This remake is great! I’m playing it on Switch, and it run/plays fantastic. I’ve never been able to get into the early Wizardry games because the grid graphics of the map were just too cryptic to understand for me, but just being able to see down the halls makes this classic 100 times more playable today. It seems like you’ll still want graph paper because the map isn’t permanent, and resets when you change floors. I got my first party decently leveled now I’m working on a second party. Edit: oh yeah I like how you can view the original screen at any time, that’s a super nice touch they really didn’t have to include but it’s great they did for comparison. I like looking at the old monsters, and unique tiles
I remember trying to play this on NES and it was onenof the hardest freakin games. Once i got down to the 2nd level no matter how high my level was. I would get surrounded by like 12 invisible men, 5 ninjas, freakin 6 samurai, and some weird coins i could never destroy.
This is the game started my RPG journey all those years ago. I still remember I had notepad and pencil to map out all the dungeons as I crawled from square to square, fun time😂

Wizardry was reportedly the game which inspired the whole JRPG genre long ago. You can see the connections. Apparently the title had a lot longer legs in Japan over the years too. I'm happy to see these old RPGs get a fresh coat of paint. However, I wish we could get remasters of the versions from the prime days of the series. Such as Wizardry 5 through 7. At least 6 & 7 anyway. I don't think Wizardry hit it's classic gameplay potential until those.
Yeah I'm not gonna go Google the guy's name but the guy who created Dragon Quest (Warrior) did say he was inspired heavily by Wizardry and wanted to bring that kind of experience to consoles in a simplified fashion. Reducing your party to one hero was a deliberate choice to make the game easier to understand.
I'm so happy about this. Wizardry: Tale of the forsaken lands is one of my favorite games ever, and i'm played probrably more than 20 times by now. I hope this game does well and it brings more of this series that i love so much
I played this on the NES when I was like 10. I memorized the maze, even the dark level where you can only feel your way around by bumping into the walls to get to the elevator. Kids were just made different back then, I guess. Maybe less distractions. Anyway, it's one of the best games ever made if you like games that aren't there to placate you and you like figuring things out.
Thank you for the honest review. It's great to understand the demarcation between enjoying the traditional, punitive experience and the quality of life changes we've grown accustomed to.

Played the full series 1,2,3,5,6,7,8 The return of Werdna was a stand alone 4th game. I was really hard to get a hold of at that time. Each game was difficult, and you would spend 100's of hours on each game some would take 6 to 8 month to finish. Games these days are over in less than a week or they are shooters. You had to work up your characters and learn patters and good strategy if you wanted to survive. You don't see that in games today. Plus some games have terrible stories and plots. I sure hope they do the same for part 2,3, and 5. 6-8 are good as is. Not sure how many will like the 4th one The Return of Werdna, it is not party driven. This reminds me of why I didn't finish my College degree till I was much older. Games didn't have good graphics, but the playability and fantasy roll play was epic.

Wizardry series has always been a meat grinder. There is more Wizardry Llylgamyn saga "lore" actually in the older game instruction manuals, NES game manual/artbook and Japanese Wizardry Ttrpg. Wizardry "canon" is at best disjointed and/or speculative, until you reach Dark Savant Trilogy.
Regarding things not being explained well, the original game came with a very extensive manual. I’m surprised it’s not built into this version. You should check because I bet it is. If not, I suggest you find it online.

I'm a big fan of earlier versions of the game, so I'll probably enjoy this. Old-school gameplay and brutal difficulty are things I enjoy in RPGs, maybe this will be something that will have a niche appeal because of this but that audience will likely be satisfied with the gameplay and presentation. I'll have to check this one out when I have the time, it's too bad I couldn't review it due to the release date being at a bad time for me personally where I had other obligations.
Wizardy is beyond brutal. I haven't checked all the features of this new one that probably has wimp mode built in but the real deal was NO saving... or rather, constant saving... your party would get killed and stay where they lied. You could go retrieve their bodies (and equipment) IF you had an empty spot in your party for them. So, you know, your level 15 party went deep into the dungeon and got killed in a rough spot. If you want them back you'll need a smaller party (so you have open spots) that's strong enough to survive the trip down there. Go create one from level 1 if you want your old guys back. You can revive them for a SHITLOAD of gold you don't have, and like a 5% chance of the revival actually working and if it doesn't, your party member turns to ash and is simply gone. Make a new party if you want to continue. You can loot the corpses of your previous party members for equipment, if you can get to them. Oh, and you'd better memorize all the spells because you'll be typing them in every time. Chests will explode on you if you can't randomly guess what type of trap is in it AND have a thief that's actually good enough to disarm it. You'll be dying a lot. Do not get attached to your characters. You're basically the manager of a team that's going to fail again and again.. you can keep the gold and equipment and stuff but the actual guys are really really doomed. Maybe think of it as Groundhog Day or maybe better as that Tom Cruise time loop movie... you can do it again and again until you figure out what to do and also get lucky enough to do it. Say hi to Murphy's Ghost, because you'll be seeing him a lot every time you take a fresh level 1 guy down into the depths. I think I'd be happy with chooseable spells, and even an auto-map (that one is very arguable because you should be making your own map for these games.. it's just the way it's meant to be played)... some better inventory systems just so I can see what's going on better, but actually I wouldn't want them to touch the difficulty at all, even though it's really really unfair. This is a proving ground, not a "game". You're really only proving your dedication to finishing a really old game nobody will care about when you tell them about what you've done, but if you can do it, you'll feel proud.
The progression of Wizardry games as released in America is *_my personal_* progression and love of RPGs. Particularly 8.I loved just how many infinite combinations you could come up with... For example, one night I sat down to play a new run through... so first you think about races, and there's a lot in 8, and their specific stats/abilities, then how well those fill certain roles but what "Class" will they be to fill that role... will they Start that class and multiclass later? Cause kinda like Final Fantasy Tactics, you can mix the skills learned from different classes be keeping them after the class changed, so you could start them in a class that has stealth to add to their AC and then train them in that before changing to a class that doesn't have the stealth skill, you won't be able to gain any more in that skill but you *_WILL_* retain the skill your character LEARNED... okay so a Draconian Rogue to start with the plan to change into fighter/Paladin later... okay, that's 1 of your *_6_* characters... I literally sat there checking stats, thinking about stat progression for the super skills unlocked at reaching 100stat, etc.... for about 2hours... not once *_ACTUALLY_* playing the game... just *_THINKING_* about playing the game... and I had an absolute *_BLAST_* doing it. Still do sometimes since there's mods to speed up movement and combat turns. Not to mention you could bring your characters from wizardry 7 *INTO* Wiz 8, and if I remember you could bring your characters from Wiz 6 into 7 and then into 8. The whole series, while having flaws and limitations at every step, was cutting the path through the unexplored jungle of RPG gaming.
The last wizardry I played was on ps3. I love rpgs amd play quite a few dungeon crawlers like grimmlock, and bards tale 4 but this game is on a whole new level. Its soooo hard. The lack of a tutorial really hurts it as mechanics and terms are left unexplained the entire time
I had NO CLUE there was a remake. Years ago I worked at SirTech. I MUST get this remake! I don't care how good or bad it is. What a blast from the past!
@@anonamatron LOL. I was 15 at the time and I don't think that ever crossed my mind... I did notice that 'Trebor' was Robert backwards.. and of course Werdna is Andrew reversed. He told me at the time that many people never realized that...
@@cozmothemagician7243 What kind of job did you have at a game company at 15 years old, and why the hell was I never informed of such opportunities when I was young? When I was young my teachers would always tell me to give a serious answer if I said I wanted to be involved in the gaming industry in some way, and no useful computer classes were ever offered to me until I was in college.
This is for those of patience and a willingness to learn how things were done in the awesome "beginning." Traits which, for the most part, have been lost over the years by most, not all.
Hmmm.. since the remake supposedly uses the original source, I wonder if the 'identify 9' bug (oops I mean 'undocumented feature*') can still be used to great advantage. In the original you only had 8 inventory slots. And when a Bishop class did an identify if they pressed '9' instead of giving an error or just ignoring the keystroke it would instead 'identify' the bishop's experience and give OOODLES of XP. * When I brought up this bug with Robert , he said "It is not a bug, it is an 'undocumented feature. I really enjoyed my time at Sirtech. For a young computer nerd like me it was truly a dream come true at the time.
Those of you who are new to this game, do yourselves a favor and play Custom mode wherein you roll for ability scores instead of a set quantity. You can tap □ to reroll (on PS5) until you get even as high as 29 (20 is a decent standard). As for you more experienced players, do yourselves the favor of going fully random without rerolls.
You can create drama, immersion, and tension in this game by doing exactly what it advises you not to do ... get attached to your characters; custom made ones, of course, whom you've named and spec'ed, and find yourself fighting to fund their possible resurrection. I created my party based on my first D&D campaign, naming them after my PC and my friends' PCs too. This ill advised approach more than makes up for the minimal story elements.
@@anonamatron correct, but for those who can't help but desire that element of rpgs, mostly because they are more into jrpgs than drpgs, that's how they can trigger those mental responses. I personally think it's more fun to keep things random af to the extent that each dungeon crawl is like a poker hand. Roll for stats, and replace characters as needed, etc... but I have played both ways, and both are possible and manageable depending on the player.
@@brandonwells1175 I think you're intended to imagine your own story and interactions between party members here. Like you're playing a role.. I get into jrpgs a lot more easily but respect Wizardry and the like a lot.
so what we used to do BITD to get money on the game is make dozens of characters in the training ground, add them to the party, transfer all the gold to one character, and then swap out five new characters... rinse and repeat. after a while you have enough gold to get all the expensive stuff.
Now we just need a remaster of Rogue (the game that started a genre. The Rogue-like), and the first Ultima, which combined with Wizardry 1, are all equally responsible for inspiring Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Heck RPGs as a whole.
Would be good to go back to my RPG days with this style as I did on my C64, Amiga and PC but due to life responsibilities time no longer permits. Enjoy for those who can 👍
Don't overextend, make sure party level is atleast double the floor you're on. Don't got to L2 without dialko & latumophis from your clerics spells Once you're ready (decent hp & have tiltowat) get the blue ribbon on L4, & make quick runs to lower levels to lvl quicker
I was super into it (playing on DOSbox) until I got to I think level 3 where ninjas came out and decapitated nearly everyone in my party instakilling them. I didn't really have the heart to go on after that. Is there any defense against that?
@anonamatron armor class is about the only thing there - melee fighters should be around 1 at that point with the equipment they're wearing. With ninja (& other annoying large groups) use mahalito/lahalito from your mage, & I use katino from a samurai & manifo from my cleric to try helping lock them down (I run 3 samurai for melee fighters)
@@jscc1786 Does armor class protect against what seems like an instakill? It didn't do any hp damage, it just lopped my head off. Not letting them have a turn would work I suppose but seems pretty dangerous.
@anonamatron AC makes it more likely their attack will fail to get through, but there's the chance for critical hit roll (ninja L7+ & Hatamoto can break most ac for decapitation until you get to -10 & lower)
Wizardry series led to birth of JRPG genre and influenced Western RPGs, roguelikes and even adventure/VN games. This series does not gets its due in mainstream gaming coverage.
I bought this game but havent played it lol everytime i want to start im like ehhhhh do i though?? if they just updated the game and added a few months worth of new systems and lore this game would be top tier.....I hope another dev takes the chance.
It's impossible to be faithful to the original and cater to modern audiences. The only catering that would make sense is a tutorial, in place of a physical manual.
Badly needs patching on Switch. Keeps hanging mid fight like it’s waiting for an input and all you can do is exit to Home Screen and force close - hoping it has saved as far as possible. I would avoid buying right now. Very annoying for a £35 game.
This game crashes a LOT. Using the steam version, updated, have 128 GB ram, loads of HD space... and WOW is this annoying... Crashed in battles like Murphy's Ghost, casting dumapic just walking around...
I have NEVER liked Wizardry, and I have been playing video games since the 8-bit NES and 8-bit Sega Master System days. While there was a Wizardry port on the NES in the U.S during 1990, most console players into 8-bit RPGs during the mid to late 80's and early 90's HATED Wizardry. 95% of people with a NES who liked RPGs were playing one of the four Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior) games on NES or Final Fantasy to get their RPG fix. Anyone who had a Sega Master System had the best 8-bit RPG: Phantasy Star. They also had YS, Miracle Warriors, etc. Only reason I'm watching this review is because Limited Run has a physical of this Wizardry remake and I was hoping the game had huge improvements to the gameplay and had an incredibly easier difficulty option. Unfortunately, the game's difficulty is still brutal in a ludicrous way even with this remake. I'm staying away from this. Yeah, I know Wizardry inspired all those other RPGs I enjoyed during the 80's and very early 90's on 8-bit consoles from Nintendo and Sega, but all those other games did it so much better. Heck, even by 1981 computer standards, Ultima 1 from 1981 is a much better game than the original 1981 computer version of Wizardry.
Lemme add to the video's commentary... DO play this if you enjoy Poker or any other similar gambling games... old school RPGs were more about luck than skill, hence their appeal to that older generation of gamers.

This is a proving ground, not a "game". You're really only proving your dedication to finishing a really old game nobody will care about when you tell them about what you've done, but if you can do it, you'll feel proud.
I'm pretty sure I played this on Playstation ages ago!! This is weirdly nostalgic
It has been around a LONG TIME!
The lack of a tutorial really hurts it as mechanics and terms are left unexplained the entire time
"Potato flower in full bloom" uses this formula
I had NO CLUE there was a remake. Years ago I worked at SirTech. I MUST get this remake!
I don't care how good or bad it is. What a blast from the past!
Did you tell Robert Woodhead that his name sounds really inappropriate?
I'm a huge fan of Wizardry 8 and dungeon crawlers in general so I'll have to check this one out!
NICE!
Hmmm.. since the remake supposedly uses the original source, I wonder if the 'identify 9' bug (oops I mean 'undocumented feature*') can still be used to great advantage.
No it doesn't work 😅 and I tried it 😂
@@lausk9613 Awww, they took away ALL THE FUN
BTW you can pre-order a physical edition of Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord on PS5 or Switch at Limited Run Games until 24th Nov 2024...
This game isn't about story, it's about exploring and perseverance
I'd love to see Legacy of The Ancients make a comeback.
The long-awaited revival of the series!
so what we used to do BITD to get money on the game is make dozens of characters in the training ground, add them to the party, transfer all the gold to one character, and then swap out five new characters... rinse and repeat. after a while you have enough gold to get all the expensive stuff.
I didn't know anything about this game till literally recently. There's a wizardry game on Mobile that's pretty interesting
Enjoy for those who can 👍
Thanks for watching!
I'm really interested in this series, especially the 8th installment. Hopefully that can be remade with a mode for filthy casuals like me!
It looks like cool game
I played Wizardry 7 back in the day. It was magnificent.
Wizardry 6, 7 and 8 are great! I'm currently completing Wizardry 8 with an imported squad. What a great adventure!
were there any pre order bonuses for this gaem?
Don't overextend, make sure party level is atleast double the floor you're on. Don't got to L2 without dialko & latumophis from your clerics spells
Once you're ready (decent hp & have tiltowat) get the blue ribbon on L4, & make quick runs to lower levels to lvl quicker
OMFG. I am buying it now!
Enjoy!
How it is ? I'm oin x box store now .. afraid just some boring repeatable fights, etc ..
How are the gamepad controls?
Thats what I wanted to know as well because I'm debating getting it on PC or my PS5.
Tutorial? RTFM my dude.
They did include a manual, right? RIGHT?
Can I cast Tiltowait
Wizardry series led to birth of JRPG genre and influenced Western RPGs, roguelikes and even adventure/VN games.
This series does not gets its due in mainstream gaming coverage.
Thanks for checking out the video!
Did you ever see the Wizardry Anime that was based on this game? It's quite good.
Never did that sounds cool!
If it's hard like Wizardry 8, i've no reason to pass this game. I am highly surprised a new Wizardry is ready to be played. 🤗
I wish they implemented some quality of life features.
Think of this as a soul-like random battle rpg.
I love you're videos
Thank you it's good to hear you are enjoying them 😀
@@IDreamofIndie you all are welcome my friends
I bought this game but havent played it lol everytime i want to start im like ehhhhh do i though?? if they just updated the game and added a few months worth of new systems and lore this game would be top tier.....I hope another dev takes the chance.
It's impossible to be faithful to the original and cater to modern audiences. The only catering that would make sense is a tutorial, in place of a physical manual.
Nice Video ! Sub & Big Like ! And Love Wizardry Games !
Thanks for the sub!
Saved me money, thanks.
Unplayable for me keeps getting stuck in combat and have to close the game down and restart.
Qualcuno sa se è meglio graficamente su pc o ps5?
Sounds fun, but I'm going to wait for a Steam sale I think.
Thanks for checking out the content!
FFF PPP!
You keep saying it uses a D&D ruleset but it doesn’t. It’s very different and unrelated to D&D
Badly needs patching on Switch. Keeps hanging mid fight like it’s waiting for an input and all you can do is exit to Home Screen and force close - hoping it has saved as far as possible. I would avoid buying right now. Very annoying for a £35 game.
Another bad Switch port? BUMMER!
This game crashes a LOT. Using the steam version, updated, have 128 GB ram, loads of HD space... and WOW is this annoying...
Crashed in battles like Murphy's Ghost, casting dumapic just walking around...
Gislason Stravenue
The Proving Grounds found you ...lacking lol
Just remake Wizadry 8 for god's sake.
DUMAPIC bro :)
Thanks for watching!
Lemme add to the video's commentary... DO play this if you enjoy Poker or any other similar gambling games... old school RPGs were more about luck than skill, hence their appeal to that older generation of gamers.
Thank you so much for watching and sharing your thoughts!
If it's not harder than Shin Megami Tensei, I'm not going!
SMT is a cakewalk compared to this.
😂😮
I played 8 it was great, this is ass so I'll pass.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
