Radiation heals ghouls. That's why he was able to drink the dirty irradiated water with no ill effects.
Yeah it heals them, but it's still not good for them. It causes them to go feral faster.

A lot of electrical things are on Vault 32 because it's all powered off a nuclear reactor, and will basically just keep going until someone turns it off or it breaks due to lack of maintenance.
Cooper wasn't being particularly careful with the vials because he was high as a kite at that point. :)
Given that the three vaults are basically on top of each other, they might have a connected electric grid, too. They could potentially "borrow" power from one another as an emergency backup.
As for why it lasts, the corporations in the Fallout universe are pretty awful, but one thing they never came up with was planned obsolescence (Except when it comes to civilization as a whole). Just like in the 1950s, when they built something, it was built to last. And just like in the '50s, when they were super-excited about preservatives and additives and packaged foods, that also was perfected in the Fallout universe (where perfected does not imply healthy). Those deviled eggs Lucy was eating were in all likelihood from a pre-war stash, and over 200 years old.
3:11 Nah, I think it was both. There's the pragmatism in eating him, but you can see the empathy and pain on his face as Roger tells his story. I think the eating and everything was for Lucy's benefit, that he is trying to harden her away from what reminds him of his past life.😊
Agreed. Mercy kill, but then he's meat and why let meat go to waste? I have wondered if he'd have made the same choice if Lucy wasn't there though. I do get a bit of a trollish vibe from him. Having said that, yeah he probably would have done the same thing. He goes about it like someone who has a routine until Lucy interrupts.

Also Steph is originally from Vault 31, where Lucy's father is from.
maximus is just more relatable, i cannot see myself being a ghoul or a lucy.
Sadly, I think its pretty evident that most people would end up closer to being like the ghoul than either of the other two. And I also say I relate more to ghoul because most of his story is about his past regrets and survival instead of idealism or vindictiveness.

Im totally cool with no Max this episode. I love hearing Mat Berrys voice from the Snip Snip, hes my favorite actor from "What We Do In The Shadows". Is "cousin stuff" worse that "pregnant water breaking stuff". Also I would have to go bear foot instead of one shoe.

Norm is really the 4th main character of the show. He didn't get a title card, but his part of the story is *phenomenal* as is his character arc. Norm's probably my favorite character in the show currently.
Also, the showrunners did a great job of following character creation from the Fallout games to make the main characters. for people familiar with the games, you can almost guess their stats and skills. There's an almost 100% chance that Maximus has the "Idiot Savant" perk from the games. :D

@@HannaHsOverInvested it's very visible episode 1 when we meet Lucy. in the game, players can choose 3 skills that receive boosts during character creation, and Lucy mentions 3 things she's better doing at during her marriage interview - a direct nod to that and lets us know her specialties.
I saw a behind the scenes that said that it started out taking 3 hours to put the make up on Walton Goggin's then they got it down to 1 hour
1 hour is okay. 3 hours is tough
The finger was a cybernetic prosthetic, not just some unfortunate person's severed digit. It just LOOKED nasty and rotted.

I love how people dont like Maximus, yet when the ghoul sells Lucy to an organ dealership they still love him. Not judging just an observation
Max is hard for me because he reminds me of me when I was 10, and homeschooled out in the woods, and very book-smart so I knew I was right about everything, and I practiced karate punches and kicks from library books, and every time I interacted with other children besides the homeschooled neighbors who lived 2 miles down the road or with my cousins I got in a fight and got beat up. Sometimes the cousins too lol.
I'm certain that Max has an an interesting journey ahead. But since he's not wherever he'll end up yet, he currently feels really out of place. Fortunately for the character he doesn't have to carry the show because he's got two really strong characters who can do that until he's ready to stand on his own. I feel like we would normally meet a character like him when he's where he'll probably be in season 3 and more sure of himself. (Trying to avoid spoilers here) he's basically a child of an abusive family, and he's having to figure out his relationship with that family. If he fails with them, maybe he'll strike out on his own and cut himself off, or if he finds himself backsliding or being welcomed by them maybe he'll commit to that abusive family even more strongly.

I think he'll become an antagonist, committing to the brotherhood since he's now likely to have a home there, and since Dane believes there's no possibility of leaving them and that no place is safe. At the same time, he's seen the vaults from the inside, and I kinda wonder if having sampled life in Vault 4 if he might not lead the Brotherhood to take a more active interest in the vaults too. Also, since Hank says they are a generation away from recolonizing, I wonder if we might see a Vault-Tec vs BoS war later on in the show. Especially since he knows Vault-Tec nuked Shady Sands.
I think it's because, narratively speaking, someone being self-aware and evil is more morally acceptable than someone who thinks is good but is actually evil. Since the age of Ancient Greek tragedies, self-awareness was the greatest redeemer. You could be the worst person in the story, but if you realised how terrible you were, the audience were quick to forgive you.
The ghoul is interesting, Max is annoying.
Just got back from watching the Twitch VOD. Watching (relatively) new gamers play is a great study in game design and level design. I know it wasn't always obvious while playing, but if you go back and watch it, you might notice some "subtle" in-game direction, like an illuminated sign pointing in the direction to go, or climbing surfaces being painted red.
It's actually become an interesting debate in the gaming community about how and when use of color is appropriate. Yellow has become a really popular color - climbable surfaces are marked with yellow paint - but some people find it immersion-breaking to be climbing a cliffside in the middle of the isolated wilderness, and the climbable edges are painted as if it were a common climbing route, a climbing superhighway. It's a cool topic to dive into if you want to learn more about game design and level design, just search something like "video games yellow paint", and you'll get tons of results.
Episode 4 was a pivotal moment, we've established the lore & the stakes, now it's time to ride that train till it pays off BIG!
A staple of the Fallout games, since the very beginning, is that most Vaults were actually assorted experiments. Some vaults were control vaults, and work completely normally. Others have absurd requirements, like forcing the denizens to sacrifice one of their members every year else everyone in the vault dies, or experiments on cryogenics, or the limits of sustaining a population via cloning.
Fans of the games will hear that Vault 32's records are inaccessible and that whatever failure happened before the raiders arrived, and assume that this was an experiment Vault. Maybe the Vaults 31, 32, and 33 are collectively one experiment.
One fan theory is that the Vault-Tek vaults may be experiments to see what conditions untrained people might tolerate aboard a spaceship. This is not as crazy as it sounds, as every game has included aliens in some capacity. They could be meant as a gag or an Easter egg, but I don't know if the creators have ever confirmed or denied.
Yes the Vault story takes a while to cook and Maximus is just outside of likeable. But Cooper's past and the Ghoul are never a disappointment.
Love the reactions, you always have the courage to give an honest genuine reaction and not just pander the audience. Big respect for that!
I’ve been lurking in the comments on these videos and some of the so called “refences” to the games is laughable. The one that comes to mind is the you mentioned that you feel like we are jumping around in the first episode without much reference to space and time, which I agree the writers rocket you into the story and it is jarring. But someone said that is a reference to in game fast travel.. no. Just no.
Joking aside I did want to bring something up to you that is core to Fallout that I believe the writers incorporated nicely to the characters in the show. Fallout is a role playing game and just like other popular rpgs, like Dungeons and Dragons, all characters have base stats that determine how interact with the world i. Fallout that is called S.P.E.C.I.A.L. Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck these are all the categories characters can assign attribute points; the higher the value the more proficient and low values can be a liability.
The writers seem very conscious of this for example Lucy is very book smart and she constantly seems to just be at the right place at the right time. These qualities are associated with Intelligence and Luck in the game. Just something to look out for with characters in the show.

6:32 my thought is it's in the same sphere as the logic of animals actually mutating from radiation and stuff ---- The Nuclear Revolution Fallout-Earth went through created some massively fantastical technologies. Even a Stimpak itself, a liquid that can just start to heal you, gives precedence that there is very advanced medical care available.
Secondly, the Mr. Handy, this robot Snip-Snip, is from pre-war. The healing tech would probably still be in-tact. I think thhe energy adhesion used to connect the finger must also stimulate nerve and vein connection/production. It definitely requires a bit of forced suspension of disbelief to prevent the ludonarrative dissonance. But I think there's enough of a precedence to make it work.

If you ever what to know why "how is that still on?" the answer is that in the Fallout world, fusion tech advanced very far. To the point of miniaturization. A bunch of things are still running on residual nuclear power. So they advanced in more in power technology instead of information technology like our world has.
I love the norm character I agree with some you tubers that he is the show unofficial forth character.

I spread out watching it like one episode per couple days thanks for Life Stuff, and know exactly how you feel aboutthe Vault 32 Mystery. :D
It's ok if sometimes an important character isn't likeable, as long as there are some who are. I think we're going to find that Max ends up hurting "the people that hurt him", and it may or may not end up with him living happily ever after. I also think that Max knows, as do we (at least suspect) that those people include the Brotherhood.
I cant say whether or not youll end up liking Maximus, but youll definitely understand him a bit better. He's my least favorite of the 3 as well but he's up against pretty stiff competition. The Ghoul is way cooler and Lucy is way more relatable so it puts max in an awkward spot from the audience's perspective. I do like him though because he gives us the perspective of a fairly regular person from the surface (as opposed to a 200+ year old irradiated zombie cowboy bounty hunter). He's pretty civilized by nuclear wasteland standards and unlike Lucy and Cooper he doesnt have a clear cut goal, which gives him a lot of options, just like if you yourself were playing the game (or I guess it gives the writers plenty of options for what they want his goal to be, but still)

i dont understand why people are so untrusting of Maximus, though i suppose that was really caked into the narrative... i trusted Max, though. as nervous as he was, he sounded honest (to me) when saying he didn't do it. i find his rage oddly satisfying, and his stupidity very relatable, he turned out to be a character i really loved despite his faults :)
watching reactions, i see a whole new side of him. it was hard to not get mad when people dislike him but, looking back, i see it LMAO he's really hard-headed and kind of strange
You know I wonder how evil the ghoul really is… cause he shot the one ghoul while he was thinking happy thoughts. He poured his water out in front of Lucy, but later revealed it was irradiated to hell. He cut her finger off, but then sent her to a place where the robot gave her one back.
It’s like he’s just being petty while not actually starting any bad stuff…
He killed the dog but brought it back to track the head, self defense then a cleverly veiled good deed.

What's to hate about Max? He's a guy that's had the shitty end of the stick all of his life. Even the only people he now considers family mistreats him. He has only one true friend in the world. In many ways he's as naive as Lucy, at his heart he's still that sweet little boy that climbed out of a refrigerator to find everyone he has known is dead, and he'll do anything to hold onto the few bits of family that he can call his own. To this point Max hasn't been proven to have done a selfish thing in his life. The only questionable thing he's done is allow Titus to die. But Titus was completely unworthy, and was about to lie to the Brotherhood about Max, which would have gotten Max killed. As opposed to Lucy, who cut off the head of a dead man, not to save her life, but to find her father. Whereas the Ghoul, for all of his mystery, color, coolness, and extravagance, has to this point shown himself to be a selfish, heartless, cold blooded opportunist.
Some people struggle to understand that you can (and should) be critical of the things you enjoy.
You once mentioned "too convenient". As an author, you're probably looking at that the wrong way, as a well written book or very well written screenplay. But since this is based in a role playing game (or before that, a table top role playing game), I think the right approach is looking at it from the point of view of an RPG game master (or dungeon master) telling his long prepared story. He will do everything possible (incl "meeting and detection conveniences") to make sure his campaign is picked up and started on, or risk losing days to months of preparation. For those of us who threw dice back in the day, this "too convenient" style of storytelling makes all the sense in the world. There are several times during the show I feel this is done deliberately, but it might not be everyone's cup of tea.

*The* Ghoul is extremely ruthless after surviving 200+ years in the Wasteland, by necessity to stay alive, but you get hints of his Humanity when he healed the dog and giving Rodger a merciful end while thinking of happier times (and if you look close you can see the regret in The Ghoul's eyes at that) It's subtle but very well done IMHO :)
Ghouls are resistant to many drugs, their strange healing factor doesn't work on parts of their skin, nervous system or brain so over time they go mad (feral and become stronger/faster than Humans). Stimulus seems to delay this mental decay, such as a personal goal, possibly drugs etc so if he has the game Perk that reduces drug addiction that would make a lot of sense.
My problem with Maximus is that its not clear if he sabotaged Dane's (spelling?) rise through the ranks to Squire by putting the razor blades in her boots or not. If he did, then he's a scumbag in my opinion.
I don't care about him lying to the Brotherhood or to Thaddeus, but that first episode made me dislike him and that hasn't really changed. I hope it does, I wanna like him. Seems like he had it rough but he seems shady to me and its not how I play the game myself.
That said Titus was a major d--khead and deserved to die.

Originally ghouls make up took up to 6-8 hours but later on they used cgi for the nose and some other details to cut make up time to 1,5-2 hours
