This tournament should be remembered a lot more. The way that Randy is like “I’ve never seen this before” when referring to 2 handed bowling is crazy looking back on it now
Whether you either think that Pete is a superstar or a jerk he's a human being who is obviously fiercely competitive, has set extremely high bowling expectations for himself and is trying to maintain his "superstar" status as one the VERY TOP bowlers in the world. He's a very good person actually. He's growing as a human being and willing to learn new things like all of us as people should. He's in the spotlight at times because of his notariety. And, we all wish we could take back some of the really dumb things we've done in the past. Yet, as people, we try to forgive ourselves, learn and have integrity. Which Pete does. And, OMG. 37 TITLES. 106 accumulative PBA & PBA50 TITLES! 10 MAJORS. HONORED INTO THE PBA HALL OF FAME. PETE WEBER had the dedication & confidence to be an elite superstar AND HE PROVED IT.
I always thought Pete's best US Open win was the infamous 2012 one. He ran the ladder, each match went down to the 9th/10th frame. Pete always made those shots when he needed them. Was great to watch. My favorite Weber appearance was the 2001 Greater Louisville Open win when he beat Michael Haugen Jr. 289-279. An absolute classic.
Obviously, Pete Weber has a PBA career record that SPEAKS VOLUMES. He does get animated at times which is actually great for both professional bowling and the bowling industry. Everyone has a perception of other people. Most people don't really know people until they have enough facts or reliable information. As human beings, we all judge people and situations. Yet, is it fair to harshly judge someone because of YOUR PERCEPTIONS? I've known quite a bit about Weber since he was 16 yrs. old when he was bowling in junior archway tournaments in St.Louis. He's always been kind of an "edgy guy". Like most people, he's a nice guy most of the time. He's actually a good sport when he doesn't win even though he is naturally disappointed. He does have a "like or dislike" personality. People have to remember that there is not any guarantee of a sizeable paycheck when bowling against the best bowlers in the world. He started his career with a lot of determination to "follow in his fathers footsteps". Then, he had some personal problems and overcame those. Meanwhile he just kept winning titles and as a public sports figure he behaved well most of the time. And, he realizes that he made some mistakes. He learned from those mistakes as he became older & wiser. Anytime someone is controversial there will be critics. He doesn't mind at all if some fans don't pull for him to win. Just treat him fairly like any professional bowler deserves. His Mom & Dad were a great emotional support system. What Pete Weber does in his personal life regarding his marriage is HIS BUSINESS. It isn't fair to medle in a persons personal affairs. His Dad told him when he was a teenager to "be Pete. And always be Pete". And he is just that. He's authentic. Although, like some other bowlers he does have some ham in him. That color & flair helps the PBA attract viewers too. He doesn't go over the line and be rood to people. It certainly seems to me that some people get caught up with ridicule to the point to where they don't see the good in people. Pete isn't some bad guy just because he's not prim & proper like his Dad always was. He had that "bad boy" label put on him because he stands out as a phenomenally great bowler with some colorful antics. He might not ALWAYS conduct himself in a way that reflects his true personality and he knows that. He's working on that. He does have good sportsmanship even when he doesn't win. And yeah. he's Pete alright. Controversial. Even when he was first on the tour, there were a few people that actually didn't like him at all. One of them stated, "He's not like his father. Doesn't have the composure. He'll never make it". Pete proved those people to be completed wrong. It wasn't long after that when he publicly stated those exact comments of a few others and replied, "Yeah. Well. Right here. Because I am making it. AND, he wasn't mad or necessarily resentful when he replied. That's just how he felt. He doesn't go to somebodys place of work and interfere with them making a living. Yet. Some people harshly judge without knowing who he truly is as a person. He doesn't sign autographs just because he has to. He gives back to bowling fans because he's grateful to have the opportunity to make a great living bowling which can be VERY difficult. Some people are likely just envious of that. He's s just has that "moxy" that some people love and some people hate. I give him lots of credit for not allowing himself to get distracted with insults and focus on winning PBA TITLES while trying to improve his image as best he can. Don't expect him to be Dick Weber. Nobody has ever been that good of an ambassador to bowling. His peers respect him and he actually gets along good with almost everyone. Just don't treat him unfairly when he's bowling. Root for his opponent in a match if ya' want. He doesn't mind. EVERY SINGLE PERSON HAS PEOPLE THAT THEY LIKE AND DON'T LIKE. THE PBA ENJOYS PETE WEBER JUST LIKE THEY LIKE ALL OF THE BOWLERS ON THE PBA TOUR.
I remember watching this and seeing Osku and saying "holy sh1t that looks cool, I need to try throwing it that way!" But I didn't and now I regret it. If I went two handed 20 years ago, this man would be making presentations about me.
He's a prime time a**hole he's a legend in his own mind & I've never seen anyone wear sunglasses while indoors & think he's cool....this guy is the polar opposite of cool especially seeing as he's prone to beeing grumpy with the audience even though they've done nothing wrong....
I bowled the us open in 2004. He skipped the practice session cause he said he wasn't feeling good, then went on to win. He is such a great guy!!! Never had a bad moment with him!!! Mad respect!!
I am not really offended by Pete Weber as much as I find him corny. It's pretty cringe trying to be "an edgy bad boy" in what is essentially a dad sport. It also seems like he just sort of casually tossed Tracy Weber aside after basically making her his personal tour slave for over a decade.
Well when you think about it, he kind of has reasons to act that way. Remember, he had a crippling cocaine addiction from 1982 to 1984, which he recovered from, but at the same time, he's a competitor living in the shadow of his dead parents (one of which was a founding member of the PBA) and the hopelessness of his THREE failed marriages. If anything his behavior is excusable, even if it was just to get more viewers for the PBA when he started doing what he did back in 1997-1998 or so.
