  • A newcomer's perspective on the Amazon Prime Fallout television series. Enter the nuclear wasteland and watch a rundown of the first episode as we give our noob opinions. Get ready for Vaults⚙️, Ghouls🧟‍♂️, and Nuka-Cola🥤.
    As viewers unfamiliar with the rich world of Fallout, we reflect on the show without that juicy, prior knowledge. Lots of great world-building, set and prop design, story-telling, and filmmaking in this first foray into Fallout for the masses. 🚨 Obviously episode 1 spoilers ahead! 🚨
    Would love to hear what ya'll fellow newbies and game vets alike think about the show! 💬
    Highlights! ...
    🏆 Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins, and Aaron Clifton Moten are excellent. Casting overall is great.
    🏆 The set design and props are top notch. IO wants (to be) a Pip-Boy!
    🏆 Story set-up for those new to Fallout is great. I'm sure fans of the game will love all the attention to detail, too.
    I think it's gonna be a real winner! (insert VaultBoyThumbsUp.jpg)
    Thanks4Watching!

    I'm curious to hear what everyone else thinks! Both newcomers and those that've played the games, does the show deliver?

    • @Lordoftheapes79
      @Lordoftheapes79 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yes.

    • @Moesaurus
      @Moesaurus หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It definitely does, imo. I rank it close to The Last of Us adaptation! I've seen people rank it above even, due to the fact that the story and characters are mostly new, while The Last of Us could rely heavily on an already spectacular script.
      Writing-wise I think they made it exciting to new watchers as well as fans, to fans because of the references, and to new people because of the way these references are inserted, almost like little clues for you to understand the universe but with a satisfying explanation later, where the viewer can feel smart for putting things together a bit earlier.
      There are some pacing flaws and some parts that are purely for flavor, but I think overall it's a great show and I'm looking forward to the next season.
      Having played the games I feel like I can theorize more, and that's probably why a lot of people have started the games after finishing the TV show. It reminds me a lot of when WestWorld was ongoing and the online community got busy with it.
      One fun thing about the making of it is that they bought/commissioned props from Cosplayers and fans, so you know there's a lot of love in the details that we see.

    • @legitimatech
      @legitimatech  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Moesaurus Woah, that's awesome about the props from cosplayers! I Didn't know that. Props to them (pun obviously intended). I was curious whether the choice to release it all at once vs weekly had anything to do with the existing fan base and whether it might be hard to keep things spoiler-free when newcomers might be flooded with existing-fan commentary between episodes? Though, arguably just as hard to do with a binge release. 🤷‍♂

    • @Moesaurus
      @Moesaurus หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@legitimatech hm, I could only theorize about that..
      Considering The Last of Us had a known story and was still released on a weekly basis, maybe they weren't sure about Fallout's reception and decided to go with that because it's easier to keep people watching something unknown if they binge.
      My partner knew nothing of Fallout and felt like some parts were really cool, but some parts were a little confusing. It took episode two to get them fully engaged with it. Should also be taken into account that they're not into things that look too hopeless, so a different audience.
      As for the spoiler part, I think anything that can be spoiled by game knowledge either needs way too much explanation (gives people time to run away) or isn't such a game changer (ex: explaining how items work) or are slightly different from the games and better explained on the show itself 🤔

      I've played every game except for Brotherhood Of Steel and Tactics. The show most definitely delivers. The amount of references alone is enough to sell me. Add in the character building, the sets, the aesthetic, and the fact that I can recognize character builds, perks, Etc, from the games, and the visual storytelling is all on par? Best video game to live action adaptation ever. That scene in the house where the family took cyanide when the bombs dropped... 100% pure Fallout environmental storytelling.

      @@enderbro1550I'm not putting him down, I'm just answering your question as to why he doesn't have a lot of views. He didn't react to the show at all. I mean, he didn't laugh at any of the funny parts, react when people got killed, etc. I'm pretty sure he didn't hear Muldaver tell Lucy that she looked like her mother. Which was a big moment. He had a flat affect throughout. People watch reactors to see their reactions. People want to see others enjoy the show as much as they did. They want to re-live their first time watching the show vicariously through the reactor. It's like when you ask a friend to watch one of your favorite movies. You want them to enjoy it just as much as you. You would be disappointed if they talked the entire movie and didn't really get anything that happened.

    Ghouls are a mutation in the Fallout world: some Humans when exposed to severe radiation don't die but mutate thanks to a quirk of their genetics.
    Basically they don't age and they can heal much better than Humans, are immune to radiation and resistant to some drugs, but...this healing factor doesn't work on parts of their skin or brain/nervous system.
    So they can live for centuries, but eventually most suffer severe mental break down and basically become sort of mindless zombies: extremely strong, fast and tough, known as "feral ghouls".
    Keeping their minds focused on tasks/stimulated, or avoiding excessive radiation seems to reduce the risk of going "feral"

    Welcome to the wasteland! Gameplayer here, and the feeling I got while watching this was like a passive-view version of playing Fallout - quite literally everything you see, so many of the actions and behaviors like Lucy using a Stimpak to heal from stabbing, the Junk Jet (which can shoot just about anything), and the factions themselves that inhabit the world. It lives up to the feeling of the Fallout series of games while creating an entirely new but Lore-dependent exploration of the universe with its story. As a veteran to the world, I was impressed with the efforts made to fairly naturally bring newcomers up to speed with the nature of things, too.

    This is so well done! It’s always cool to find a new channel through things like this, and I hope you continue this show on the channel! Here are a few (non-spoiler) important bits of lore they either didn’t say in the show or were easy to miss that help everything else make a bit more sense:
    - After WW2, microprocessors, transistors, and other important technology were simply never invented in the world of Fallout, so their computer systems are way behind where you might expect. Instead, nuclear technology was further developed and improved so their vehicles, robots, and much of the other tech they use is nuclear-powered. (That also answers why the soda is called ‘Nuka-Cola’)
    - The aesthetics of most things are 1950’s influenced not because the story takes place in the 50’s (the first scene when the bombs drop is in October 2077) but because - similar to computer technology - the culture mostly stayed the same for 100 years. The major changes were race relations and views about sex and sexuality.
    - The main world conflict when the bombs dropped in 2077 was between the USA and China; when they talk about negotiations those are the major powers involved.

      @@legitimatech yeah, look up the Wikipedia page for the Operation Crossroads nuclear tests, specifically the cake. And the look in the eyes of the officers cutting it is just chilling. I showed my mom during a discussion of Dr Strangelove and she thought it was like something made up by fans or the like and she was shocked that it was a real thing.
      I feel like some of the stuff shown in Fallout would come across as exaggerated to modern audiences who are so removed from the red scare. Watching it as the child of cold war red scare rightwingers, there's a dark underbelly of truth to the crazy parts of the show. Like they took me and my brother to counterprotest a peace demonstration in the 80s. My dad would shout "commie!" at the TV unironically, stringing the epithet together with various other expletives. At least he thought it was unironic but when he was yelling at the ref of a basketball game who made a call he didn't like it was very ironic to me.

    Nicely done reaction, very original format which makes it feel just a little bit different.
    Fallout is a set of games where you (as the protagonist) are someone new in each game, exploring new stories, new parts of the world. They really leant into that here, an original story that has the aesthetic, vibe and dark comedy and violence of each of the games but they can tell whatever story they want, with whatever characters they dream up. It gives it a really fresh feel as a long time player of the games. I know the world, I know the factions, I know the vibe but I was sitting here just like you having no idea where they would take it. They absolutely nailed it but tell a story that works for TV, rather than trying to turn a game plotline into TV. It's awesome.

    The show is one of if not the best game to screen things I've ever seen. Not that it follows any of the prior games storylines, each are different. But the setting, the tone, little details, music, it all just works. And the minute the season ended, I wanted more. You're in for a good ride.
    Also, the only reaction video to this series I've seen so far to mention the actor from Mr Robot (Michael Cristofer, who was Phillip Price on that). He absolutely killed that role, in a cast of amazing people, and one of the best series start to finish I've ever watched.

    • @legitimatech
      @legitimatech  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm surprised by that because, yeah, he was v.good! I've loved the casting in Fallout thus far. Mr. Robot, too, of course. Mr. Robot was able one of those rare shows that was able to go off the rails and still stick the landing every time.

    3:10 You can have one of those pip-boys (that's what they're called). The studio makes real-life replicas, some models you can even put your phone inside to make it functional.
    Also good job spotting this is NOT steampunk, I hate it when people apply that term incorrectly. The appropriate term for this aesthetic is atompunk.
    9:05 In the game's timeline the Great war occurred in 2077, Nuka-cola was created in 2044. The name was probably chosen due to America's fascination with nuclear power.
    Fans are divided on this show. A lot of them are blown away that someone finally made a good video game adaptation and love the Ghoul's performance. Others point out that the characters aren't as well written nor the story as sensical as people seem to think they are and I tend to agree.
    The writers also tweaked a lot of things from the games in this show, like the Brotherhood's almost cult-like overtones and the rules about ghouls. Also some apparently big changes to the timeline, some of which mean that some factions no-longer make sense.
    Personally as someone who's played a lot of Fallout, I'm not liking the show that much. They did a great job of recreating various props and settings from the game, even recreating the sensations of playing the games. Like finding skeletons out in the wastes and figuring out how they died, or exploring a vault and learning it's dark secrets. But I'd say this show is actually a lot darker then the games.
    In the show all the factions are barbarians, ruthless criminals or extremists. And none of the individual characters are what you'd call a good person. The show heavily pushes the notion that people will throw away morality to survive.
    But it's not that bad in the game. There are plenty of honest and decent people living in this post apocalyptic world and you can usually find people the community will call the good guys.

    • @legitimatech
      @legitimatech  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for this rundown! Awesome that they've got the Pip Boys available (smart to make it a phone drop-in design). And yeah, i think I'm settling on Atom-Punk as you and others have pointed out and Retro-Futurism. And I like that there is some good to be found in this post apocalypse (even if only in game). The second episode where we come across the first small town/bazaar felt like it sort of suggested the presence of normal folk/good people.

    You were mentioning steam punk as a similar aesthetic and what this would be called. Ive heard it called nuclear punk. The Nuka Cola would have been part of a society that worshipped/embraced so ultimately of nuclear powered everything that this society had. I see it as if the 50s tech advanced but never evolved like ours did.

      I think your format might work better as a breakdown instead of a reaction. That is prewatch the show. Then you could tie some of your great insights in with what's happening plot wise. Because absolutely no other TH-camr is noticing or discussing the things you do (e.g. use of 35 mm film stock for the intro. That's brilliant!)

    • @mikegilgenbach4840

      My take is this. Do the first time reaction, allowing the show to speak to you while consuming whats going on. Then follow it with your breakdown after digesting it. Whimsory does this. I rather enjoy that structure. It gives both, people who dont like interrupted show reactions and those who like in depth discusion, what they want.
