I have been wanting an electribe for years, but I just could never justify buying one with its current workflow and features.
Initially I was hoping Korg would eventually pick up where they left off and make an Electribe 3, a worthy successor of the original. But we all kinda know thats never going to happen... unfortunately.

@@KCNARF29the hardware is supposedly exactly the same in the red and the blue one, so with the hacktribe installed, it should have exactly the same features, regardless of color. All oscillators and all sampler capability.
I've heard that hacktribe is somewhat heavy on the processor so expect the electric to become slower. How much is hard to say. I haven't installed it yet.
I have the red one. Bought it as a dedicated hardware sampler, and because I couldn't afford something like a digitakt. but I instantly got intrigued by the (limited) synth functions.
The sound is very good actually and you can create some mean earth-shattering sub bass kicks. The sampling workflow is confusing though. It is very easy to loose all your hard work in a heartbeat.

Great video! A really fair and nuanced breakdown of the pros and cons of the E2 - pretty much mirroring my whole experience with it! Despite all of its little shortcomings and quirks, I have yet to find a groovebox that is as FUN and flow-inducing as my E2. I think it's a combination of the limitations, the easily-accessible sound design tools, the shortcuts and lack of menu-diving (at least, the way I use it, I rarely have to delve into the more fiddly menus), and the lack of presets - they all encourage me to just sit down and make something without getting in my own way. As much as I love the mature features of Elektron and Roland grooveboxes I've used, none of them have matched this little blue beast in terms of sheer enjoyment and play.

I think you pretty much just nailed everything I thought about the Electribe 2.
Except the XY / Kaoss pad, I really like that for certain things. It's not as good as an actual Kaoss pad, but it pretty close. Plus, if you use it as an arpeggiator and mess with the arpeggiator pattens while using drums, you can come up with some quite interesting fills etc.
You didn't really comment much on the sequencing. Yes, it's only 4 measures (64 steps), but if you use it to sequence Korg Volcas, for example, you can quadruple a Volcas sequence length. It would be nice if you could reassign the pads to different MIDI channels (pad 1 is MIDI 1, pad 2 MIDI 2 etc and you can't change that), but as you mentioned that simplicity is what makes the Electribe 2 such an immediate and fun instrument to use.
I still use mine a lot more that my more expensive gear.
Because it's just fun. Like, really, fun!

The total lack of updates from Korg for the past 8 years is tragic. So many electribe users being ignored. Meanwhile Novation updated the Circuit a bunch of times, Roland too with the MC101 and 707. If they updated the firmware I'd be right there (or if they released a new Electribe) but the current ones just feel outdated and annoy me

      Exactly this.
Such a poor decision of Korg to abandon the Electribe community. I would have loved to get one, but settled on the Circuit duo instead. Which is not only alot cheaper, but also feels way more alive and intuitive to operate.
Circuit rhythm especially has been treating me well, but I never clicked with the synth engines on the OG/Tracks. For that reason I was hoping forever for Korg to release an Electribe 3, but it definately seems like they lost all interest in this amazing product. Such a shame.

@@7an7ara seriously. What would you want to see added/fixed that isn't addressed by the Hacktribe firmware? Or are you asking for updates for the sake of it? Maybe they should introduce a few bugs to it so they can release more updates? The Electribe is far from being perfect and I hate Korg drivers on Windows, but the firmware does not need any update. The lack of updates is a common but utterly worthless argument when there is nothing to fix in the firmware, especially when you have alternative firmwares available.

I would recommend it if the 4Bar limit is not an issue for you. It makes a great Dawless Centerpiece then. You can sequence a lot of additional devices with 16 Midi Channels. I mainly use it for getting an Idea running while jamming Dawless and then move on later into the Daw and refine it to a Track. The immediate / hands on experience the Electribe provides is very inspiring.

If you use it as a composer for long sequences of music instead of a looper for zombie tekno muzak, the 4 bars allow you to get more variation in your composition. You can change things every 4 bars instead of every 8.

I own the gray version of the Electribe 2 myself, and the one thing that is lacking is the sounds they put on the unit itself. There are some sounds that are really good and usable, and there are sounds that are just not that great, but overall it is a nice little unit, but the kicks and the instrument sounds could have been a lot better. Some of them are usable, some of them of just not good, but I guess that's with every hardware drum machine synth that you get today.
The one thing that makes it great is it's ease of use, and another thing, it doesn't have an Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release, it's just an Attack and Decay/Release together, which if Korg would have simply put individual ADSR for each sound/part, it would have made all the difference. Overall, I give this unit a 3.7 out of 5. You can definitely make some great music on here if you put the time into your craft 🌗

My two very old ES1 Electribe Samplers still work great.
I recently nabbed an ES2 Sampler for $340.00 via some Anazon seller, and it is fantastic! Easy to use... the sounds are quality, not groundbreaking... but solid for many applications!
I have found myself using the ES2 as a supplemental instrument, to add different elements to a more established rhythm that I might be working on. In this manner, I'll sync it to my Korg Drumlogue or Roland SH4d to add some extra layers.
Between the Korg Electribe Sampler ES2, the Drumlogue and the Roland SH4d, I find I am able to accomplish complete tracks that 100% rival anything I create via a DAW like Ableton... unless I want some longer speech clips happening during the song. In the event I wish to use a longer sample of some type of speech or conversation, then I import the WAV file to the Polyend Play because it has several gigs of storage, and ultimately has much greater sampling-manipulation capabilities than any of my Electribes.
But I think that most people out there largely work on tracks that do not include long soliloquies/rants happening throughout the composition. For such song creation, the Electribe E2 is very useful.

The 707 solves all the cons you listed here: It has 128 note polyphony, full ADSR envelopes, a sampler, and a patterln length of 128 steps, I'll never sell my Electribe 2, but the MC-707 kicks its ass and is the best groovebox in my humble opinion. As a groovebox fanatic, I'll continue to use both ot course, and I also recently bought a Syntakt (which also has limited polyphony and 64 steps per pattern, so the MC-707 kicks the Syntakt's ass, too).

      @BurstupTV 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Oh, if you have already been drooling over the videos, you should absolutely get an MC-707. It really is the most complete groovebox on the market. The sampler of the MC-707 can be used for both sample chopping and as a looper. The Zencore synth engine is incredibly powerful. And the MC-707 even has tons of effects and processing on each channel + even master bus FX such as compressor, tape simulation etc. It's really an amazing machine.
I love the Syntakt as well, but: it has no sampler, each track is monophonic, it has no compressor and not even a chorus effect (which the MC-707 has plenty of).

I didn't mean the notes that play, yes in Poly 1&2 you can play multiple notes. But if you have the attack and release of the envelope set to long time to create a pad sound, notice how every time you play the note it will reset to the initial value of the envelope. It is even mentioned in the manual btw

I meant if you play 1 note then add other notes, up to 4, without releasing the other then the envelope doesn't kicks in. But you're also right. Parts aren't polyphonic but paraphonic, they share the same envelope. It'san amazingpiece of hardware but not adsr ... c'mon !?@RandomNoiseMusic

A drum machine with hands on sound design of your own drums is very rare. I bought my Electribe2 a long time ago, never considered selling because there is nothing to replace it with that is better. Trouble is, you need more than just an Electribe2 for making professional sounding music. Why? 1) useless reverb. 2) stereo output. Any time you have a multi-timbral instrument it must have either or both: Top quality effects AND/OR multiple outputs for external processing. Because of the missing items I use this drum machine in addition to other drums. I have been thinking of layering the Electribe with a Arturia DrumBrute Impact for more outputs and some analog warmth.

One of the main reasons the E2 is my favorite instrument is the touch screen and I wish it was bigger. The only effect I use is the delay and the rare times I've had voice stealing I made it part of the composition. Most of my music budget goes to effects also I use 3 e2's so I have few limitations. I don't get why You don't get the X-Y pad - it's one of the very few improvements Korg's done over the EMX. And BTW IMO, the EMX/ESX SD versions are still the best iterations of electribes to this day - everything you want to know is written on the surface - no guessing shift functions, or 19 level menu diving like on E2. For a portable unit it's heavy as F - compare that to Novation Circuit. But it is battery powered and contrary to what you said E2S - sampler (the black and the red one) does have synth oscillators from the factory. Also when was Yamaha cheap in the late 90's (or ever)?🤔
E2/E2S are a departure in workflow form the on the fly playability of all previous versions. These are slanted towards production more than the previous generations - which is great if you happened to have a bunch of volcas for example 😀. Getting to know the equipment inside out is more important to the creative process than the specs. It's not an MPC or MC-707, but then again you don't pay for that.
(The new Yamaha Seqtrack looks good on paper, but requires a computer.)
