Hi All! I promised to make a tutorial on how to create a pattern from scratch on the Korg Electribe 2 and here it is. I wanted to showcase some of my most favorite tips on the Electribe 2, and use them in a way that is practical and can help you do the same with your music. Let me know what you think! Hope you will enjoy this video and that it can become useful :)
I find dmaj Is a good key to for step sequencer as a lot of dance tunes have been in that key, I'll try find them emx psych trance Vids and send a link or just type in psych trance set on electribe 1 there's some really good vids
Excellent tutorial, especially if you refuse to read the manuals. Nice tip about the arp. One of the reasons I use the E2's is the touch pad, one can actually make an entire song with just the touch pad. The only ifx I use is the delays as you can alter the sounds in other ways that won't steal voices. If you listen to the E2 on full range monitors you'll find the E2 can still compete with any digital grove box for quality of sound.
The E2 synth version gets overlooked, but it is a highly underrated synth in its own right. I use a Keystep to live play, sequence, and arpeggiate mine. When I get a sequence or arp that I like, I record it into the Electribe. You're absolutely right about the overdrive, it really beefs up the synth sounds. Combine that with the many filters available, as well as the analogue-style knobs, and it is capable of some great sonic chaos. Great video!
Thank you for watching! 🙏 Totally agree, it does get overlooked and capable of some really cool stuff. Combining with Keystep sounds a like a great and clever way to get even more out of it since its internal sequencer is not the best to program I would say
@@RandomNoiseMusic You're right about the sequencer, the step edit mode is awkward at best. I highly recommend getting a Keystep, it really pairs well with the E2. The ability to switch midi channels on the fly is great, as you can set up different "patches" on the various parts & jump between them at will. The only complaint is that the E2 doesn't recognize pitch bend, but otherwise the Keystep turns it into a full-on synth. Not bad for a little over $100...
Wow this is exactly what i needed, i just recieved an electribe 2 i ordered and its the first time i ever touch any music making thingy and when i turned it on and press a button it started playing a whole song by itself, scared the shit out of me and i put it back in the box. Really helpful tutorial, only had my electribe for a week and this has really helped me out. Many thanks and I love your style of music you create. Very inspiring. I’ve got a TD3 but I’m liking the sound of the nubass. Not sure if I should get it and sell my TD3 🤔
Thank you so much for the kind words and happy to know these videos are useful and inspiring! 🙏🏻 I only had the Nubass, so I can't say I have actually compared them but I do think they sound quite similar so in terms of sound it may not be such a big difference (I think). But what made me choose the Nubass is the excellent sequencer it has, which I think is probably easier to program than the TD3 which is identical to the TB303
Hi I like your tutorials so much and I have a big problem, if you could please reply to this question ASAP. How to copy parts within the same pattern. For example if I have a part number 4 within the same pattern and I wanna copy it to part number 1,2,or 3, how could I be able to do that. That is one of the biggest lag for this puppy. Thanks in advance
Hey, what do you mean by copy parts, like having one synth or drum sound patch on one of the parts and then copy it to another? you can use the shift+pad 13 for that. If you mean copying the bar to the rest of the bars, there is no direct function for that. What you will have to do for that is first creating your full sequence for all the parts on the first bar (you have to start with 1 bar for this to work), and then when you covered all of them you should extend the pattern to 2, 3 or 4 bars as needed. I hope this answer your questions and helps
I wonder if you have the Sampler version as well and have considered combining the two? The nice thing about the sampler is you can resample internal sounds or sample sounds/loops from the other Electribe to build more layers of composition.
Thanks for watching! No, I do not own the sampler version as well. I decided to pick the synth version eventually because of the extra oscillators and filters, but it is tempting to get the sampler and play the together haha should be fun
hello! to start thank you very much because you help me a lot. I need your help I'm stuck.. I explain my problem.. I practice doing the exact same thing as you in the video with the same Korg. I do this to train and understand electribe in more detail. so I do exactly the same thing as you in the video and arrive at the moment when you pass the "length" from 1 to 4 It happens that everything I have just done does not complete like you... the sequence cuts out every 2 seconds. parcontre the kick that was placed in the sequencer and the other I hope you can help me and understand me because I started with the electribe 2. I am French, I hope you will understand my English :) Ty
Glad you find my videos helpful! You always have to make sure that you start with the first bar (1) and don't change the length to 4 until you finished the basic elements. You also have to make sure that you don't press the next 2,3 & 4and change something there. The Electribe will only copy from 1 to the rest if the rest are empty and you didn't change something there. I hope I am able to explain it clearly here. I sometime forget about that too and have the same problem. It's annoying problem that Korg should have solved with a way to freely copy and past the bars around but unfortunately it doesn't work like that..
@@RandomNoiseMusic Thank you very much for your answer ! You help me a lot :) Yes ducoup it is unfortunately a small problem which quickly becomes embarrassing.. Keep it up you are the best :)
Hi man !! This is simply best tutorial video :) Glad I have my grey edition from preorder :) I still am returning to use theese beasts, youst that sampler (maybe samplers in general) is not my kind of coffee :) But, I canot use them swiftly :) Did you got your hands on Korg Electribe Sampler ? Some cool stuff shouůd be hidden there also... just that sd card limitation is killing me... Thank you for this video :)
Thank you for watching and the kind words! 🙏 I did not get the sampler version, but I did install the Hacktribe firmware which added sampling features to my synth version Electribe 😃
Excellent tuto if you use this machine. Excellent, man!___ but (but...) all of you try to get the sampler version. And in case : the very first esx1. We love korg.
Hi, thanks for this tutorial. It helps me get back to musicproduction after a long break. I have a question. Everything worked as you described until changing the length to 4 bars. It only copies the kick to all bars the rest is only on bar 1 and 3. Any idea how I can fix this? Thx 4 help
Thank for watching and glad to know it inspires you to make music again! First, you got to make sure that you start your pattern on the 1st bar (for some reason Korg made it so that its not defaulted to the first one after initializing a new pattern..) Now before increasing the length, create your full pattern on the 1st bar, and only after you feel like you got the basic structure, increase the length. The way it works it that bars are only copied from the 1st bar onwards after increasing the length of the pattern. Its a clunky workflow that confused the hell out of me too in the beginning, and I don't understand why Korg designed it that way instead of having a simple copy and paste method between the bars.. Hope this helps clarifying!
Hey. I enjoy your videos a lot. Can you explain why if i put in the sequencer the Snare(for Exemplar in pad13) and hihats(pad 14) on the same steps. You can hear just one of the pads.
Pad 13 is usually reserved for the closed hi hat, and pad 14 for the open hi hat. Drum machines have been built in the past in a way that mimic a real drummer. If you think about it, there is only one hi hat in a drum set, and it is either can be closed or opened at one time. In more modern machine like the Electribe, or even vst softwares, you can actually choose to assign 2 or more sounds to the same group so they mute each other. So you can either choose to reserve pad 13 & 14 for the closed and opened hi hats, or you can change the settings for these pads to not mute each other. Search in the menu for ALTERNATE 13 & 14 and turn it off (I think it is page 13 in the pattern menu if I am not wrong). There is also ALTERNATE 15 & 16 option btw.
I love your tutorials so much. I literally use this to help with the sampler version. I have a question, would you happen to know why when I switch patterns on the sampler there is an audible gap?? Do you have any remedies for this?
Hey thanks for watching and really glad to know these are useful! 🙂 About your question, I am assuming it is the same thing that happens with the Synth (blue) version. I am afraid that is how this gear works, each pattern store all the settings and data, so when switching between those patterns, it is almost like it needs a millisecond to reset and load the next ones (like filters, envelopes effects etc'). Another thing is that the envelopes on both of the Electribe are monophonic, and while you can play a few notes together, the notes "cut" each other if they played one after another with a long release (decay mode). My suggestion will be to avoid pads or other long notes parts in between the patterns states, and also trying to keep similar settings between transitions. Once you get used to this idea, you start to think more carefully about how to construct your patterns, so its kind of work, but I do wish Korg had made a much better song mode.. Hope this helps!
@@RandomNoiseMusic Absolutely helps. This answers another question I always had as to why I've never seen videos featuring the performer switching patterns. Wish Korg ironed this out, but oh well, will make do with the tips provided. Thx again!!
Thank you very much for this tutorial, much appreciated! I have been thinking about getting the KE2 and ran into your channel (signed up right away!) while researching. I noticed you have labels on the pads. How do you use these, and, how do you decide which part is assigned to each pad (meaning, do you have a preferred setup/location for the kick, Arp, etc...)? Thanks!
Thanks for watching and glad you find it useful! For your questions, I use the labels to help me remember the shortcuts to some of the menu items you can access by holding shift and one of the pads. You can see all those here, they are very useful and make the workflow much more easy and fast: rotten77.cz/korg-electribe/korg-electribe-shortcuts-color.png As for the decision on how to assign parts to pads, I got used to the default settings of the E2 in which usually the bottom raw is dedicated to drums sounds, while the top one cover all the synths. And I will usually start with the bass being on the first pad in the top raw and continue adding elements as I build the pattern. That way I can easily remember which part is which. Its not a strict rule, and I am more flexible with that sometimes, but I try to keep it consistent. Hope this answer you questions and helpful :) And thanks again for watching and the sub!
@@RandomNoiseMusic Thank you very much for the reply, much appreciated! I have been glued to TH-cam watching many of your videos the past couple of days. Amazing talent!
Hey! Is it possible to use samples loaded from the sd card? Or this feature its only available in the sampler version? Thank you very much for your videos!
Not with the original firmware, the synth version does not support samples. But if you brave to try to install the Hacktribe version it will add those capabilities to the synth version too.
Fantastic tutorial! Thank you so much for posting. I’ve just got an Electribe 2 and am slowly working out what each function does. Please can you tell me what the 3 blank spaces are for in the note mode of the step sequencer? At 3.38 in the video you change the note for one of the pads in the 1st slot on the left but leave the three other slots blank. In what situation would you use these?
Thank you so much! Happy to know it is useful! The blank spaces are basically extra notes you can program to the sequencer to play more than one note at a time, like a chord. So you can use that to program a chord progression for example
@@RandomNoiseMusic Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my question✨🙂✨👍✨ I shall give that a go. Really hope you do more tutorials on the Electribe 2. Korg should give you a job!😁
Really good tutorial mate. I have the sampler but most of this still applies and is really helpful. Cheers! Edit: Does switching to poly1 help with the envelope cutting off problem when making pads? I think I saw something about that in one of Loopop’s vids but probably didn’t understand it properly.
Thank you for watching! the difference between Poly 1 and Poly 2 is that in Poly 1 mode every time you press a key it will reset the envelopes. So for example you set the envelope to control the filter in sort of way, if you hold one key and press another, that envelop will be triggered again. When you switch to Poly 2, when you press one key and then additional one, the envelope will continue without being triggered again. So this is useful in a way, but unfortunately it does not solve the issue of the synth being paraphonic, and notes will continue to cut each other... Hope I've managed to explain it right and this is useful.. 😅 thanks again for watching!
Hi! I have a problem, I would like to copy a single pad sound from a preset to another different one, how can I do it? Cause on the manual is not clear! Thank you so much
I wanted to make my own electribe video similar to this for a long time. I rely on the scale modes cause I don't have a clue about scales. I guess I could make 12 tone music with the chromatic scale.
I like to change it to chromatic because it helps me remember where are the keys in this layout. Im used to the keyboard layout, and the layout on the electribe confuses me sometimes haha
You're welcome! You got to make sure that you create first everything on the first bar before extending it. Only after that you should change the number of bars, and it should copy all to the rest of them
Does anybody know how new models compare to the old ones? In terms of sound, do the old ones sound better, the tubes may be a big factor in the shaping of the unit I imagine?
I've heard and watched many swear by the sound of the MX. I never had one, I had the R MK2 many many years ago, but I do remember the MX when they just came out. Use to play with them in the shop. The tube do make a difference if I remember correctly. The new Electribe sounds a bit more digital I guess. There are more oscillators options with the new ones, but I think the MX did sound slightly better. The filters on the new ones are better though in my opinion.
Hey, thanks for watching! I prefer it like that with my setup - the Electribe is connected to my Focusrite scarllette audio interface through the balanced inputs and the gain seems to work best when the volume is all the way up.
I can't do such thing on the Emx-1. When I use the audio interface of a zoom h5 to record without a daw I need to play it with very low volume. It starts cracking the sound. Maybe new Electribes are different.
@@Henr1x could also be that the zoom has a pre amp on the connection. I never used one (the zoom), but maybe it is possible to disable the pre amp for cases when it is not used with a microphone. I had similar issues when connecting mine to the combo jack on the focusrite
True, hard to maintain and perform live though if you want to modify different parameters like the filter for example. But it could be good for ambient evolving long pads and such 👍

Super helpful. Thank you!!!🤜🤛
Happy to help!
Really appreciate your video. Good stuff.
Thank you for watching, glad it is useful! 😊
Nice one, such a well of good info!
Thank you! 😊
I wonder if you have the Sampler version as well and have considered combining the two? The nice thing about the sampler is you can resample internal sounds or sample sounds/loops from the other Electribe to build more layers of composition.
Thanks for watching! No, I do not own the sampler version as well. I decided to pick the synth version eventually because of the extra oscillators and filters, but it is tempting to get the sampler and play the together haha should be fun
tu enseñanza me ayudó MUCHISIMO.
MUY AGRADECIDO !!!

Great tuto. Thanks a lot
Magnificent tutorial and love the Trancey beat
Thank you! 🙌
Merci beaucoup pour la vidéo 😃

Hi
Great channel
Can you add your own samples into this machine?
Sorry if this has already been answered 🙏🏻
Cheers
Great tutorial thanx
Thank you! Glad to know its helpful :)
hello! to start thank you very much because you help me a lot. I need your help I'm stuck.. I explain my problem..
I practice doing the exact same thing as you in the video with the same Korg. I do this to train and understand electribe in more detail.
so I do exactly the same thing as you in the video and arrive at the moment when you pass the "length" from 1 to 4
It happens that everything I have just done does not complete like you... the sequence cuts out every 2 seconds. parcontre the kick that was placed in the sequencer and the other I hope you can help me and understand me because I started with the electribe 2.
I am French, I hope you will understand my English :)
Ty
You help me a lot :)
Yes ducoup it is unfortunately a small problem which quickly becomes embarrassing..
Keep it up you are the best :)
Great tutorial!
Thanks for watching! 😊
Hi man !!
This is simply best tutorial video :)
Glad I have my grey edition from preorder :)
I still am returning to use theese beasts, youst that sampler (maybe samplers in general) is not my kind of coffee :)
But, I canot use them swiftly :)
Did you got your hands on Korg Electribe Sampler ?
Some cool stuff shouůd be hidden there also... just that sd card limitation is killing me...
Thank you for this video :)
Thank you for watching and the kind words! 🙏 I did not get the sampler version, but I did install the Hacktribe firmware which added sampling features to my synth version Electribe 😃
@@RandomNoiseMusic yeah :-)
I did install it too, some months ago.
Didnt got time to look at it tho...
Excellent tuto if you use this machine. Excellent, man!___ but (but...) all of you try to get the sampler version. And in case : the very first esx1. We love korg.
Thank you! 🙌 the original Tribes are definitely 🔥
Really helpful thank you. I have liked and subscribed 👍👍👍
Thank you!! 🙌 and glad to know it was helpful!
¡Muy buen tutorial, muchas gracias!
Excelente! Gracias por este tutorial que me ayudó mucho
Thank you! Glad to know that! 😊
Hello, great video! What firmware are you using in this video?
Thank you! In this one it was the original firmware from Korg, not the hacktribe
very good!!! clear and on the spot.
Thanks a lot! Glad you think so!
First, you got to make sure that you start your pattern on the 1st bar (for some reason Korg made it so that its not defaulted to the first one after initializing a new pattern..)
Now before increasing the length, create your full pattern on the 1st bar, and only after you feel like you got the basic structure, increase the length.
@@RandomNoiseMusic thx 4 the fast answer. problem solved . u r the best.
Thx again!!
thank you so much
Shift + part mute = unmute all
True, thats a great tip, thanks for pointing it out! They (Korg) could have really done better with their manual to figure out all these features
Shift + < = undo
Thank you very much for this tutorial, much appreciated! I have been thinking about getting the KE2 and ran into your channel (signed up right away!) while researching. I noticed you have labels on the pads. How do you use these, and, how do you decide which part is assigned to each pad (meaning, do you have a preferred setup/location for the kick, Arp, etc...)? Thanks!
Thanks for watching and glad you find it useful!
For your questions, I use the labels to help me remember the shortcuts to some of the menu items you can access by holding shift and one of the pads. You can see all those here, they are very useful and make the workflow much more easy and fast: rotten77.cz/korg-electribe/korg-electribe-shortcuts-color.png
As for the decision on how to assign parts to pads, I got used to the default settings of the E2 in which usually the bottom raw is dedicated to drums sounds, while the top one cover all the synths.
Amazing talent!
when you mentioned length that stuck out because my patterns dont default copy to the 2 to 4 steps
Hey! Is it possible to use samples loaded from the sd card? Or this feature its only available in the sampler version? Thank you very much for your videos!
Not with the original firmware, the synth version does not support samples. But if you brave to try to install the Hacktribe version it will add those capabilities to the synth version too.
@@RandomNoiseMusic thank you so much, definitely will be checking the hacktribe
@@RandomNoiseMusic Ah right! That does make sense yes, cheers!
super helpful ty
Glad to hear! 😊
Brilliant!
Thank you 😊
Good video.

Dziękuję ❤🙏❤️🩹
Thanks!
Is there a quick way out of Solo mode, so you bring all other parts back in that you muted using Solo? Cheers
Im not next to my E2, but if I remember correctly you can do that by pressing shift and the mute button
i've had mine for a few years. it's easier to understand & use compared to other modules, but the samples aren't as good as some others.
Thanks for this video !!!
But please ! someone can tell me how its possible to do that
at 20:19 ??
Its doesnt work with my machine ...
You're welcome! You got to make sure that you create first everything on the first bar before extending it. Only after that you should change the number of bars, and it should copy all to the rest of them
@@RandomNoiseMusic
Thanks !
it didn't work because my pattern was not clean (initialised)
Your videos saved me a lot of time !!!
great video
Thank you! 😊
Hi. Nice video. One question. Why you have volume to max? Cheers
Hey, thanks for watching! I prefer it like that with my setup - the Electribe is connected to my Focusrite scarllette audio interface through the balanced inputs and the gain seems to work best when the volume is all the way up.
Its different from connecting through the headphones. I think that there is more power coming from the headphones jack
@@RandomNoiseMusic indeed I feel something is going wrong with it. Need to check it better.
17:20 and...If we create a new parts with the same sound to create chords of 2 or 3 notes with a longer decay? it would be a trick
True, hard to maintain and perform live though if you want to modify different parameters like the filter for example. But it could be good for ambient evolving long pads and such 👍
@@RandomNoiseMusic ups, certainly, that option has those limitations that you have mentioned! Thanks !
HI! I'm a french guy and I have the ELECTRIBE 2S!!! Is it the same pads for shift mode... can I put the same sticks and at the same name and place? Because I made some lives and what you show us is interresting because I learned lots of things.... So is the the same for red electribe? I'll test that but if you can to tell me! and more if possible:) thanks really! I'll wait for your return. "SPK" aka SaPerLIp@TeK
Hey thanks for watching! Glad it is useful for you! 🙂 I think it should be the same, you can see it in details here: rotten77.cz/korg-electribe/korg-electribe-shortcuts-color.png
Can i connect a monitor on my korh with a monitor speaker or doe k need a stronger
Best to connect to a mixer or some amp
Muito bom obrigado irmão

I so badly want one. But Korg don’t seem to get on well connected to Roland stuff so. Hey ho …
Hello, I would like to ask how you added the filters that are at 8:28 to the sampler, for example the acid filter.
The sampler version does not include these filters, only the synth (blue version). But you can install the "Hacktribe" firmware to get it to work on the sampler as well
@@RandomNoiseMusic thanks😃

hi hat depth
So a ''song'' (pattern) cannot be longer than 64 steps?
Yeah, unfortunately not... Bad decision from Korg. You can chain the patterns for longer steps though its not ideal
