  • In Standard Horology we find the reliable ETA 2892-A2 and Sellita SW300 at work in running our watches. But here’s news: In some you will find a high horology movement that you may have thought was an ETA clone-the Soprod A10. This video digs into the roots of the A10.

    I absolutely love watching your deep informative videos..
    Your knowledge and how easy you communicate it to us is a joy...
    I got hooked in quality watches and watch making about 5 years ago ..
    Saw a documentary about Seiko and how quartz almost destroyed Swiss mechanicals
    I was so fascinated and got so interested in everything I could see and watch ..
    I’m 57 years old and spend so many hours trying to figure out what to buy and not to buy ..
    If I should save up a few thousand on just 1 watch or to spread that amount on 4-5 quality watches ...
    It drives me crazy...
    The best looking dial with a very good movement or a okay dial with a fantastic movement..
    Some have everything that I want but to thick to wear or it doesn’t come with a sapphire crystal..
    Anyway,
    I do appreciate your love and knowledge and a willingness to do what you do...
    God Bless
    Greg

    This is what I don't understand: A lot of effort is made to create a caliber and when perfected, it is massed produced and very watch company can stick any label in the dial and include this caliber in their watch. Where is the individuality? Isn't the brand claiming prestige for a movement they did not create? It's like buying a frozen French croissant at Cosco and relabelling it.

    Hi Bill, I have a Triton Subphotique, which is a remake of a 60's Triton, which is made in small numbers in Switzerland. I believe this also has a Soprod Movement - a modified M100, but I am not sure how this compares to the A10. Not sure if you would see this an an overpriced ETA clone or more high horology.

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No Paul, the A10 and M100 are based on the Seiko 4L (not an ETA.) When Seiko came out with the 4L, it was to be their movement for High Horology , but their line of watches with the 4L didn't do well because Seiko buyers were used to lower prices. So, Seiko went into a deal with Soprod to use it in a movement, and that was the original A10. About the only thing ETA-like about the movement was the size and the position of the parts that would fit into as case made for an ETA. Take care and stay safe, Bill 😷

      Hi Rodrigo, thanks man! Dornbluth has been somewhat of an enigma to me. They emerged out of the former East Germany in the early 90s and were using ETAs and modified ETAs in developing what is their own caliber. With their watches you get some excellent workmanship priced at a fair amount. Check around for some detailed reviews, but my general sense is that they have good quality watches. It's sort of a shame though that the Soprod A10 doesn't have the magic lever... it's so much more efficient than reversing wheels, I don't understand why the Swiss don't use it

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrei, Seiko took out the existing lever that was never 'magic' and put in one that their engineers felt was more efficient. I guess the Swiss and Japanese engineers will have to fight that one out. Take care and be safe, Bill

    • @jach99
      @jach99 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@watchartsci I had the impression that the 4L35 was designed from the start as sort of a movement to be exported to Switzerland from the start... which in my understanding is why it doesn't use the magic lever, unlike even the higher end 8L and 9S movements, as well as the automatic Spring Drive which all use the magic lever. I don't know if there are any problems with the magic lever, but in my experience, my Seiko watches start after just one shake which I find impressive. Correct me if I am wrong though :) Best wishes and stay safe!

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Andrei, I know that they had to change the position of the dial feet locks on the 4L but not very much more. Initially, they had so many aspects that were the same that I've wondered the same thing. If the 4L25 on the SARA pre-dated the deal (or dealings) with Soprod then they may have had two tracks in mind from the start: one for the SARA/Credor and another for selling the movements to a Swiss movement maker that would replace the ETA. Nobody...neither the Swiss nor the Japanese seemed prepared to lay it all out. Take care and be safe, Bill😷

  • @mcstarling07
    @mcstarling07 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    So did the 4L have the same lineage as the 8L? I have an SLA021 with the 8L35 and absolutely love it. It's the newer B version which actually has some decent finishing as well. What are your thoughts on the 8L line of movements?

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey McStarling, most everything Seiko does is from the same set of workshops/ factories; so in that sense, the 4L and 8L could be said to share a lineage. All I have experience with is the 4L based Soprod A10 and my faithful Seiko 5; so any comments on the 8L would be fairly speculative. Take care, Bill
