    I have always loved 3D movies too. I have a 3D TV and years ago had a 35mm 3D camera. I was excited when I learned my collection of about 100 blue ray 3D movies could be downloaded and viewed in my 256g Quest2.. So excited in fact I purchased an 8 tb hard drive in anticipation of downloading my entire collection. I have been trying unsuccessfully to download my movies since early December. TH-cam info on this process is limited and somewhat dated. My initial research of this process lead me on a mission to purchase a 3D blue ray player/writer and DVDFAB software. So that I could load the 3D files into the computer on to the external hard drive, then to my Quest2 headset. So far properly setting up the DVDFAB has been a challenge. Hopefully one day I will view my collection of movies in my Quest2. Thanks for the video. You really simplified the process.

      Use a head strap like Bobovr m2 pro and then it sits on your forehead more and you can completely remove the facial interface and it is so much more comfortable as well as more balanced with the magnetic battery pack on the back. Very nice to watch movies, apps like immersed and some games like demeo with no pressure on your face and better battery life. Also Dlna from Plex works well but you may need to change the Plex profile xml for Generic to change audiocodecs and to 2 channel

    On the other hand - It is possible to watch your 3d blu rays on your vr [Oculus quest 2] headset from your blu ray player, and do so in real time without a 3d tv. All you really need is a budget hdmi splitter box which strips the HDCP protection signal from the hdmi signal before sending it to a bog standard hdmi to usb converter dongle. The key step is to set this in the software [vlc] to convert the hdmi at 1080p at 24 fps, eg 1920 x 1080 - this makes dongle appear to be a 3dtv. You then view the converted Topbottom signal on your desktop in vLc. Once you have this in fullscreen mode, use the virtual desktop to convert the TOPBottom into 3d. There is no need to rip, or poorly covert, or store the 20gb - 40 gb files on you VR headset. Just buy your 3d blu ray disc and watch real time in vr at 1080p. Who knows with more people buying 3d blu rays we might turn that industry around.
    That's 3d disc >> 3d player >> hdmi splitter >> hdmi to usb dongle >> to pc software vlc set to convert at 1080p 24fps >> to VR software Virtual desktop, [or Big Screen if you have win 10 to run that] >> VR 3d.
    You can also hack the properties settings in a copy of the Vlc icon so it loads with the 1080p defaults already set for your hdmi / usb dongle. This way its just click and go. see below. Just replace the "USB Video" with your own dongle name, and the same for the (usb Digital Audio)" so it points to the audio for that capture device.
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" dshow:// :dshow-vdev="USB Video" :dshow-adev="Digital Audio Interface (USB Digital Audio)" :dshow-aspect-ratio="16:9" :dshow-size=1920x1080 : :live-caching=300 :dshow-fps=24

      Wow thanks for that detailed guide Chris! I don't personally own a bluray player anymore so I can't test it, but I do have an Xbox One X that has bluray, so it might work on that too, and I just bought an HDCP splitter so I'm definitely trying that!

      Waw, if this works I'm going for it !
      About 20 years ago I ripped/downloaded dvd's and I remember how time consuming it was, especially finding the right .srt's.
      Also : my blu ray player is connected to my surround system....
      On the other side : I'm totally new to VR headsets, so I will browse some more on your channel.
      I also wanted to know if there is a difference in quality when you watch the movie copied to the quest or on remote desktop...

    • @chrisliddiard725
      @chrisliddiard725 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@manuquickie in terms of quality its better than a ripped disc, that's for sure. WYSIWYG. The width remains at 1920, the same as the disc. The height is halved to allow for top and bottom fitting 1080. This is in part due to the limit of the capture card and VLC software. If enough people approach VLC i'm sure they could improve this aspect of the software.
      Oh Virtual desktop has quality settings based on the bandwidth of the connection. My wifi was fast enough not to further impact the quality of the image reaching the occulus.

    • @chrisliddiard725
      @chrisliddiard725 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@manuquickie on most laptops the HDMI is for output to an equvalent monitor. NO, the way you get the signal into your laptop is via the capture card, HDMI to Usb. once you have that incoming signal open VLC, go to the Media tab and select Open capture device. try working with the defaults to see if you have an incoming image, then adjust the paramaters as i've suggested to get the quality where it needs to be for all this to work.

I have a samsung odyssey wmr headset and I was thinking to buy an oculus quest 2 for watching movies without the need to have the pc on!So after watching your video i have some questions! Can you attach a usb device to the headset and read the file from there? Lying down and having the usb attached isn't a big problem! Virtual desktop have an option to play videos but I am not sure if you can do this locally from the headset, have you tried it? And finally oqulus quest 2 can't open files from a USB attached to your wifi router and then play them with big screen or virtual desktop? By the way , the best way to watch a 3d movie with a vr headset connected to your pc is playing the 3d iso file and converted in real time to half sbs with stereoscopic player and then use virtual desktop on your pc with 3d sbs option on of course! Thank you!

      Thanks for watching Gus, appreciate your support! Regarding your questions, the Quest can't (at least yet) read files directly from a USB device connected to it. Bigscreen supports network file sharing, but you have to set it as DLNA for it to work. For Virtual Desktop, the idea of it is to control and view your PC in VR, so you wouldn't actually need to have anything stored on the headset itself, because it acts like a screen essentially, with head motion and the works of course, but still essentially a screen. It doesn't process or store anything locally, everything is streamed from your PC to your Quest through Virtual Desktop over Wi-Fi.

    My problem with Bigscreen is that it does not support ".srt" subtitle files for movies. I suffer from tinnitus and often need subtitles.
    To have subtitles from the ".srt" file showing in my movies, I play my 3D movies on my PC with PotPlayer in side by side mode. From the "3D" Menu I choose "Stereo 3D Subtitle Mode", "Enable : SBS (Side by Side)", or "Enable : TAB (Top and Bottom)" as appropriate. Then use Virtual Desktop to send them to my Quest 2.

      You don’t need any additional glasses, but it won’t turn any movie into a 3D one. The movie needs to have been made for 3D and you’ll need to find the right type of 3D for your movie, like SBS and other types. I do recommend Bigscreen for this rather than the browser.

    • @VRManCave

      Hi Edoardo! Video files require something called codecs to play properly, and while on standard video players on Mac and PC you would pretty much have all the codecs installed and no issues playing the movies, you can sometimes encounter such issues as yours when trying to play those files on other devices/software. Most likely the file you're trying to use has been encoded using an uncommon format that is not supported by Bigscreen. I'd say 99% of movies will have no issues, so I'd suggest either redownloading the movie from a different source if that's how you've obtained it initially, or re-rip the movie if you created the MKV yourself from a Bluray you own. Hope that helps!

      Hey Bob! I'm happy TH-cam decided to put my video in there, thank you so much for watching! Unfortunately as far as I know there aren't any places where you can directly buy digital versions of 3D movies, so you're pretty much left with either buying physical 3D blurays and making your own digital version through a bluray rip, or simply renting them within Bigscreen. Otherwise if you need to be able to watch offline and can’t rip your own blurays, then you’ll need to get creative and find them around the web 😄

    • @VRManCave

      For the Plex method yes, you can use .iso, but you need the file to be in a video format if you want to store it directly on your Quest or Quest 2.

    I like bigscreen. No.1 its a free app. No.2 they offer some small room options. Why would you want to watch a movie in a big empty theatre? (If you do, they offer those options too). No.3 you can play your own locally stored movies (2d or 3d). However, I don't think you can play videos directly off youtube. Has other features like public rooms to share with other people. Ok, did I mention that it's FREE!

    • @VRManCave

      Hi Alex! Sadly, the only way to watch locally owned 3D movies with friends is for them to have the same file on their headset too, at least as far as I'm aware. The easier way would be to just use content from Bigscreen directly, which can be watched with friends by default.

      @VRManCave  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ghassans4157 Yes you definitely need to have the movie on your computer, and you absolutely can stream from Plex to Bigscreen since that's what Plex is for, streaming from your PC to other devices in your house. If you can see the DLNA Plex Server in Bigscreen, you just need to drag the folders into Plex, or select them as being part of the Library and they'll show up in Bigscreen. Is there an option in big screen app to not crop wide videos? I tried to play Prometheus 3D and 1/3 of the screen was cropped from both sides

    • @VRManCave
      @VRManCave  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm, it shouldn't be cropping anything, I've played wide videos and they just show up with black bars on the top and bottom like they would in a normal cinema. You should have an aspect ratio button in Bigscreen, next to the button for selecting which type of 3D encoding it is, so make sure to try and play around with that and see if it fixes your issue.

    • @VRManCave
      @VRManCave  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Ken, unfortunately I don't think that you can use an external player to do this. If you could get the movie on a PC there are some ways to do this, but I haven't yet tested them out yet. Do you have a Blu-ray reader on the PC?

  • @VeganBytes

    My only vr experience with 3d is psvr. I used Avatar 3D bluray disc.
    Compared to using a real TV with glasses, vr it isn't as good. Granted, its a decent option, and adds a little depth to your movie experience, but you'll truly miss the 3d effects that your glasses and TV will offer you.
    An example: Avatar - Sully and Nityri cross a ravine where jellyfish-like creatures surround Jake. In pure 3d form using glasses and a TV, you feel like you could grab them out of the air with your hands. It's astonishing how real and close they are.
    Psvr doesn't give you this effect, not even close 😋

    Is there a way to watch 3D movies if you are using your occulus as standalone?

    • @VRManCave
      @VRManCave  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Sophia! This method works completely stand-alone, but you do need a PC to load these onto the Quest initially. If you are wondering if there is a completely stand-alone method without requiring a PC at all, then the only option is to simply watch the movies directly in Bigscreen, which means either renting them or just watching the free ones that have commercials on them. Hope that helps, but if I didn't answer your question, please let me know and I'll try to clarify. Thanks for watching!
