  • On January 25, 2024, Bari Weiss interviewed Natan Sharansky at the Nalagaat Theatre in Jaffa, Israel.
Natan was born in Ukraine, in 1948, the same year as the birth of the state of Israel. A chess prodigy and a mathematician, he became a figure of international importance in 1977, when he was imprisoned by the Soviet Union on trumped-up charges of treason. His real crime was wanting to immigrate to the state of Israel. At his court hearing in 1978, he famously said, “To the court, I have nothing to say. To my wife and to my people, I say, Next year in Jerusalem.”
Getting to Jerusalem took him longer than a year. Sharansky had to spend nine years in the gulag, often in solitary confinement. In 1983, he was in a tiny cell in a prison near the Siberian border when he learned that President Reagan had labeled the Soviet Union an evil empire. That empire fell eight years later, in no small part thanks to the actions of Sharansky, who immigrated to Israel upon his release from prison in 1986 and reunited with his wife, Avital.
Natan went on to a long political career, serving as a cabinet minister in every Israeli government from 1996 to 2005. He’s the author of several books, including the must-read memoir “Fear No Evil,” and most recently, “Never Alone: Prison, Politics, and My People.” In the course of his remarkable life, Natan has been a key actor in the only true forever war, and that is the war of liberty versus tyranny.
And while many American Jews have had the luxury over the past half-century of feeling as though history had ended, or that they had been on a holiday from it, Sharansky has always lived inside Jewish history. Few people can better illuminate the way, not just for Jews and not just for Israelis, but for anyone who cares about the cause of freedom than Natan Sharansky.

Remarkable interview with a hero of the Jewish people. His memoir Fear No Evil is an inspiring true life story of his moral courage in facing down the Soviet empire and never bending the knee to totalitarianism. Thank you to Bari Weiss and The Free Press for this interview.

I know of sharansky but tried to listen carefully.
I had difficulty comprehending much of his answers but he is above my level in reference to references to Putin, antisemitism in college campuses here, and thoughts about the solution to anything.
Perhaps you could write a long piece explaining His thoughts in the free press or need to listen to this many times. He is a fascinating person with an amazing history.

At 26 minutes he laments the last 2 years of Israel being on Putin's side, I'd call that a mischaracterization of remaining neutral when Russia is looking away when Israel bombs in syria, would have guessed he'd be more upset at the anti netanyahu protests regarding the reigning in the power of the supreme Court, fascinating stuff... Would be curious to hear his version of the discussions between Ariel Sharon and him regarding the disengagement besides that they disagreed

Sharansky - as a cabinet minister - voted for the DISENGAGEMENT FROM GAZA.
Many knew then, that the Disengagement would lead to more terror.
Now we all know that October 7 could not have happened if not for the Disengagement.
Shortly after he voted for it, he quit the cabinet and went around claiming he was against it.
In the intro, it is mentioned he was in the cabinet. It was not mentioned that he was in cabinet as someone from outside the Knesset.
He tried to get elected but the community of Russian activists who had actually suffered in the Gulags exposed him as being KGB.
Needless to say, he was not popular in Israel, but for some reason he has been propped up in the US.
There was a huge rally to show support for Israel following October 7th.
The featured speakers were actually enemies of the Jews. One of them being Sharansky.
The Jewish community leaders in the US are clueless.

I kinda get what he is saying. Putin is surrounded by a lot of Jewish business associates - he understands that Jews are good for business. Close to a million of Soviet Jews moved to Israel in the 90's. Many kept their very Russian/Soviet culture and unlike the people in the former republics of the Soviet Union were actually sympathetic to Russia. The older folks were even nostalgic. So Putin sympathised to that, but at the same time he dreamed of recreating Soviet Union and Israel was always a target because it is an ally of US. Just like his Soviet predecessors, Putin continues to support Israel's enemies.

Baffling how the conversation in Israel completely ignores Palestinian human rights, international rule of law, war crimes, settlements, the general treatment of people in the ocupied territories.. it’s like those issues didn’t even exist! Why didn't Arab Palestinian leaders make Gaza into Singapore with all the billions they received? Imagine what that would have shown the world: “Look what Palestinians can do!” Instead, as soon as Hamas was elected, Hamas terrorists launched rockets at Israel, built tunnels and military bunkers under Gaza, and turned Gaza into a military camp. That is a betrayal of the Palestinian people. By the way, after Egypt captured Gaza and Jordan had the West Bank, from 1948-1967, why didn't they just declare Palestine as an independent nation rather than keeping the territories? Also, no Palestinian leaders criticized them for it, certainly not Arafat. Jordan betrayed the Palestinian Arabs with the help of Pakistan’s Muhammad Zia-Ul-Haq who helped King Hussein massacre 25,000 Palestinians in 1970. Rather than creating a flourishing society, Palestinian people are betrayed by fanatics and corrupt leaders. Israel is a tiny country that just wants to live in peace and that is why they gave the Sinai to Egypt in 1982 and Gaza to the Palestinians in 2005. You know who else is betrayed by the Arab world? The Arab people of Syria and Yemen who are killed by the hundreds of thousands and no peep from Egyptians, Jordanians, and Palestinians.

    • @Celia-qe7cn
      @Celia-qe7cn 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Palestinian human rights are being trampled upon by the leaders they elected-Hamas-NOT ISRAEL. Educate yourself!
There are 2.1 million Arabs in the State of Israel. Muslim Arabs have more rights in Israel than in any other Arab country. Under Israeli law, Arab residents in Israel have the right to apply for Israeli citizenship, they are entitled to municipal services, and Arabs have municipal voting rights. They have representatives in the Israeli Parliament, the Knesset, as evidenced by Muslim Arabs elected to Israeli parliament (Mansour Abbas, Hamas Amar, Youssef Atauna, Yasser Hujirat, Walid al-Huashla, Iman Khatib-Yasin, and more), judges in the Supreme Court of Israel (one of which is Khaled Kabub). Arabic has a special status under Israeli law and it is spoken by Israeli Muslims, Christians and Druze, as well as by Jews who originate from Arab countries. Negev Bedouins, a Muslim minority which includes about 12% of Israeli Arabs, tend to identify more as Israelis than other Arab citizens of Israel. Many Negev Bedouins serve in the Israel Defense Forces. Roughly 5,000 Palestinians living inside Israel currently volunteer to serve in the Israeli military. Israel has broad anti-discrimination laws that prohibit discrimination by both government and non-government entities on the basis of race, religion, and political beliefs, and prohibits incitement to racism. The Israeli government and many groups within Israel have undertaken efforts to combat racism. Israel is a state-party to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, and is a signatory of the Convention against Discrimination in Education.

Palestinians have been attacking Jews when Palestinians also included Jews as recently as the 1920s (Jews were called Palestinians From the time Hadrian in 125AD added Palestina to the the ancient name Israel/Judea .Arabs only first arrive
500 years later in 636 AD)
Israel is simply afraid of the in your face Palestinian violence and the over the top terror attacks .Not a racial thing
Israel has two Arabs on it’s Supreme Court 47% of pharmacists in Israel are Arabs.Israelis would embrace Palestinians but because of Palestinian murderous hatred
one of Israel’s arms are in a defensive posture We look forward to the day when both arms are free to hug Palestinians
Israel made a mistake replacing its historical name Palestine for the name Israel.
By doing so it caused confusion as to which people are the continuous Palestinian people . Though Jews were the first Palestinians the name
signaled that Israel was now under the auspices of the Roman Emperor Hadrian. The name Israel recalls the time before Rome rule.

Sharansky disappointed me....he should talk about Israeli arrogance as a reason for October 7- they were warned but took no action. He lets Bibi off too easy. He brought Smotrich and Ben gvir to power....Also he opposed withdrawal from gaza. Big mistake by Sharansky.

I also supported Rabin's Oslo Agreements and Sharon's disengagement. I still think that these very bold and risky proof-of-concept moves were necessary in spite of their foreseen and actual disastrous outcomes. We owed this to ourselves and we have paid a very steep price for it, but I understand Sharansky's reasons to oppose them. His point was a mathematician's pure rationality, while risk-takers Rabin and Sharon actually gambled on the one-of chance this was the way to achieve our Number One strategic goal, Peace.

Bari Weiss had Refaat Alareer, a Palestinian poet, assassinated by an IDF sniper because of a silly joke she didn't understand. She is genocidal.
