Always worth listening to the 20C greats in their prime because they were already fairly mature (past prime?) before stereo came along and
most people listen only to the later stereo. Rubinstein, Horowitz, Arrau were in late middle age when stereo started.

As one ages, they come to understand how frail truly is.
This music is a breath of fresh air in our life of less than 100 years in a trasient world of so much hassle and annoyances

Could you please unearth the one recital where he played Prokofiev's 8th sonata?

There is no record of that. Some people thinks like that, but it is a wrong information.
Carnegie Hall recorded that recital, 1945 April 23, under Horowitz’s expense. Like other Yale Collections.
But Horowitz damaged that recording (seems like accident) and would be never release.

@@Vladimir_Horowitz The sonata is about 30 minute long; he would have accidentally have had to destroy 5 or 6 acetate discs accidentally - highly unlikely. Plus, parts of the recital were broadcast (e.g. Brahms waltz), so there is most likely a second source for the rest of the program.

There were no broadcast of that recital as I know. If you have the broadcast of that Brahms Waltz and Sousa Stars Strips Forever, please contact me at email.
