the lyrics progress though stages, finger/knuckle/elbow/shoulder deep yes it's literally about "butt exploration" however that's just an intentionally shocking metaphor, because the song is actually about anything that needs to continually ramp-up to achieve the same stimulation (drugs, news, driving fast, relationships... anything). and being intentionally shocking is also self-referential to the song itself, ironically the more times you listen to the song the less it shocks you and the less it means what it says literally. genius poetry though ANALogies
Im kind of sad that most people dont get the message really. On TOOL concerts they forbid filming with securities, allways as last song they played Stinkfist and you are all allowed to film...TOOL making it a satire and still many stand there with their smartphones and dont realise they dont live in the moment.
The stink fisting is a metaphor for the process of becoming desensitized to stimulation and needing more and more and more. It's not sexual at all, but it sure gets your attention lol. This song always makes me think of smart phones or social media...how far ahead of their time was Tool with this song!
"Disillusioned" by A Perfect Circle is where he wrote down all of his disdain for that technological side you're referencing. Smart phones and social media - "Time to put the silicon obsession down."
Yeeea, it's pretty overtly sexual. Go translate the interlude, for instance. That said, that doesn't mean his intention in using that medium was not more allegorical. Also, Cell phones and social media existed back then. It just wasn't anywhere near the same level. I know, because I intentionally resisted them both for a couple of decades. Like Maynard and many others, I saw where it was headed. You probably would have seen it coming too.
@@aylbdrmadison1051 This song came in in 1996...10 years before the Smart Phone and about 8 years before Social Media. The overt sexual nature of the metaphor is completely allegorical and designed to capture your monkey brain...as Maynard likes to do.
It's about being desensitized by our surroundings. It resonates with me as a veteran. I went from fear of nothing to overwhelming anxiety. I actually feel worse when everything seems ok because I'm on edge waiting for what's next. PTSD is a hell of a thing.
There’s always double (or more) meaning with Tool lyrics. Yes it’s sexual, but also about getting what you want, and still needing more (money, fame, pleasure).
Okay I guess that’s one aspect of the lyrics. More broadly though would you not agree that it’s more about overstimulation resulting in depraved behavior and depression? About how the little things in life have no meaning anymore because of how desensitized we’ve become to everything. Think of when you were a kid a simple bug or flower or something could make your whole day now it’s completely meaningless. This is unavoidable to a certain extent but the more overstimulated we become the more we have to reach to feel again. (Like fisting when plain old missionary doesn’t do it for us anymore)
Disposition, Reflection, and Triad, the "Holy Trinity" from Lateralus. Tool at their best on all levels. Disposition is quiet, contemplative, and spiritual. Reflection is dark, brooding, and savage. Triad is raw, abrasive, and aggressive. It's an amazing composition. Thanks for the content, Aileen! Stinkfist plays fast an loose (no pun intended) with the line between symbolic and literal. The way I've always read the message of the song is that the more we indulge, the more numb we become, and the numb we become, the more extreme we become in our pleasure-seeking, hence the profession from finger, knuckle, elbow, should deep inside the borderline. Further still, if we are numb to the things, then our lives become meaningless and empty. The lyric at that climax right before the final verse: "Something kinda sad about / The way that things have come to be / Desensitized to everything / What became of subtlety? / How can this mean anything to me / If I really don't feel anything at all?" Some Tool songs lend themselves to an autobiographical interpretation, but I don't think Stinkfist is one of them. I tend to a more symbolic reading for this one.
This song has a special place in my heart. It was the first Tool I heard when I was 17 in 1996. I still love them nearly 30 years later. You have such a poetic soul, so lovely to watch.❤
SO glad you're back to Tool - love your reactions to them. This song so fantastic - I've been jamming it for decades, and I still feel it 100% every time.
Awesome reaction as usual! I always enjoy your breakdowns. Plus, the look on your face when you realized what the different "borderlines" were. LOL. Sidenote: Maynard has said in interviews that the reasoning for staying in the background of the band is purely based on acoustics and the best position for him to hear his bandmates. He mentions that the band is so loud he can barely hear himself sing, so it made more sense for him to be off to the side.
It's Danny Carey's drum set to be specific. And in my opinion, it has a lot to do with the fact that people are starting to focus on Maynard and the way he dances. So, to focus on him more than the band when the whole concept of tool is that he is one instrument among 4 equal parts. So, if they were going to focus on him, then he was going to stand in the shadows and the other three members have spotlights on them, it worked because anybody that knows Tool knows all 4 members and their names. The other two bands are totally different conversations.
The incredible ability of Maynard's poetry is how he gets to the heart of the matter in an almost narrative reveal at the climactic peak of the song. Yes, the double entendres are brilliant and powerful, and shocking at first listen, amusing thereafter. And there is a period of literal interpretation, which also works for the song. But then he hits you with: "something kind of sad about the way that things have come to be, desensitized to everything, what became of subtlety?" And it all becomes clear. The analogy reveals its true power. "how can this mean anything to me, when I really don't feel anything at all?" Apathy. "But I'll keep digging 'till I feel something." The desperation to escape the numbness of nihilism. The apparent panic and last ditched effort to find something, anything to cling onto. And the hurt that one can naively inflict on others in that selfish attempt to find some feeling outside the nothingness of their own dead soul. For it is the protagonist doing the "digging" to feel something. Do they know how much pain they may be inflicting? No. Because they are numb to everything. The layers upon layers of this man's poetry constantly awe and inspire me, even after 25 years of listening to them. There is always something more to be revealed. ... Oh, and the same goes for the music by the other three geniuses that make up this ridiculous miracle of an artistic collaboration.
Adam Jones does the videos, and I think the few videos done were more to show his talents. Before being Tool guitarist, he had a career making monsters for Hollywood movies. He worked with Spielberg on Jurassic Park, one example. The singing and musicianship are always outstanding from Tool.
Like an Indie horror film indeed, Adam Jones, Tool's guitar player, has a career as well in movie special effects and make up. He creates all those bizarre, creepy creatures. Pushing the boundaries of the comfort zone, going elbow deep into the borderline. "Deep" messages.
Maynard's writing is something else. "Relax, turn around and take my hand." One line you could dwell on for ages. The line "desensitized to everything, what became of subtlety?" Rang true back then but jeez it's even more poingnant today.
I really can't believe we haven't done this yet. Such a classic song. And yes, all Tool videos are kind of like that. almost all (all?) of them were directed by Adam, the guitarist.
Great reaction Aileen! Maynard, rarely, if ever, has 'directly' literal lyrics. Metaphor is used typically. Here, for me, he's equating the sexual act to drug addiction - so many lines can relate to that: "I can help you change tired moments into pleasure, say the word and we'll be well upon our way", "I'm not a burden anyone should bear", "not enough, I need more, nothing seems to satisfy"...it reads like an addicts whole perception of the drug their 'tied' to. I've always loved how cryptic MJK can be! Then there's the music - oh boy, the music!! I was 18 when this came out. Was already a Tool fan from Undertow days, and this had me hooked! Didn't take long before Justin Chancellor became one of my favourite bassists! Cheers!
Hi Aileen 😊 Absolutely brilliant reaction to Tool's Stinkfist😊👍 and completely spot on 😊👍 I have watched all of your Tool reactions. Counting this one you have done 16 reactions... So you know Tool. You've stated that you have reacted to live performances and album covers. As you rightly stated, this is the first reaction to an official video. Each of the 15 reactions that you have done have been spot on as you analyze them to the core. Watching your reactions I could see the growth in you by watching the videos. You have commented numerous times during those reactions how Maynard's growth has helped you. Through Maynard's lyrics you have learned coping skills in your life. In each of the reactions I read the comments and many in the comments have also stated a healing process through listening to Tool. When you react, you pride yourself going in with as little information as possible so it is a unique and truthful reaction. You have long ago stated that it is almost a duty on your part to react to what is presented to you in a honest and forthright manner not only for viewer but also to yourself. Your reactions allow the viewer to be one with you. You use it as a point of discussion to speak from your own experiences out to the viewer. In your opening statement you stated it has been a very very long, criminally long time since you've reacted to Tool to the point of saying you should be put in handcuffs. By the way I love your humor. You praised all the attributes of the band to the point that they send you on a trip, whether that be metaphorical or actual, in an attempt to understand. This is the reason why they presented the video for your enjoyment. On your reaction the video is heavily blocked and you put the disclaimer up about it being copyright protected. I was able to find that video so I was able to watch it and understand it the way you did and again you did a fabulous job. So let's get deeply analytical. As I have watched your reactions, when someone is presenting a music video to you, you are going to pay more attention to the video then you will to the music because you want to understand the message. If you don't understand the lyrics being spoken, you will look them up afterwards to use in your commentary. All this is a way of saying that you become immersed in the presentation that you are given. As I was watching the video, I could see the people trying all sorts of a stimulation. Eating nails to the point where they come out of their body in order to feel something. In other parts of the video they're hooking themselves up to electricity either by wires or plugging their finger into an outlet. Also, the use of light stimulation. (Continue)

It’s about how we as a society are so bombared with quick dopamine fixes through social media, games, drugs, sex, etc. that it gets to the point where people become numb and that nothing is enough to evoke an emotional response. And it’s true, everyone’s addicted to something or multiple things and there’s a point where nothing’s ever enough, hence the metaphor for going to the furthest extremes
Awesome reaction as always! Keep it up! Could you react to "The End Justifies" or "Avenge The Fallen" by HammerFall two of their recent songs for their new 13th album, it's catchy, melodic
I hoped you would get to this sometime as it is one of my favorite Tool songs. Of course art can be interpreted in different ways, but I don't think this one is meant to be taken so literally. Keep the Tool and The Warning videos coming!
This song is about whether people seek pleasure to distract themselves from life or to generate life. Great song choice. Please do 46 &2 by tool, and right in Two by tool
This is one of my mom’s favorite Tool songs so it’s so cute seeing you react to it 😭 There’s always been something so whimsical about these Tool videos that just makes you watch in awe. Easiest click of the day. Tool videos are really weird and often takes away attention from the music and lyrics but I think you hit the nail on this one. More Tool!
Always loved this song 🎵 had no idea Tool did it. Guess I like Tool a lot more then I realized 😳 never really gave Tool a chance. Love this song, love Tool and thank you for reintroducing me to Tool. I get it now. Thank you!!!
I must say that this song is really beautiful, and how the song manages to get into your mind in the spirit, reminds us that life has to be explored, that all emotions have to be part of it, life is also a challenge, every day we find ourselves in situations or contexts that make us reflect, and we always have the possibility to react, dear Aileen your analyses are always significant and exciting you not only manage to listen to them you manage to get into the meaning you are really very good with a great heart continues so, and don’t worry if you block the video during reactions is always nice to hear but above all very informative continues so Aileen ❤🫶
To me, it’s about overindulgence for anything pleasurable, whether it’s drugs, alcohol, sex, etc. And if one goes too far with any vice, they become numb to the thing they once loved. Just discovered your channel. Instantly a big fan.
Hi Aileen 😊Tool is back on your channel 😊 I will enjoy the reaction on mute here in the work breakroom and read the transcript and lyrics while watching your expression, hear the audio when I get home 😊 I have watched all of your Tool reactions and this is where your start being very analytical 😊👍 Looking forward to your cosplay on Twitch in a few hours 😊 Have a great day you and Arya with much love 😊👍💪❤️
Of all the band's that you can never be too analytical about, TOOL is at the top of that list. This was the first single off this album and the first song of theirs I remember hearing. I was hooked immediately. The layers of atmosphere and intrigue that it has really drew me in, while the music itself just blew me away. I know it's not their best song or the most popular, but it will probably always be my favorite.
I used to dj at a metal club and when i first played this people hated it, a few weeks later they had picked up on the "show me that you love me" and "we belong together" lyrics and they decided it was a love song, watching couples slow dance together to this song was always makes me laugh

“Open to interpretation” the essence of great art.

Could you react to "The End Justifies" or "Avenge The Fallen" by HammerFall two of their recent songs for their new 13th album, it's catchy, melodic
He doesn’t have stage freight. He only hangs on the side with tool for better communication and acoustics. In his other bands he’s out front mostly.
Nice reaction. Tool is a very important band.
Aileen……………..stinkfist is a masterpiece! Video and song.
Aileen's facial expressions were priceless. This song and video aren't for everybody, but it's one of my favorites from Tool.🤘
This song was written before the internet 😊
I absolutely love your tool reactions ! Thanks for another great video!
I've always been wanting an interviewer to ask Maynard if he's ever been shoulder deep inside the borderline.
That's when you spiral out.
Best Tool song reaction on TH-cam, especially when you had the realization about the lyrics, and what they really mean. You rock, Aileen!
@4:50 When the realization sinks in. From "Yeah" to "WTF" in 15 seconds.
Exceptional first analysis. :)
TOOL has helped me through my PTSD journey!
Imagine an edible and a tool video marathon?? 🙂↕️Again loving this side parting hair thing you’ve had going on lately ❤️
Very good thought process when analyzing this song!
Love this song by Tool and also think that Aileen is very beautiful on TH-cam 🥰😘❤️😍
also eulogy is a great one.
Tool- Pushit live Salival version
I would love to see you react to more tool. There are a lot of great songs that I think you'll enjoy. Eulogy, flood, bottom, reflection, third eye, That's just the name a few
I would love to see you do Parabola next. Probably my favourite Tool song.
Glad you asked, always wanted to see what u thought of the song Merkaba by tool. But also, there's a band called blueskyblackdeath "so dark" I think you'd really enjoy. Peace
i saw tool years ago. maynard stood at the rear left of the stage facing the back curtain for the whole show.
Good song for analyze
Easiest click of the day. Tool videos are really weird and often takes away attention from the music and lyrics but I think you hit the nail on this one. More Tool!
Always loved this song 🎵 had no idea Tool did it. Guess I like Tool a lot more then I realized 😳 never really gave Tool a chance. Love this song, love Tool and thank you for reintroducing me to Tool. I get it now. Thank you!!!
Went to a show and he did the entire set with his back to the audience
More Tool please. And it gets better and better.
I think you nailed the metaphor. Maynard is a genius. Remember this song is almost 30 years old and more apt today than ever.
Ticks & Leeches is a must. Some of the best drummin ever.
TOOL. That’s all that needs to be said. Enjoy.
A total mind F--
To me, it’s about overindulgence for anything pleasurable, whether it’s drugs, alcohol, sex, etc.
Yes, all TOOL videos are of this nature. :)))
@aileensenpai Right in Two!!
These days maynard does sit the back. He doesn't want to overshadow the music. I've seen them twice since 2019, it was great.
When you GET the meaning of the song yeh...!
I used to dj at a metal club and when i first played this people hated it, a few weeks later they had picked up on the "show me that you love me" and "we belong together" lyrics and they decided it was a love song, watching couples slow dance together to this song was always makes me laugh
California ed ❤ I think the song express the difference in feeling in love 😢 sometimes people have different experiences in romance 😮 but if they want it to work it will be more than just a moment ❤
tool video's are something special, from beginning to now.
If you loved the horror element of the vid watch the "pan's labrynth" version of "46 & 2"... it's almost as if the movie was made for the song
Your face when watching the video is just as great as the band itself.
LOVE the look on your face watching this! ✌️❤️🔥🤘
fun to watch new reactionists figure things out! Lol
Please check out Right in Two!!! Unbelievable lyrics! Will definitely move you emotionally!
Well analyzed & awesome reaction as always. & yes, you are right as to the adult meaning as well as the idea of the world being overstimulating and numbing. I also have to admit that the "a lot to take in" comment had me laughing lol. Thanks for the reaction! I always look forward to when you do Tool.
This was every 5th song on FM99 in Norfolk, VA back in the day.
"Take my hand" redefined
Yes, you should be in handcuffs right now!
