i think what Mr. Bolger might have meant was that he had excellent rhythm when it came to 'hoofing' or tap dancing...he had a knack for quick and artistic movements...but when it came to actual 'formal' dancing, like a waltz or two step...he lost that rhythm...possibly bc it required more concentration to know who to actually dance...where as in his skill, he could really do anything as long as it had a beat
I had read an interview about Ray Bolger and someone said that he was an excellent hoofer, but a bad dancer. What is the real difference between the two? When looking at him dance, he does it wild and comical and does a lot of moves that have no dance names. When seeing him in "The Harvey Girls" he did an excellent job as a hoofer, but could not waltz for his life.
