I’m a black woman that listens Beyonce every once in a while. I found u while looking for unbiased reviews. I didn’t know what to expect but WOW you did an amazing job! As a whisky drinker I understood everything you were saying about the lack of complexity & I totally agree about the price point. You make really good reviews and I’ll definitely be back here 🎉
I got an e-mail about this from BevMo not too long ago. Celebrity booze is usually mediocre and overpriced, so I would not ordinarily be interested, but the mashbill and finish caught my attention. Then, I saw that it was low strength and lacked the "straight" designation and an age statement. Though low strength, chill filtered, easy drinking whisky has its place, if I'm going to pay real money for a bottle, I want something that will knock me around a little. "Try it" sounds like an appropriate judgment - it seems just different enough from the norm that curiosity might drive me to try it at a bar; it might make a good warm-up pour if I'm planning to drink some firewater afterwards. I don't see a need to have a bottle unless the price comes down. This isn't the sort of product that is aimed at obsessive whisky drinkers - it is clearly aimed at a more general audience that is drawn to the celebrity connection and luxury presentation. These sorts of products have always had a place in the market.
Bought this for my wife and opening it on her 40th. she doesnt drink whisky but is a massive Beyonce fan. If it gets her into whisky that would be great! Looking forward to it actually. Nice review Bill.

Man, you had me on the nosing notes, I was excited, but I'm glad that I stayed around for the tasting notes because at this point I think it's an ignore it for me. Having a young family, I don't really go to bars (never really did) and at $89.99, you're in real competition now with established whiskeys. Here's the deal though, this was strategically priced at $89.99 so that with tax you keep it right under the $100 price point for Christmas gifts. This was made so that a whiskey drinker would enjoy it, but it will be because their wife got it as a Christmas gift because she's a big Beyonce fan. At least that's my thought behind it, and I've been wrong before.
Be careful. The nose could be coming from artificial flavors and scents. This isn’t straight rye so they are free to add artificial additives without telling you
I was on board with this from your first taste, until I saw the price. Fully agree that people should just go get Wild Turkey Longbranch. I wish it was a bit proofier, but still very good. Cheers!
Hi Bill. Do you have any beginner recommendations for someone who enjoyed SirDavis and wants to try/learn more? I watched your "Beginner Whiskey Choices" video, and I see you have even more beginner guides for the various categories of whiskies, so there is a LOT of information. With this being half-rye, half-barley, and sherry-finished I'm not sure which direction to go in. I enjoyed how easy-to-drink it was while having those interesting aromas. Anything in particular? Thanks
I had a 7 year Rossville Union 51% Rye 49% malted barley cask strength single barrel that I got from Binny's for only $50. It was pretty good, though it didn't taste quite like I expected. I definitely won't buy an overpriced watered down celebrity version of whiskey otherwise from the same source.
I can take an educated guess. Most people aren't huge fans of rye whiskey. It has a very strong flavor. It's why bourbon is so popular, it's a lot more approachable. Then add in malted barley and it's a completely unfamiliar flavor to the casual drinker. That would be my guess
Nice review! Really surprised about Dr Bill being involved! Talking about him and Glenmorangie, are you thinking of reviewing their new Original 12 year old (that will be replacing the 10) ??
Great review. It sounds like they definitely could have aged it for longer in the Sherry casks. For the last month, I've been seeing it sitting on the shelves on base and nobody's buying. It takes more than a pretty bottle, the whiskey's gotta be worth drinking. Cheers 🥃
I believe the 51/49 mash bill appeared in a few Rossville Union bottlings, though I’m not sure if many of them are going around anymore. The 51/45/4 and 95/5 mash bills were more common.
Thank you for the video. I do agree, (IMO) this is another source of income for someone that more likely has no interest in whiskeys, drink whiskey, but they want to charge $90 for a young MGP spirit in a very appealing bottle. Maybe the juice is not bad, but $90 is a lot of money in a market that you can get so much better for a fraction of that.
Agree 100%. Also keep in mind this isn’t classified as a straight rye. That means they are free to add artificial flavors and other crap and not tell you. Also it could be less than 2 years old or even younger
I dont think this is being sold up here in Canada. Thats probably just as well because I would expect it to sell for at least $120CAD and I dont think most Canadians would have any enthusiasm for that.
