Looks like a pretty standard srpg with a Metal Slug skin. Not what I was expecting. R-Type Command was essentially a freeze frame of a side-scrolling R-Type level, only you navigated it on a turn based basis, and it was awesome. That's what I thought we were getting when this game was announced.
Played a little past the tutorial. It was a slog. The toughest part of it was that some of the text was almost impossible to read. I had to sit close to my tv just to make it out. I'm still looking forward to playing more though. I like the SYNC mechanic which essentially allows your characters to attack multiple times per turn. It could definitely benefit from some updates. Really glad it is on Gamepass.
Deterministic hits and damage makes it a puzzle, not a game. Which is fine. Some people like puzzles. They just aren’t usually for me. I prefer XCOM which has more unknowns and wild swings in luck which changes the board state that you have to adapt to. Many people hate that but for me it’s what makes a game.
I absolutely love the Metal Slug series, but I normally can't stand "strategy" games, so I'll probably only buy this game when a good sale comes along. Don't get me wrong, as I'm happy to see the series venture in to other genres, and lets be honest, tactical strategy was probably the best choice.
Honestly i was worried because of how many years this was in development eith no newd or word for ages. But im glad to hear this is s good game snd ill definitely pick ot up eventually.
I prefer games that allow you to fail forward, not demand you win every time. Variable levels of victory and defeat are what I think great games are made of. But few games are like this these days (XCOM, Masters of Orion 2, Rising Lords, FTL, being exceptions)
Might check this on a sale. I loved the Metal Slug games, but I'm not entirely sure I'd enjoy this as I'm not great at strategy games. I wonder if they will explore other genres for the series 🤔 Thank you for the review! 🤙🏻
Just wish they're release the old ones in a current collection as the last consoles that had access to all 8 titles was the Wii, PSP and PS2. Hour long runs kill any drive to play this, that's too long for this kind of roguelike
A new collection would be nice. They do have all the arcade versions of the games for individual sale through the ACA Neo Geo series on current consoles. $8 per game full price, goes on sale for $4. Sales are very infrequent though, and it's a toss up what games in the ACA Neo Geo line up it will be. Metal Slug XX and Metal Slug 3 also have remasters on PlayStation. Both are on sale for less than $10 right now.
@@hrbr_deluxe it’s true but proper rebuilds would be better because the emulation runs terribly: they’ve all got super high input lag and massive slowdown even with only a few animated figures onscreen. the current console ports are mostly a mess
Thanks for the review but word of advice, please stop spending 30 seconds repeating your ratings formula for every single review because it's becoming annoying, especially when it's already written below the icons

So it's that bad on tv too? It's bad on handheld.
Definitely hype for this

Yeah for sure, like I mentioned the pool becomes a bit more limited when the requirement is to be a fan of the series that also enjoys tactical games.

i was really excited for this, but had no idea it was a roguelike and that's not something i'm interested in for this genre. thanks for the review.
You are very welcome!

Looks like it’s similar to Into The Breach
Probably a level editor would’ve helped.
6:29 That's what i call a "RooM" 😍
Considering playing the game for Fio and Leona
Love tactical games but I hate rougelikes....
Fio. ❤
Oh jeez. I didn't know it was gonna be a roguelike. I understand why it is, but man, I'm just so freaking done with roguelike design.
