Would have been a sin to cast anyone else as the Scarecrow. According to Ray, they almost did and he pleaded and subsequently convinced the studio to give it to him. Or something to that effect.

That’s right: Originally, Buddy Ebsen was cast as The Scarecrow and Ray as the Tin Man, now Ray had always wanted to play the Scarecrow since he was a little boy, and after some back and forth the studio allowed him and Buddy to switch roles, Buddy was fine with it and went over some basic things with Ray.
This also led into a completely different story about Buddy getting incredibly ill from the Tin Man makeup, nearly dying, and having to be replaced by Jack Haley.
Lot of things happened when making The Wizard of Oz. 😯

One of a very few dancers who could make his legs look as if they didn't belong to him!

Just imagine how much work and training he did to develop the stretch and then the muscles to rise up from a complete split. No wonder he was chosen to play the Scarecrow for the Wizard of Oz

Surprisingly enough, Bolger was originally slated to play the Tin Man but he really wanted to play the Scarecrow. He had to go down to MGM with his wife and fight with the company to get the part.

Ray Bolger(the Scarecrow); In my opinion, among the greatest dancers that ever lived. Dances just like an animated cartoon. Smooth as silk.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but ray was probably a much better dancer than even Fred Astaire. To pull off those dance moves, you’d almost need to have no bones! The parts wheee he did the splits and 2:16 were particularly flooring

That's the reason why he wanted to play the scarecrow instead of the tin man in the wizard of oz because of this scene.

I remember watching the documentary on my VHS copy of the movie and this number was shown during the part when Ray’s casting as the Tin-Man and fight to play the Scarecrow was discussed.

His role of the scarecrow from the wizard of oz 1939 is so popular. We could watch the wizard of oz sometimes when we want to enter into our own dreamworld.

Ray Bolger is one of a kind. He lacks class, but he is probably the greatest comedy-dancer in film history.

    • @beatlessteve1010

    • @mikefoley3785

He didn't lack class, he just hid it pretty well for comedy effect.

I think that its wrong to say that Ray lacked class,he wasn't elegant or sophisticted like Astaire but what he lacked there, he made up for with skill and agility. He must have practised for hours to be that good.I think that he was the greatest white tap dancer.

    • @goldsmithstudent

@@amybaker4654 I saw a clip from 1947 and I wanted to find one really early and found this one. He did the same split routine, 11yrs apart, in both. You can only do that if you've practiced it every day for years.
He was already 32 here, and he looks 18...to me.
