GLASS BUTTES! Where you can collect 25 lbs of Obsidian a day! It's EVERYWHERE

I was so excited to share this location with you that I passed along some information that is not correct. I apologize! This is NOT the only location in Oregon that you can legally collect 0bsian. Please check rules in the area you are in. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU KNOW WHERE YOU CAN LEGALLY COLLECT obsidian as some rules apply in certain areas. We were so excited to find Glass Buttes as we could collect 25lbs a day/250lbs a year without a permit. Happy Hunting

Nice video of Glass Buttes. However, there are many more places you can collect obsidian on Federal public land in Oregon. In fact, there are over 1,500 identified and cataloged obsidian sources. You can pick up obsidian for personal use anywhere on Federal public land that is not specifically closed to rockhounding.. Same annual and daily limits.

The "cool pattern" that Carrie said looks like waves in conchoidal fracture. Obsidian is pure silica (SiO2) and the bonding between Si and O is quite strong. Because the bonds are strong in all directions, there's no preferred direction or "cleavage" along which the mineral (or in this case, rock) is easy to break. That condition is what gives rise to the beautiful conchoidal fracture you see in obsidian. It's also seen in the mineral quartz, along broken surfaces, as quartz is also pure silica. Great video!

A couple of corrections. Silicate and oxygen are what are known as as elements. SiO2 is a mineral (normally) and is silicate bonded to oxygen not pure silicate.
Secondary obsidian is actually what is known as a mineraloid because of its amorphous atomic structure. Which is what gives it, its signature black color. The difference between ordinary obsidian, quartz, and chalcedony is atomic structure.

Very interesting video. As far as leaving, sometimes there is no key reason, just a gut feeling. We ALWAYS listen to that and respect each other enough to listen to each others. So good for you for leaving! Sweet finds. We have found that, but not known what it was!
As for being in a Juniper and Sage area, oh my! The smells are amazing. We love it.

Still catching up on your videos (I was a month or so behind). Yes, listen to that inner feeling. When its time to go, its time to leave. We have had that happen to us a couple of times and we are SO glad we listened to it. We later found out there were reasons why we were to leave at that place at that particular time. Sometimes its for safety, other times its because you'll miss something important at some other place.

Beautiful red/black volcanic glass. I’m sure you know about Glass Mountain area near Mammoth Lakes, CA; lots of black obsidian and no regulation on collecting that I’m aware of.

Cool video. I don’t know anything about rocks 😂. What I have seen first hand is Trinitite. We were told don’t take any or you’ll go to jail 🤔 so I just looked at it and touched it some. It’s still hot ☢️ too. Looks like a great place to boondock though. Maybe rocks could be a hobby I get when I retire 🤷🏼‍♂️.
