prices with plenty of seeds in a paclet and always germinate well.
Nice to see
Yes, I always buy from Premier Seeds Direct and the Package and Posting price is a third of the price compared to other companies.
Nice try diddy
Merry Christmas Charles to you, your family and coworkers.
Many thanks!
Thanks for the tour.
Merry Christmas Charles and co. Remember, from now on, your days are getting longer.😊
Cheers from Melbourne Australia!
Thank you

Thanks so much Anna, and may your lettuce thrive!
If only the pigeons would eat the rabbits, who ate the slugs, who ate the snails, who eat the root fly!! Alas not.. :)
What a wonderful plan!
You missed off the field voles & woodlice.🙃
If you've got some cream, Dijon, red wine and cherries you can make both the rabbit and the pigeon into wonderful fall meals...
a very Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Many thanks

Oh no! I think they might recover over winter without cutting

Cured & Smoked Rabbit goes great with cornbread and greens 😋
Sounds amazing
I make rabbit curry - better than chicken.
Have a lovely festive rest. See you again when the sun starts moving!
Can't wait!

Thanks so much Gemma
Lovely tour Charles. Have a wonderful Christmas.
Thank you and to you
Thanks for the idea of growing lettuce in the crates using straight compost. I shall be eager to undertake when I return from vacation!
Thanks for showing me green growing things. It's cold here.
Nice festive red scarf.
Minti has real star quality. Be sure to give her something special for the holiday.
🎄
Thanks for your lovely comment and something special is the plan!

How exciting! ❤️
Cat was definitely trying to steal the limelight 😄
I've had good results from Premier Seeds, sounds like a good tie-up for you.
Have a good Christmas!

Speckled oak leaf sounds fun

Annoying as f**k isn't it? I literally check the postage info page on their website every month to see if they manage to get seed to NI. So annoying.

Bonjour.Allez vous faire des semi de carottes sur couche chaude l année prochaine?

Hi Charles, Do you recommend having a heater in the Greenhouse over the Winter, as i'm worried about my Grapevine!?Happy Christmas.🌲🥰
Not at all and vines are fine in frost
Charles did you hear that if you put seeds in sandy poor soil, plants will activate genes that will help plant to survive and then you transplant them into very good soil with compost and then boom 🎉
Have not heard of that, might give it go next year, 😊seed starting mix is usual mostly sand.
Yes some say that. Mine go boom from starting in compost!
Hi Charles.
Just wondering if the mushroom compost you use is peat free. So much of it does contain peat, and if it doesn't, where can it be sourced from?
Thanks.
Scott
It has some peat, as most of it does
Thanks Charles great video and I love your lovely Calico cat Minty shes cute 💚
Thank you Carol, I am glad you enjoyed it 🙂

looks like dowding has Moorland Gold compost
At the moment, I'm not using it, mostly it's my own home-made apart from what I'm showing you, and also I use Urban Wyrm peat-free
@CharlesDowding1nodig i used home made but still bought some.Clover peat compost is good
Merry Christmas Charles. All that lettuce looks great! Getting too cold here and things are freezing. Going down below 10 F possibly tomorrow night.
