I agree. A bit astounding. I had not seen DEVO videos, and found this looking for a particular song. I was listening to "Soundscapes" TV music channel and heard something I'd heard before-a cover of another song but not identifying it. Sometimes they just use the first part.Sometimes they are "new arrangements." But this one: Landfill Tango by Barbara Hills-is a DEVO song. I wanted to go to the comments because often people will mention this, but comments were off. So I'm still wondering, was this song a DEVO one, or someone else from that era?
I am 56 I remember wearing my Devo to school in the 7th grade. I sent away for it from the album people were like “who’s that” I whipped out my tape recorder and showed them.
Many people think Devo is a parody group who were a big joke. In reality, Devo was as punk rock as anyone. This video hit so close to home in 2023 that no one can deny what Devo was trying to say 40 years ago.
The juxtaposition of 'its a beautiful world' with images of the KKK, starving children, and police beating up '60's civil rights protesters towards the end of the video was just so well done. Devo were simply genius. Sad that they were so right about the state of the world and America. It's amazing how well they wove politics and social commentary into their songs and especially their videos.
Devo was about 20 year ahead of their time. The concept of de-evolution and jocko homo. Revolutionary! Too many people missed who they are and what they tried to tell everyone. They predicted what kind of world we would exist in way back in the '80s. A band that was unappreciated in their time and only now do we see them as the visionaries that they were.
This came in my head today, for no reason! I love it and love Devo! Back in the early 80's, my father met Devo's manager. Dad had a plastic packaging business. Well, dad got the contract to make the red Devo hats. Also, with The New Traditionalists album, he got the contract to make the Devo bibs. I got to see them for free when they played the L.A. Forum on their tour for that album!
I saw Devo in concert in KCMO in 1984. They came out on treadmills (beating ok/go by more than two decades) singin' "Love without Anger" I was truly blessed. Me: age 63. I was the target demographic for MTV. 21 in '81.
Me too I'm 63 and Grateful for the times I saw Devo at a young age. Going to San Francisco to see them in a month or so. Been to 2 shows in S.F. and in Oakland CA back in the day. Yep I'm from the Bay aka the 'town' and the 'city'...
god, this music video gets me every time. Such great juxtaposition with the visuals and lyrics. Not to sound like a broken record here, but DEVO were totally right about de-evolution
My first instinct is to always agree with that general notion, but I also tend to then question myself and think are we really "de-volving" or is it more accurate to say we're evolving at a slower rate/stagnating? also is some of it that we're just exposed to EVERYTHING these days with media and the interweb and social media, etc. for example, the stuff in this video isn't like futuristic animations, it is actual footage from the past. And is that stuff, like racism, violence, wars, really any worse today than anytime in the past?
@@eddiehauser6661 Not to be a pedant, but there's no such thing as "de-evolution" because evolution is a random process that has no directed goal or order. If, for example, humans started becoming less intelligent because being less intelligent improved their fitness (meaning that less intelligent people out-bred/out-survived more intelligent people), then it would still just be regular evolution. Natural selection, the mechanism by which randomly evolved traits either survive and spread or die out, is a process that acts with respect to the fitness of an individual within a specific environment. What I mean is that the selection pressures that save some traits and discard others do not act with a goal in mind, so there isn't a direction. However in less technical terms, people often associate evolution as "increasing the complexity or amount of information required to create an organism" and de-evolution as "decreasing the complexity," but even that is misleading as more complexity may result in an organism that is less fit for its environment.
Well, if it's not de-evolution or de-volving, then what is it called when the entire planet is inbreeding? We're all breeding with our distant, and quite often 'not so distant' cousins. I don't want to hear it from you Nay Sayers, YES, we ARE all related genetically!!!
This band meant Everything to me in high school. The fact that the radio wouldn't play them only fed into my image of being a rebel in my mind, lol. These songs were really really great. A year or two ago, as an elementary school teacher, imagine my happiness in hearing a 10 year old boy say, "Devo is my favorite band in the world." "It's a Beautiful World" is classic Devo and what a music video ought to be, released during the Golden Age of music videos. This video is especially relevant today, with the ever widening gap between the haves and have nots.
Hmmm positive cynicism. Interesting terminology. It sounds like, well, reality. People often say I am too negative, however they can't see the simultaneous optimism in what I say during some of those times. They seem to want to be told nothing but flattering words, they want the facts to be omitted from what you say, like being molycoddled. I think the plain truth is liberating, personally.
Yes, 'positive cynicism'' That's the ticket! I was just gonna use the word 'sarcastic' in my comment above, but that's too crude & not as descriptive/accurate as your phrasing(!) Well done, uh, j m. Anybody remember the old "Night Flight" on USA Network? That's the first place I ever saw this video, among MANY others. They had great indie films on there, too. Wish there was something interesting like that now.
You can buy scores of Night Flight DVDs on Ebay. They tend to be a little on the dark and overly contrasty side, but otherwise good copies of all the golden goodness! Now getting all the New Wave Theaters (part of the Night Flight experience, as broadcast on USA) is a little trickier, but many are scattered across TH-cam for free, so.... :) The DVDs run very long, so it's great to set a disk playing on the vid screen and get that great late-night Night Flight feeling again!
I remember watching some late-night music video/variety show back in the early 80's, and actor Roddy McDowell introduced this video acting like he was sitting in a chair, smoking a pipe in his smoking jacket. And to answer your question...I remember "Night Flight" back in the 80's. There was a video I especially remember from that show...Jean Luc Ponty's "Individual Choice". That video had a lot of great aerial shots of cities across the country, and all done to a synthesizer and violin. Cool stuff back then.
I remember it well. New Wave Theater changed the direction of my life and musical tastes! I hope the ghost of Peter Ivers haunts his murderer to this day.
They are showing episodes on IFC now! That's actually where I found this video was in that same Night Flight episode. My dad put it on like 2 months ago and this video shook my world
Greetings from the Philippines 2023 I love this song now just as much as I did back then. I secretly wanted one of those flower pots the used to wear! Hahahaha 😂
I don't know why I keep coming back to Devo. This song does it for me today. It's a beautiful world for you, but not for me. What a statement! Is this a short musical equivalent to Voltaire's "Candide?" Maybe so. Maybe so.
We always come back to Devo... cuz if not, "You must whip it!" non? and yes, maybe so w re: to how your sentiment parallels w Voltaire. As a French spkr, he Foucault and the surrealism mvmt have taught me a great deal...
Billy Elliott The Foucault / Chomsky debates revealed Chomsky to be the warm and hopeful of the two. Both are treasures. I think Mark Mothersbaugh found a simple and elegant angle to cut through national nonsense. In that, he can share a niche with Foucault and Chomsky. Stephen Colbert has exploited a vulnerability in the rhetoric of the right that works in a similar way (i.e., that one step further right goes completely off the cliff). For those who deny that Devo describes life in the 21st Century, I say, "PEEK-A-BOO!"
Billy Elliott Pangloss teaches that everything is for the best and that man lives in the "best of all possible worlds." I understand there was a popular philosophy of the time to always be positive. ALWAYS! It was as oppressive as "The Power of Positive Thinking." The meaning of life should be expressed as simply as possible. But no simpler. (Apologies to Einstein)
I love this post punk new wave era. You could express yourself your hair, your clothes, your attitude, the way you danced. And what was even cooler is with these amazing songs they created. There was a video just as creative.
See this is the one of the times when I really love youtube. Back in the day I would have just lived with the fact that it's a cool vid, but remain a memory today, I type it up, and there it is...awesome.
Since the first time I heard Beautiful World, when New Traditionalists came out, I declared it to be my theme song. Devo has never release something I didn't like. The new documentary looks fantastic.
From a kid who stood on the side of the gym that NO girl wanted to dance with to a politically homeless adult that sees the craziness and horrors of the current times: it's a beautiful world for YOU, it's not for ME!
Man, the 2nd album I ever owned was "Beautiful World"- my DAD bought it for me for my 9th birthday. I think I ripped the paper of and jumped up and SCREEEEAMED!!" at the top of my lungs as I waved it in the air. About 20 years after THAT, I got to see them around their 20-something year reunion, tour, and THAT was 20 or so years ago. Not to age myself or anything
One of my favourite Devo songs, always in the back of my mind somewhere. RIP Bob 2, you were part of a band rich with talent and innovation who had the rare ability to make people think as they danced. You will be sorely missed, but always remembered.
There is no greater feeling in the world than when you discover a song you’ve never heard before! And now it’s one of those moments, I love DEVO they should be more well known amongst my age group! Because they are gold
d e v o was a big part of the 80s. music back then, whatever they want to call it at the time new wave, punk or alternative it doesn't matter , they all knew they were unique and had a sound of their own, besides the visual appearance and controversial lyrics ,they rocked ... thats all that matters
The New York Times sent me here today. I haven't seen this video in many years. Amazing. I saw Devo in the mid-80s at the Palladium in NYC. It was the first band that was interacting on stage with videos projected behind them, while all five of them stood in a line playing mini synths. Mind-blowing.
Great song. I always liked Devo, then found it interesting to read that one of the band members was at Kent State, and witnessed the event that Kent State is famous for. It explains quite a lot.
booji boy is playing god as a "suburban robot monitoring reality" between the two pillars. the stage left pillar is showing images of mans deeds. he wears a tricorn hat for the trinity and throws the 2 fingers and thumb sign for a split second before the image changes. its also worth watching this same song in reverse (available on youtube) to see and hear a different meaning to this song.
Love that synthesizer riff, I just can't get it out of my head. I completely understand the sentiment of the song, but there really is a lot of beauty in this old world, it just has a lot of ugly mixed in with it. We all just have to do our part to make it a little more beautiful and a little less ugly. God bless & have a great day.
80s music is simply some of the best...I miss it. Another great song from DEVO. Many people don't know, but they became tv commercial music composers after their run of radio hits. and composed music for a lot of tv shows
Awesome track! But amazing how these young kids at the time, thought enough, to not only write a clever satire of sorts about the ridiculousness of our great World..., but then all the effort to back it up with this spectacular video, and all in 1981!!😲 Kudos Devo👍
Important to note the singer, Gerald Casale, was within several feet of friends Alison and Jeffrey at the Kent State protest where they were shot dead by National guardsmen in the infamous massacre. He knows of what he sings. Crazy side note, Chrissie Hynde was there too.
im just now getting into devo's music and im loving this great stuff ! devo should be in the hall of fame these guys helped make the music video format they are legends !
All these years later and I'm still DEVOLVING. I'm fated to being a BOOGIE BOI for life... and I couldn't be happier. The DEVOLVED still have Freedom of Choice.
Devo by chance, by design was one of thee most creative and perfect expressions! The spud boys completely dominated in the realm of weird/eclectic pop/rock/punk/new wave performance. I saw them play twice. The first time at Mackey Auditorium, Boulder Co., New Traditionalists tour, on Halloween night.....and the crowd was decked out in full regalia. Just a perfect show, my brain fired up on the magic...Bob Casale shredded....the beauty of it all is the blend...its not about Devo, its the contrast, the absurdity...late seventies/early eighties music was very special: Monochrome Set, Gang of Four, Pere Ubu, Yaz, Eyeless in Gaza, Wire, The Ex, Flipper, Trio, The Residents, Black Flag, Fear, Throbbing Gristle, Flying Lizards, Agent Orange, Joy Division, and so many more
I think this is one of the best videos ever made. Aside from the guy with the rubber mask at the control station, everything els is great. Especially when the lyrics say beautiful people and they show Klansmen and then the cartoon about Radiation poisoning then the cheerleader...
No mention of African dictators or communists in Asia, I guess they were ok and it was the defunct since the1950s KKK that everyone in the early 80s had to worry about..
Devo: Always with the timeless classics. History is going to be very kind to such an innovative, thought provoking band. Oh and the music is always incredible 🤸 Akron Ohio, baby!!☮️♥️🤜🥔🥔🥔🥔🥔
@Oliver Smithth-cam.com/video/k3MxuDk7wqo/w-d-xo.html IT'S a Beautiful World for you and not me And I wish I had a Super Hi-Fi VCR Back in 1981 or when Timothy Leary was on MTV ! And on The We ALL DEVO tape or DVD Timothy Leary plays Doctor Byirdfood while hes in The Giant Computer Keyboard The Fair light !
That’s their (the people’s) problem. They’re missing out. When art is created by the artist and shared with others, how they interpret/receive it is on them.
This is one of Devo's best, but that really isn't fair to how profound, and creative their output was. I always liked how they put their visual image, and their songs together which shows how much they loved their art. Devo was so different than everyone else, and always will be one of my favorite bands.
One of my favorite Devo songs and also one of the first videos that made an indelible impression on me as a kid. Love the country-ish guitar solo as well. Another juxtaposition in the sone missed by many people.
All these years later, and I still don't think the world is ready for this video.

(Now we gotta work on a better User ID for you. I'm Boboala - the missing link between humans & koala bears!)
Intelligent music by intelligent musicians
catchy
This one is childish, predictable, lazy and frankly stupid…. First year art students at a bad college in California….
@@johneeeemarry34 The members of DEVO went to Kent State University in Ohio, Mr. *TROLL.*

The DVDs run very long, so it's great to set a disk playing on the vid screen and get that great late-night Night Flight feeling again!
Chris M yes I totally remember, what about Up All Night?
They are showing episodes on IFC now! That's actually where I found this video was in that same Night Flight episode. My dad put it on like 2 months ago and this video shook my world
Greetings from the Philippines 2023
I love this song now just as much as I did back then.
Lol and #BRAVO, sir... There's nothing like some good analysis to open one's eyes a bit further. Very insightful and enlightening! #CHEERS
I hope you're doing well. 2024 and things are only getting worse. Be safe friend.
I'm Bob 1...I'm still here at 68.
DEVO is an IMPORTANT band!! And the guitar solo is amazing!!
We are all Devo! It is true! Spuds Unite!
Futurama brought me here years ago. A great song brought me back
Same!
There is no greater feeling in the world than when you discover a song you’ve never heard before! And now it’s one of those moments, I love DEVO they should be more well known amongst my age group! Because they are gold
This song really hits on depression.
I don't give a shit what nobody says, best decade ever
Fantastic footage to go with lyrics, the sad irony is not lost on anyone, and more relevant today than ever.
Damn right there`s no description available. You can`t put into words how great a song like this is.
Oh, try, just try... you can do it!
MY GOD ! I'M 67 AND THESE GUYS ARE BEYOND THIS TIME !!! I, HOPE TO SEE THEM AGAIN !
Summer break elementary school early 80s meloncholy memories......love this video
My, my, how I love this video. The best part is to sing out loud with BB, "It's not for me!"
d e v o was a big part of the 80s. music back then, whatever they want to call it at the time new wave, punk or alternative it doesn't matter , they all knew they were unique and had a sound of their own, besides the visual appearance and controversial lyrics ,they rocked ... thats all that matters
Rob W Indeed they did Rob, indeed they did.
How could I have forgotten about this classic? The perils of a befuddled old mind....
I'm really surprised this wasn't a worldwide hit. Fantastic song!!!
If you read that shit then you are shit, flush yourself down a toilet.
Greatest Devo song of all time!
Great song. I always liked Devo, then found it interesting to read that one of the band members was at Kent State, and witnessed the event that Kent State is famous for. It explains quite a lot.
Nice comments Jah love Jah herb Jah Jerry Jah rastafari Tucson Arizona Sonoran 🏜desert 🦓🦙🐪🌵🌵🌵
It explains the 20 year old girl naivety of this song…
booji boy is playing god as a "suburban robot monitoring reality" between the two pillars. the stage left pillar is showing images of mans deeds. he wears a tricorn hat for the trinity and throws the 2 fingers and thumb sign for a split second before the image changes. its also worth watching this same song in reverse (available on youtube) to see and hear a different meaning to this song.
Prophetic music, foretells a realistic view of human development.
80s music is simply some of the best...I miss it.
Another great song from DEVO. Many people don't know, but they became tv commercial music composers after their run of radio hits. and composed music for a lot of tv shows
I remember watching that song on Ready to Roll as a teenager...seems a very long time ago now but still relevant.
I just discovered this song. what an incredible band
Awesome track! But amazing how these young kids at the time, thought enough, to not only write a clever satire of sorts about the ridiculousness of our great World..., but then all the effort to back it up with this spectacular video, and all in 1981!!😲 Kudos Devo👍
Great mantra to instill within the hearts and minds of the people of the Earth ❤
My favorite Christmas carol ! ! ! ! ! !
Never underestimate the greatness of Devo!
Love those classic synth sounds.
Important to note the singer, Gerald Casale, was within several feet of friends Alison and Jeffrey at the Kent State protest where they were shot dead by National guardsmen in the infamous massacre. He knows of what he sings. Crazy side note, Chrissie Hynde was there too.
Love this video. Thanks, that explains a lot.
Most influential band in the last 30 years
RIP Bob 2
Heard this for the first time last week. Cool song!
Amazing track from an often misunderstood genius band - I believe this is the first music video to make into the Museum of Modern Art, NYC
The video takes it to another level! Intense!
im just now getting into devo's music and im loving this great stuff ! devo should be in the hall of fame these guys helped make the music video format they are legends !
One of Devo's best of the groundbreaking music videos they made! So sarcastic, yet so real! Love this song in general!
Not just funny stuff, actually really well played and super well recorded. Love these guys.
Was any of it actually funny, though?
@@sdm1568 Obviously not to you!
I love the surf guitar sound / style they have.
Devolution is real.
yup. It's the 80s again!!
You got that from the document the Chinaman gave you...
yes sir , fake news is fake news , but DE-EVOLUTION IS REAL !, even in 2018 !
Robert E. Roman, Jr. But electing Trump was a step backward
Righteous brother Jah love Tucson Arizona Sonoran desert 🏜
No mention of African dictators or communists in Asia, I guess they were ok and it was the defunct since the1950s KKK that everyone in the early 80s had to worry about..
They were a great band.
They still are...
Devo: Always with the timeless classics. History is going to be very kind to such an innovative, thought provoking band. Oh and the music is always incredible 🤸 Akron Ohio, baby!!☮️♥️🤜🥔🥔🥔🥔🥔
One of the all-time best songs and videos put together. Very metal even.
Here's Looking at You Bob! Thanks for the GREAT music! We will all miss you!
Devo - what an amazing band they were
Iove Devo ..they spoke truths in the songs. Very underrated band
Are we not men......we are DEVO.Tis a shame men no longer exist.
DEVO are quite alive and well
It’s IS a shame that men no longer exist
Back in the mid-eighties Timothy Leary VJ'd on MTV. This was the second song on his play list.

Did you know That The Little Boy on The Cover of The SHOUT album DEVO 1984 is The son of Timothy Leary !
And on The We ALL DEVO tape or DVD Timothy Leary plays Doctor Byirdfood while hes in The
Giant Computer Keyboard The Fair light !
People just didn't want to understand Devo. Their lyrics were clear and to the point. Made a lot of people nervous.
Joe Macki said "Plain talk is just scary!" He's right!
Gotta wonder why Jesus talked in parables...
People just weren't ready to whip it and then whip it good after that 😞
That’s their (the people’s) problem. They’re missing out. When art is created by the artist and shared with others, how they interpret/receive it is on them.
@@bitzofdataz yep. And sometimes we NEED plain talk to get us scared. Because sometimes its the only way we’ll get the point or take action.
This is one of Devo's best, but that really isn't fair to how profound, and creative their output was. I always liked how they put their visual image, and their songs together which shows how much they loved their art. Devo was so different than everyone else, and always will be one of my favorite bands.
Hands down my favorite Devo music vid ever!
One of my favorite Devo songs and also one of the first videos that made an indelible impression on me as a kid. Love the country-ish guitar solo as well. Another juxtaposition in the sone missed by many people.
