That opening booming metallic pulse is *still* one of the greatest, most unique drum sounds ever. In a way it's surprising that it didn't become as much a feature of later records the way the Phil Collins' gated reverb drum sound from around the same time did.
Probably because they used a fairly obscure and unique synthesizer for it, I recall Mark saying that the drum beat was the only damned thing they were able to get out of it that they considered worthwhile.

Many bands I've listened to in the late 70s and they could fill up a few pages if I listed them all. I'm 58 now and two bands I keep going to when driving and just want to listen to some cool music and they are the B-52s and DEVO!
One of the best parts of this vid was seeing all those cool skateboards from that past. Oh how I miss my Logan Earth Ski with the Bennett Trucks. Missed it so much I bought the Gravity re-issue Logan with some Tracker Trucks. I ride it from time to time busting some DEVO on tape with my old walkman. The only thing missing is the same skill and ability to ride like I did back then.
